Space Marine = Disappointment.

I've got to say i'm loving this game both on campaign and MP, sure there are only a few maps but it's nice to finally have a good 40K shooter where you can play as a space Marine. I feel the campaign will be good though i'm still waiting for the Chaos marines to poke their heads out and Titus to be thoroughly shocked and as for the MP i think Tactical marines have the potential to dominate as it's so easy to run around with the perk that show's you the enemies stats and pick them off... and of course the fact that tactical marines are supposed to be the most diverse.

I must admit I'm really enjoying it as well. The single player game is really good but gets a bit repetitive until the second half of the game kicks in.

Multi-player is great fun though, but I do agree it needs more maps and modes. I expect a map pack will pop up at some point and in the meantime there is the new hordes mode coming next month.

I had hoped for more in multiplayer. The unlocks are much too easy IMO. It's day 2 and Im fighting lvl 38 Marines. Pretty insane.

As stated, more maps and more scenario types. Even 2 more would have been nice (Jungle/Death world? And Hulk with doors that open and close for instance. Hulk capture the flag style with your enemy trying to board and defenders fending off)

The single is fun.

Was it worth the $49.99? I think it's a bit overpriced, but if you are a fan of Space Marines, its worth the extra cash.

.

100% agreement.

Additionally I have found a bunch of problems on host migration (XBOX lock ups) and when editing your character when a game starts (and potentially a hack). If you are changing armor when a game starts, sometimes that armor won't show up (no skin) in the game. Can you say "invisible" marine. Have recreated twice (not trying to cheat, just trying to recreate). Bad on a closed system like the xbox.

Additionally if you play a game mode, then choose the other game mode, it doesn't seem to work. i.e. play ground control, then annihilation, still ground control. And, well, 10 tries and only 1 valid group of players. i.e. join a game, bad group, leave, and try to find another game, same group. 9 more times.

Also the "balancing" is not real. Been level 23, 14, 1 vs 36, 36, 34 (This was at the start, not added in later, so this was the "balance" the game chose. Assuming random teams each time, not balancing by war gear). And gear matters, so 3 36s vs 3 14s means 36 will probably win. 1000 to 10.

Good things:

Chaos Space Marines, in particular Emperor's Children. Yeah, got the best buy pre-order.

Well the balance, they are the same on both sides just different names.

Quick unlocks (I like all the armor, it is just decorative, most other games unlock the weapons).

I just beat the campaign tonight. I enjoyed it for the most part, it felt very much like 40k should, and there were a number of areas that had that ridiculously huge 40k scale to them. The story was okay, if a bit predictable. There was only one really "I don't think Blood Angels and Necrons would make out in the back of a Thunderhawk" kind of fluff-unfriendly moment for me, and your mileage may vary on that one but I won't talk about it here since it's a spoiler. My two biggest gripes with the campaign were it was pretty short, and that final boss. All I could think of at that final boss was...what the hell?

I'm just starting to give multiplayer a try, I usually beat the campaign mode on these games first.

Am I the only one who was massively massively dissapointed by this game

Having seen some of the videoes released shortly before the demo come out I wasn't too enthusiastic anymore, but then after playing the demo, it felt terrible

definition of the term button basher, one button to swing the chainsword in 3 or 4 varying strokes, and one for a kill move, that was seriously what melee consisted of? So disappointing

I must admit I did not play the full game solely off the saddening and repetative experience that was the demo, so maybe I am missing something that makes it more fun to play? I had a cursory glance at some of the threads here and the Clan / Multiplayer seems quite fun

But the combat system just feels awful

Is it only me who's thought this?

I loved the old LOTR games on ps2 where you would have a different button for fast slashes, powerful, and medium, and the ability to parry (which would then set up a kill move if you were quick enough)

Why can't this be done here?

Is it just me who has been left whining like a child over their dissapointment at this game?

Please someone enlighten me and tell me I'm thick and I've been doing something wrong or the demo was half finished, please

No you're quite right, it is a simple Hack&Slay Game without any playdepth and a short learning phase.

But because it is so simple, it's much fun to play, has less frustratung moments and there's always the bonus of the only good looking 40K game atm.

I enjoy it much, because I don't have to learn all the strikes and parries and the tit-tat, just happily slashing/boltering away and experiencing the story. The mulitplayer is, because of the simplicistiv combat system, good balanced and very funny too :)

No, actually, had you looked a few threads down there is a topic on this already.

Im combining this thread with the other Space Marine disappointment threads. Lets keep them down to a minimum and work within the one thread.

I beat the single player campaign on the PC and enjoy the multiplayer - just hit level 21 - however I'm a little bit disappointed.

What I want is an epic 200+ hour 40k RPG. Something where you start off as a conscript in the Imperial Guard, do a whole bunch of epic stuff and end up getting recruited to the Space Marines, and a whole thing about the training and mutation to a Space Marine, then a rise through the Marine ranks as you crush the xenos and foul daemons. Something with a deep and intense story rather than a linear shoot-em-up. If you could take the shell of this game and create something like what I said above, I'd be thrilled. As it is, this game is a cheap quick thrill.

Space Marines don't recruit from the IG. The people they recruit are typically very young, around 16-18 years old. Also most recruitments come feral worlds where boys are trained from a young age to be warriors and as such make good space marines. They also will sometimes recruit from Hive worlds as the gangs on the lower levels produce fierce, aggressive prospects.

I don't understand how you could have been disappointed by this not being an RPG. Surely you knew when buying it that it was a Third person shooter with melee? The game was never advertised as anything but what it is. So I'm confused as to how you could possibly complain about that.

Please understand, I'm not saying I THOUGHT it was going to be that. I'm fine with my purchase. I knew what I was getting. I'm just saying what I would want out of a 40k game.

Also, I know you're right about the IG, though I was considering it from a video game development perspective. Perhaps the idea is too far outside the lines of whats right in the 40k universe to be a good one. I was just trying to reflect on ways that sort of experience could be created.

Don't worry I've imagined the game I want in my head many times, and you start off as a scout ;)

I don't know if I want to play for years until I'm allowed to serve as a Devastator for a while. :)

I love it when people button mash at me. They land, start swinging. I dart to the side with my jump pack and fill their face with plasma. Still standing are they? They mash some more, I dart again, pewpew, dead rookie. Rinse, repeat.

People expect you to jump in the air and then ground-pound as an assault marine because you do damage on the pound and like everybody with a jump pack has the MY JUMP PACK CAN HAS BOOMLOL perk. I seem to be the only one who watches them go up, then jumps myself just before their peak, then while they're momentarily stuck on the ground after the pound I pump plasma into their noggins on my slow decent.

I carry a hammer for those times I come up behind an unsuspecting devastator.

I dream about a 40k game with a playstyle similar to Deus Ex, where you're an Inquisitor with a mission and vast options available in how you go about it. Spend character points to be super sneaky, or load up in power armor and go in guns blazing, or take psychic abilities. And every objective has multiple paths, and options to do things in a Puritan or Renegade fashion.

Ah, a man can dream.

That's fine, but you made it sound as if you were disappointed in Space Marine because it's not an epic RPG.

Which is your prerogative, but <_< it's a bit like being disappointed in baseball because it's not basketball. <3

My opinion; Hack and slash 40k game with some nice graphics, proper 40k feel and scale. and how can bludgeoning your way through aliens when playing as a post human super hero not be a great distraction for a few hours.

Thoroughly enjoying playing it.

I loved the graphics and simply because you got to play a space marine. I think with refinement and personalisation options on every level (like bolter upgrades, sword, armour character looks etc) it would take it to the next level.

But online its more like a giant moshpit with bolters that a tactical game, I know the idea is to show how a space marine is walking cover rather than needing to use cover but realistically its always a good idea to find hard cover when devestators, las cannons, heavy bolters and generic storm bolters with plasma guns are being directed at you.

I liked it a lot. I had tons of fun with it, and I loved the single player. There weren't any huge fluff killing moments like DoW II Retribution's Khornate Librarian either. I also don't get what people are saying about the final boss, the daemon prince. What part didn't you like? I'm going to assume it was the falling battle part with the plasma and fist swing dodging? That may have caught you off guard since a fight with those mechanics hadn't appeared in the game until that part, but personally it was refreshing, as it reminded me of the boss fights in Resident Evil 4. Since I had already seen that game mechanic before in vidya games, I was able to beat it on my first try, so it wasn't too hard. In fact, it was much easier than it would be if they had forced us to fight him on foot like normal.

Then you'll have to wait until '013 when the 40K MMO comes out. -_-

It was lame, that's what was wrong with it. After all that face smashing, they have a quicktime battle? I was expecting it to be hard and also to go toe to toe with a thunder hammer in hand. That would have been cool. Instead we played simon says. If they at least let me fight him with a hammer for a bit first and then did the quicktime it would have been fine. It certainly looked epic, but definitely didn't feel that way.

I'm on the last boss fight now and haven't gotten through the minion waves yet. Hard mode is pretty unforgiving, yo.

Also, I've flat out refused to put down the Thunder Hammer since I picked it up, so I've been restricted to the humble boltgun and plasma pistol for quite some time now.
