@ Ian sturrock: Awesome man. I studied the songs of innocence and expererience at uni and i've used Blake's use of Lucifer heavily in my blood angel army. Do you happen to know what that plate I used for the banner is referring too? I've probably mangled the meaning completely.

@ Brother Korvash: Hey thanks man. I'm sure that similar thoughts run through all our heads when we are inspired to do a project. I make sure I write all that stuff down in a stream of consciousness and edit it upon reflection. It's fun for me to delve into the inspiration behind the imagery Games Workshop has worked up for its worlds and try and use it in a different way.

@ Korvash & Vagabond: firstly vagabond, thank you for the compliment. I do agree that my step up is the weakest option I could have chosen. I don't get the chance to play that often so I don't plan my conversions with the rules in mind (unless I'm going to sell it). When I do game I usually do so in a very, very relaxed environment; so I can get away with declaring what equipment he has at the start of the game and use a 'counts as' (Belial is using his sword with a double handed grip so it counts as a thunder hammer etc.).

I've also chosen to arm him with a sword because I think he'll change in the next edition. I've collected for a while now, and i've found that unit options & equipment goes out of fashion so quickly (I remember when plasma was the must have weapon). So, I always model based on my own aesthetic preference, independent of current trends.

@ EPK: Cheers man

@ Brother Immolator : Thank you very much.

@ Kebabyuchenko; Go for it man, give your models an update. Kisses back to you xxx

@ brennus : Thank you

@ dark.wizzard: Thank you Dark wizard.

Looking great, but I am interested in how you made the CML? It's obviously not standard issue, and I need about six more for my DW.

Those look like the missile pods from a tau crisis suit or a tau broadside. I'd link the image, but that would be heretical!

@ pueriexdeus: They were made out of necessity. I had lost the front plates of both my heavily scarred missile launchers.

@ Brother Kovash: They are indeed tau missile pods, rededicated to the toil of Him on earth. Just don't tell the tech priest.

@ Mr.Malevolent: Thats awesome. I'm really glad i've inspired a few people to dog out thier old models and give them new life. I started this project with a bit of a F*** you attitude because I couldn't sell the army. I'm so glad I kept a hold of them and do them up. They have turned out to be one of my favourite & most popular projects.

Plus if your looking for an old assault squad I have one going spare. PM me for details (enough trying to sell my crap).

Thank you to everyone who has looked in, commentated and enjoyed the blog (and even to those who've flicked through without a second thought). I'll be updating it all week with finished images of the squads. You've made me feel really welcome here.

I don't think you've mangled the meaning of the Blake plate too much at all. ;) As far as I can figure out, the figure you borrowed the pose from is Vala, who is a bit like Blake's version of Eve -- she's filled with remorse for her past misdeeds, but holds out hope of redemption... spot on, pretty much.

Awesome, I'm glad I hit upon the right notes even if by complete accident.

Squad Imahiel 'Victuus Priscus'

The second of my Deathwing squads; Imahiel 'Victus Priscus' which literally translates as the 'living ancient'; but can be read as the living dreadnought. The nickname is a playful nod to the age of the miniature, and the venerable status of Imahiel. The watcher that walks beside him is a figure of ambigous portent. On the one hand, having a watcher follow Imahiel marks him for greatness within the chapter, but it may be a harbinger of the sergeant's demise, and final ascension to the chassis of a dreadnought.

The third of my four Deathwing squads, Zhagen is the auxiliary assault squad that supports Belial and Belphegor.

As always, more photo's on my blog (more specifically here.

Lil, all your stuff is looking awesome, and all the little conversions really make them stand out. In the words of Tony the Tiger "They're Gr-e-a-a-t!" :) The battle damage looks awesome too. All in all, very characterful units.

I wanted to ask, because I've been looking for a bit like it, where are the little braziers on the top of the sergeant for Squad Zhagen from?

Edit: The banner on Squad Apollyon is awesome work as well! I really like the added in mythos concept behind the banner.

Awesome work! I like the watcher on Sergeant Imahiel.

Seeing the small Deathwing dagger and the targeting device on the Cyclone termie makes me nostalgic. You sir, are truly blessed by the Lion to have such classic models!

Thank you both. The brasiers are from the corpse cart kit.

more pics here

Squad Belphegor accompanies Belial to war, forming his personal cohort and spearhead of attack. Belphegor is the most senior sergeant of the army and is second only to revered Cain in council to the Lord of the Deathwing. When squad Belphegor takes to the field, the air scorches with lightening, and thrums to the irresistible crack of hammers destroying all before them.

dreadnought Cain next week.

@ Mr malevolent: Cheers man.

@Stobz. Thank you, means a lot.

@Bryan Blaire: Must've run up in someone else's house then. Thanks for the compliment - I ripped the candle idea off Jakob Nielsen so remember to thank him as well next time you bump into him.

Dreadnought Cain

This is one of the centerpieces of the army; Dreadnought Cain, the interred servant of the Emperor and former Grand Master of the Deathwing.

For more pics and analysis please feel free to visit here and have a poke around my other stuff.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The army is nearly complete, and I have big news; Belial is complete. I will be taking pictures of him tomorrow and uploading them here.

Cheers everyone!

@ Komodo: I've listed the parts on my website now (on in the comments section).

I wanted to write an update of what i've been working on today. I've had some interest in the banner I created for Apollyon and, since I enjoyed creating it so much, I decided to create another for my Librarian.

The first thing I do is gather images. This is one of my favourite activities when working on a project. I'm gathering images, quotes and music that inspire me all the time; and when I stumbled upon this old artwork by John Blanche, I knew I'd use it at sometime in the future:

http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x450/LilLoser2011/deathwing%202/photo.jpg

At this point I had no real theme in mind. I liked the image, and it felt right to use with this model.

The initial sketch is very rough. I'm working on shapes, proportion and working in any detail that catches the eye. I'm not really concerned with the final outcome, i'm just trying to cram interesting information into my brain to use in the next sketch.

http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x450/LilLoser2011/deathwing%202/P1010485.jpg

I had a lion's head, but not much else. I knew from my previous attempt at creating a banner, highly detailed images do not lend themselves well to such a small scale. I decided to have a broken blade protruding from the mouth of the lion, and winged background to frame the head.

Below, we can see a rough sketch (on the right) trying to fit all the images I wanted to use. This time I draw to scale, to make sure the Lion's head, broken Blade and Winged motif is not too complicated.

http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x450/LilLoser2011/deathwing%202/P1010486.jpg

And I remember the most infamous inhabitant of Caliban; the Legendary Lion from which the Primarch took his personal fetish. The beasts of Caliban are described as spectral nightmares, neither flesh nor spirit (a bit like Koi, or cats; half in, half out). Fitting then, that a Librarian, who draws upon the power of the warp, should echo the image of the Calibalite Lion in his heraldry.

For this last step I concentrate on technique, form and composition. I measure out the gaps between the feathers, mark the central point of the banner and construct the lion head around the broken sword. I decided to elongate the mouth beyond what is biologically possible to reinforce the nightmarish qualities of the beast. The banner is now ready for painting!

I'll run this through the scanner and put a download on my website if anyone would be interested in this design for their own Dark Angels (or any other chapter; there is no specific mark on there).

Leave a comment below, or on the website. If I get enough interest I'll produce a page of designs to be used in your armies.
