The Retaking of the Contaqual Sub-Sector (Circa 812.M41)

'The Iron Hands have long been renowned and feared as a wrathful and merciless Chapter. Many would-be heretics and Traitors have thrown down their arms and renewed their faith in the Emperor rather than face the fury of the Iron Hands. The retaking of the Contqual Sub-sector was a sterling example of the consequences of inciting the retribution of the Sons of Medusa as they concluded the campaign with a swiftness and fury that has long been a hallmark of the Iron Hands. As far as Imperial scholars can determine, the taint of the Contqual Sub-sector began late in the year 812.M41 when the Contqual High Governor fell easy prey to the corruption of the Chaos God of Pleasure, Slaanesh. From the High Governor's court the taint spread quickly and within a single month the entire Sub-sector seethed with the corruption of Chaos. The cleansing of Contqual was tasked to the Iron Hands, who have always burned with hatred for Chaos in all its myriad forms since the disaster on Istvaan V.'

So... how do...

Unfortunately i'm not as heartless and ruthless as the Iron Hands themselves, so i'll try my best to insert a bit of humour into the blog as it goes along. Hopefully some folks might enjoy it and at that point i'm a happy man.

Who am I? Why the Iron Hands?

Well, my names Chris, I've been collecting since I was ten, so currently just shy of 19 years service to the hobby. Over the last year or so I've kinda dropped out of love with it and sold off various armies of mine. However despite various tours of service on Ebay and here, the Iron Hands never got sold, taking this as a sign from the Emperor I've decided I'll giving wargaming another try after a summer of LRP instead of painting toy soldiers.

Painted wise already I've amassed around 2500 points worth, give or take, and have easily that amount again unpainted, as well as a ton of stuff that can be stripped to add to the force.

So that's the plan, update and improve the speed painted Iron Hands that have already been to war many, many times, then start bulking the force out further into a full clan company complete with tanks and support.

I decided to set the force amongst the years of the Contaqual Scouring, mainly because its one of the iconic Iron Hands stories, and everyone loves a bit of merciless killing of the population (in a 40k sense)

One other thing to bare in mind, since I'm miles away from the closest GW, this is more a painting project without rhyme or reason, rather than focusing on whats good for gaming. Since I haven't played in over a year now, i'll try take my time and enjoy the story, rather than rush it for the battlefield like in the Staffer days.

So enough waffle, couple of pics of the force as it stands for now to whet the appetite and then I'll plod on from there.

Those pics are awful mind, 'better' ones are below.

So having had a day of tidying and digging out of stuff, I managed to snap a couple of new pics, as well as dig out plenty of reinforcements to join the Contaqual

Not shown are the two Land Raider Crusaders and the Prometheus, but two squads of the mysterious Sons of Medusa Terminators have been added, for some unknown reason *mainly from finding them nearly completed, and the green paint being a bugger to strip...*

I also unhauled a 10 man Sternguard squad, two 10 man tactical squads in partial mk4 armour Terminator Chaplain and Librarian, some metal bolter scouts, 9 man Vanguard squad and a jump pack armed Chaplain. A serious reinforcement wave of stuff, that should easily tip 4/4.5k for the army by now.

Force wise, the Iron Hands are looking along the lines of

Force Commander

Terminator Librarian

Terminator Chaplain

Chaplain

9 Man Vanguard Squad

10 Man Sternguard Squad

5x 10 Man Tactical Squads

10 Man Devastator Squad

10 Man Assault Squad

5 Man Assault Terminator Squad

2 Support Dreadnaughts

2 Vindicators

Land Raider Prometheus Command Tank

2 Land Raider Crusaders

5 Man Legion of the Damned Squad

5 Man Bolter Scout Squad

2 5 Man Son of Medusa Terminator Squads

and still plenty more on Sprues, once I get more Iron Hand Shoulder Pads.

Anyway, couple of pics, and then its back to painting...

Very nice Iron Hands, I especially like the intimidating aura the commander/MotF has. I have a question though, why are there Sons of Medusa terminators in your force? If I remember correctly, the Sons of Medusa werent present at the purging of Contaqual.

Cheers folks

@basswave - artistic license/part exchange/bring a child to work day? Delete as appropriate.

Tbh, both squads and the now stripped termie librarian turned up whilst i was rooting for reinforcements, survivors of a previous project long since resigned to history. Officially your right, there were no recorded sons on medusa present in that campaign, but a bit of colour in an essentially black army always catches the eye. With the Sons having a bit more 'bite' to them background wise following IA10, I decided to lump them in with their gene-fathers, as the tamiya spray used as the green basis for them is an absolute daemon to remove from plastic models.

Update

So having said I havent played a game in nearly a year and with nought else todo today, im sat on a train to my 'local' GW in a different country. Time to seeif the lay off has affected their aim. Battle reportsand pics to come later

I can relate to you on a number of points bud.

I have fallen in and out of love with the hobby a number of times, sold or gave away much.

My local GW is 30 miles away (not quite another country. Sometimes feels like it, lol.)

And I was about to throw in the towel when GW annonced the release of the current BA stuff. BA where my first and longest love in the hobby, so I took that as a sign too.

Anywho. You didn't need to know all that really.

I just wish you all the best with your project and look forward to seeing your progress. And more pics please

How do,

So, two games played, two victories for the honored Iron Hands. Unfortunately I didn't get many pictures, the first army I played, a mishmash of regular marines and Blood Angel 'renegades' wasn't a proper list, but I let the guy use it, happy to put the traitorous marines down with blade and bolt.

The second game was against a very nice Imperial guard army, a close run thing ending with a 1-0 objective victory. I got some lame shots of the game, which doesnt really do either army much justice.

However, try as I might, I couldnt resist buying something for the first time, and the Clan is now the proud owner of its first Stormraven Gunship. Soon to be rechristened a 'Medusa' Gunship akin to the Tempus Fugatives creation. Some kind of conversion work will happen over the near future to it, just need some extra pieces :)

Best go put stuff together then...

How do,

righty, so back from my holiday/lasses cousin's wedding, had a couple of days plowing through Space Marine, so now I'm all enthused to do some more painting of bits (and the inevitable urge to paint some new marine chapters, since I've been running round as a Scythe of the Emperor)

Luckily it coincided with my CHS storm raven kit which arrive this morning, and after an hour of cleaning up, gluing and elastic-banding *you understood it, that makes it a word*...

... I tore the kit off and threw it in a box... Not impressed, not got the patience to faff with it, so have built the Medusa as a regular Stormraven in stead, minus the turret for now.

I have however managed to start painting the SR, in pieces which is novel for me, since normally i'd glue the whole thing together and paint it as one piece. I've even gone far enough to paint the insides before I glue it together and paint the exterior. Something definitely wrong with me :)

So, enough waffle, couple of pics before I continue painting away this evening.

More pics later with a bit of luck
