Alpha Legion, armour marks.

Hi all, I'm in the planning stages of building some Alpha Legion to both add to my existing chaos force and have as a stand alone chaos/loyalist marine force. What I am curious about is what armour marks people think would be most representative of the legion. My current thoughts are that Mark 4 armour would be most prevalent as the legion was formed late in the Heresy. I imagine some others might be present too particularly if they have been scavenged from other legions during the Heresy.

Mark 4 definitely the most predominant, i would say some mk 5 armour as well, depending on when in the timeline your force is set. There would probably be the odd set of earlier armour too i guess, alpha legion dont really care as long as it works to be honest...

when it comes to alpha legion, i believe you could reliably roll out anything under a mk8 with little to no problem.

i believe that due to their insanely sneaky nature, sheer bravado and intricate planning process, they could find and steal near anything they need/currently want.

I'm pretty sure anything goes (and will be applying that principle this week with my own AL force) but looking at what art is out there, we have Mk4 on 'Legion' which looks pretty god (and is the image I'll be basing my force on) and we also have Mk 5 in several pieces of art in 'Collected Visions'

Ultramarines Quartermaster: "Lord Macragge we seem to have misplaced a thousand suits of Power Armor..."

Guilliman: "ALPHARIUS!" *Picks up the phone*

Ingo Pech: "I am Alpharius."

Guilliman: "Damn it Pech give him the phone."

Ingo Pech: "This is Alpharius though!"

Guilliman: "No it's not, put him on the phone."

Omegon: "I am Alpharius."

Guilliman: "I'm missing a lot of these MKIVs I'm supposed to have. Know anything about that."

Omegon: "Hold on I'll get Alpharius."

Guilliman: "I thought you were Alpharius?"

Omegon: "I'm his secretary."

Guilliman: "Tell him to get an answering machine and return the armor and I'll never bother him again."

Alpharius: "This is me."

Guilliman: "**** Off!"

Quoted for awesomeness.

Alpha probably deserves Mk. 4 probably, with a few 3's and 5's in there as well.

I got talked into doing an Alpha Legion army for ASTRO-WINNIPEG 2012.

Prime: black

Base coat :75/25 regal blue, liche purple ( which give you a rich blue purple)

1st highlite :base coat with a small amount of ultramarine blue to change the hue.

2nd highlite: 1st and then adding more ultra to the mix ( something like base coat 50/ ultra 50)

3rd higtlite: 2nd with a tiny bit of fortess grey to change the hue again. (add a little at a time, your dont want it to be to bright at this point)

4th highlite 3rd add a bit more fortess grey ( then only on the corners and highest raised areas)

You can glaze it if you need to soften the hightlites with your base coat. I will try to take some pic for you this weekend.

If you're planning a Heresy-era force (which I guess you might since you've posted this in the HH forum), MK. IV seems about right, possibly some MK. III's for veterans though I guess the sneaky Alpha Legion would swap those clunky, noisy things for the smooth MK. IV's as soon as possible.

If you're planning a post-Heresy force, I'd say any marks between VI and the new VIII. Being such sneaky gits, the Alphas could well reason that the newer marks are more efficient than the older ones and in any case are more readily identifiable as Space Marine armor (better for infiltration purposes when posing as loyalists), so they might equip their Legionnaires in Mk. VI-VIII exclusively.

Painting the Alpha Legion properly is hard.

Well, Pre-Heresy it was simple. Just Indigo, Mithril Silver, and Scorpion Green.

"Modern" Alpha Legion colors tho.... I still have no idea how you'd paint that. The ONLY place I've ever seen it done right is Warhammer 40,000:Space Marine, where they were finally able to pull off their dual-hue Blue/Green. It looks very much pure blue in the shadows, but it looks outright green in direct light. Sort of an iridescent deal.

I think this color would be sort of simple to do on full-size Power Armor, because it would be a lot like painting a car with that crazy dual-color paint, but on a 1 inch tall miniature.....

Usually, GW paints their Alpha Legionnaires blue and then highlights in green, or blue and then paint sections of scales over it in green, or drybrush green over blue to sort of get the whole two separate colors occupying the same space thing going.
