Hey guys I was wondering if anyone has done this?

It would be a cool little idea as I still much prefer our old codex (purely for the aesthetics to be honest). Whilst limited on options compared to the newer 'dex I still feel it could be competitive. I wouldn't take it to a tournament as I know it wouldn't be accepted but just as a friendly game to see in what areas we now excel as opposed to the way we used to play. Also wondering how play styles will differ.

Agreed that there is a certain quality in the older codex that is missing with the 5E version. While I don't use its rules so much these days most of the casual players I often play against wouldn't have a problem with playing against them. Codex Approved, ForgeWorld, old 3E dexes and even custom rules can be used here as long as we don't spring it up right at the beginning of a game - be respectful and give opponents advanced warnings, etc.

When the next 'Dex hit, I re-pointed my 3rd Ed army lists, and found that most of my existing lists hit the exact same points total using the new 'dex. and guess what? They play about the same, only they hit harder. All in all, the update was a boon, even if it forces us to adjust to newer player styles.

I sorely miss the versatility of the old dex's stormtroopers and elite choice inquisitors.

Sure the new dex gave a few extra knight options and made it a psychic army, but modelwise it just became more bland with identical looking power and terminator armours.

And I really hate having to use an SC just to mimic the old dex.

Sure the new dex plays better, but it would have been a lot better, if we hadn't 'lost' the inquisitorial elements and become just another colorcoded chapter of space boys :HQ:

I have to agree with Holy Heretic on this one, just feels a little too space marine-y for my taste. There isn't enough options for the inquisition, like having the henchy warbands. Sure you can make them as diverse as you want but at the end of the day you still only have the couple of options provided by the 'dex. I liked being able to induct guard or other marines as this allowed me to dabble in other armies from models I also liked the looks of or even would just enjoy painting without ever being able to field them. I have to say I only used the ally rules occasionally for an army with maybe 0-1 GK choices in, or played pure GK as it was still a niche army.

I feel the metagame for the 'dex has changed and what used to be a truly 'unique' army is now just another new marine 'dex with a few fancy gimmicks rather than a true reflection of the more intricate machinations that the Imperium has brought forth.

Tactics wise, yes not a lot has changed but we seem to have gained a few cookie cutter lists which seems to attracted bandwagoners and younger gamers to the army expecting the next easy win button after their last 3 or so marine armies have gotten creamed because their respective 'dex has been out for over a month and the honeymoon period is over. Also in our new 'dex there seems to have been a big nod towards mech assault based lists, which weren't very common back in our 3rd ed 'dex as well as our force weapons, making this feel like an 'I want to be in close combat as quickly as possible' army (which I have seen most people gear towards) when it's an anti personal army. Personally to me it doesn't feel like the same army any more and also that we lost a bit of flavour, too and not just because of the name change :D

Overall though I'm happy to have the shiny new 'dex and models although I wish termy armour was a little more different to their power armour, but that's just my personal taste.

Apart form some shoddy rules, and dubious choices, I'm overjoyed with the new dex!

We're far form being a 'silver space marine' army, and are an army in our own right now.

We have all the tools necessary to make varied, interesting, and potent armies. And we have some unique units and wargear.

Awesome!

RIP DH Codex. You won't be missed.

(not trying to incite any old school DH players here.)

In spite of some of the dubious narrative, the new GK book actually better represents the inquisition (all ordos) and their relationship to the grey knights as THE chamber militant for the inquisition. I do miss stormtroopers and the Elite inq but love the more complex henchman squads and the representation of all three ordos in the book.

Slightly OT, I met Gav Thorpe not too long ago and he and I were discussing GW influence on Black Library and vice versa. Apparently there was a loremaster at one point in time at GW who acted as the central arbiter of all things narrative. Gav was the last one and according to him they don't have one now. The game designers have almost free reign when coming up with stories in the codices and the BL guys are basically beholden to GW designers for story blessings.

When I mentioned the bit about SoBs getting slain for their blood he sort of rolled his eyes...
