Hey, I have decided to paint some space marines. I am going to paint my devastator squad in the Storm lords colours. I am rather new to warhammer and in fact this is my first space marine i have ever painted! So hopefully it is not to bad. ;)

I can see from the image the model still needs some touch ups and more detail, but i think its okay for my first try at this colour scheme and hopefully my other modles look better than this. :(

One last thing can you give me any tips on improving my models from what you can see from this one and don't hold back. ^_^

(I don't know if the photo worked oh well)

Here is the second marine The other half will be red. I just through some people may like to see that i thinned down the white and maded it look a lot better than the other model. Another reason is because I wanted to know if this would be a could chaplain colour scheme but with more detail. I don't know much about chaplain or space marines for that matter but I could not find any storm lords pattern for the leaders I if you understand what i am talking about help me. :P

I think once I've done the five I will add more detail and fix up parts that don't look so good.

Very nicely done! This chapter is by far and away one of my favorites.

Keep your paints nice and thin, I know it takes way more time but it's going to seem like you aren't painting anything and then boom, your color is right there in front of you!

Props on the OSL, it looks really well done. That is something I have always struggled with.

Thanks I just saw your post on storm lords and they look amazing!!! Well done i was just wondering if you go from black to Gray to white or if you have a white base coat then touch up part they put Gray in details then final coat of white? I Want to know which way is more effective because from the looks of your I think you have a better understanding of painting white power armour than me.

cheers

I work up from black because the red looks more imposing over a black undercoat then a white.

My white recipe is as follows:

Black base coat

Gray foundation (watered down slightly, usually takes only 1 coat) (I believe Adeptus battle gray?? my pots aren't with me ATM)

Fenris gray (watered down slightly, usually takes 2 coats)

- this is an important stage because you don't want to get anywhere near crevices or edges where you want the darker color to show)

- when I say watered down slightly I am basically just dipping my brush in the paint, dipping into a bit of water, and then wiping the excess off on a sheet of paper

Vallejo White (ridiculously thinned down)

- this takes a ton of coats, and I definitely don't paint all the armor with this, just the raised parts where the light would make the armor brightest.

and finally, patience in droves.

My red recipe is super easy and follows here:

Black base coat

Scab red to a consistent coat (the paint typically runs thin as do a lot of reds, so two coats, usually watered down slightly)

Mechrite red (watered down significantly)

- take the same care here as you would with the white to make sure to keep crevices and shadowed areas that darker color

- this will probably take two coats

Vallejo Red (can't remember which one) or Blood Red (the vallejo should be ridiculously thinned down as well, blood red should be ok)

- this also takes a decent amount of time, but with one caution. The thinned down coats can be deceptive because the color builds up quickly. If you want red-orange marines, build this up a ton, if you don't, do one to three thinned coats.

And last but not least, yellow, which is the easiest part of the paint:

White (yes I prime the helmets separately) base coat

Iyanden Darksun (watered down slightly)

Devlan Mud wash in the recesses then touch up with Iyanden Darksun

Golden yellow (watered down slightly and used as a wash over the top parts of the helm)

- do this very thin, and then build up on the areas where light is most likely to touch, avoiding your recesses of course

Sunburst yellow (only water it down if your paint pot is dry)

- I don't water this stage down at all because you want a nice, thin, crisp highlight on the top most parts of the armor where you see yellow.

- Also, I don't use this highlight everywhere, nor do I follow it up with a white highlight above because it seems like there is too much going on with an already busy model.

To save yourself some time and grief I recommend doing the weapons and backpacks black instead of in the split color scheme. It takes much less time to prime, drybrush, wash and highlight than to do a whole extra section. Split colors are hard already, don't make your work harder!!

My metals are super easy, tin bitz, washed with devlan mud, highlighted with dwarf bronze, washed with devlan mud, and then highlighted with either dwarf bronze again or any gold to get really high contrast.

Hope that helps, sorry for the wall of text!!

Is the parrot the Archenemy? If I were your marine, forget the ork. Aim at the bigger threat!

Just kiddin'. I like the colouring of the marines, though a little intense in terms of shades. I recommend a little grub from fights, since they seem to be in one. I usually go for the legs and knees, where most of the dirt clump up.

Just my 2 skulls.

My Brother Storm Lord, your progress is heart warming! The vanguard vet looks great! The red is very nice indeed. On your black, thin out your grey highlight and don't hit every line, a really thin dry brush works well too!

I am really liking your OSL as well, it looks great! Take some badab black and wash the crevices of the red (and white if you want a higher contrast) to help deepen the shadows.
