Pre-Heresy Custodes

Ok, after a bit of a break, my muse has returned and I'm back to working on my Custodes.

Q: I know the general assumption is that for PH/H times, the stormbolter wasn't around. Is that correct?

Q: If the above is correct, since I am using GK rules for my Custodes, would the SB still be off limits for Crusade Era/Pre-Heresy times, knowing that the Custodes would get the very best? Was the SB just not invented yet or was it "lost" and then found again after the Heresy?

Thanx in advance!

Cheers,

Most artistic interpretations render guardian spears (and the rarer guardian gladius) with a small, single barrel bolter. Going by the pictures from Collected Visions, their 'Terminators' do sometimes use storm-bolters equivalents in certain setups, though the second barrel is above the first, rather than to the side of it.
Another possibility would be to create especially ornate bolters at the end of the halbreds, and use the idea that the bolters fire at double the rate, fufilling the 'storm' aspect of the bolter. I mean, if the BA's can get away with wrist mounted bolters that use different rules for their Sanguiniary Guard, then the Emperor's Own shold be able to sneak that one in too, lol.

Originally it was a case of the storm bolter being a post heresy creation, this was to separate the weapons of the Imperium from those of the traitors initially and became part of the original lore of the Heresy along with assault cannons only being mounted on dreadnoughts and terminators using the very cool reaper cannons.

It seems that with the new novels this has been dropped as I think that it was Fulgrim that first had terminators armed with storm bolters towards the end of the Great Crusade.

Given that Custodes are the elite body guard of the Emperor himself it would make sense that they get the really cool toys before others do so you could use them as regular storm bolters or prototype stormbolters.

For the rule of cool though I'd use a couple of Phobos pattern bolters strapped together but still use the storm bolter rules.

Horus had a Stormbolter in the very first HH book, on one of the first few pages even if i remember correctly. They don't exactly beat around the bush with that retcon, i tend to close my eyes whenever i read it and say aloud "COMBIBOLTERCOMBIBOLTERCOMBIBOLTER!". Although i have to say this is probably one of the more insignificant retcons, in a franchise that practically contradicts itself with every new published book.

Horus having a Stormbolter isn't entirely a Retcon as, if i recall correctly, the description of the Talon of Horus gave it a built in stormbolter prototype since 3rd, if not 2nd, edition.
