How to get regular shoulderpads on terminator arms?

I am using terminator claws, hammers and shields for my vanguards. Without shoulderpads they look kind of weird, the terminator ones are too big..

I am cutting around on the joints and the pads until it nearly fits, but on some parts you can see that it was never meant to fix.

 

Has anyone tips for a modeling noob?

here's some pics of how I molded termy arms to my PA marines. Albeit they're Heavy flamers rather than lightning claws, the principle remains the same.
