BFG space marine fleet

hay

I'm kinda new to B&C and completely new to BFG

I just bought a new space marine fleet around 2300 pts

here's what I bought

2 battlebarges

4 space marine cruisers

4 gladius frigates

4 nova frigates

4 hunter destroyers

3 sword frigates

3 firestorm frigates

3 cobra destroyers

I know a whole bunch of frigates and destroyers xD

I tend to use them as a shield or to harras the bigger ships so the enemy won't know what to shoot at

I hope I can get some advice on this ^_^

thanks

do you have an opponent already? You seem to be abit heavy on the escorts

as much BB's as you can wield and filling the gaps with escorts seems to be one of the major ways to play marines ive bene told. So you should be set :)

Im not to fond of the IN ships though. Theyre cheaper yes, but the firestorm only has forward facing lances for example. swords are basicly the same as a gladius, just slower...

Well, before the 2010 FAQ both of the traditional marine fleets game heavy focus to escorts. Typically they centered around taking two battlebarges + the remaining point in escorts or around 6x strike cruisers and the remaining points in escorts. Either way means something like 500-600 points in escorts.

However, moving to what you've got, it's a good variety of ships to build most build you need with either the armada rules or the new 2010 faq list. Your tactics proposed tactics are well nigh unworkable. Escorts really won't shield the bigger ships and will most likely be targeted with ordnance rather than direct fire if the bigger ships are in range and most definitely will be as your fleet closes. Instead, your are going to want to keep the marine escorts from being the center of attention and pick off ships that you larger craft damage. If you do run them escorts in, you can count on one good turn of shooting before they end up braced and the squadron heavily damaged from the retaliatory strikes since 30cm range is within the firing range of practically every ship in the game.

thanks for the comments

well after reading the rules a couple of times I've to found out that using escorts as a shield won't work :D

(I'm used playing 40k :P)

Demoulius: I haven't found an opponent yet, I'm from belgium and there just aren't a lot of people who play 40k not to mention BFG but thanks for the comment :)

Vaalsh: well I never played the game so my tactics will hopefully become better when I start finding opponents and play a couple of games :) though thanks for the help

Ah Belgium? Well consider me a potential opponent (that is if your willing to cross the border for a game :P)

For tactics think about old fashioned ships with cannons in their sides. You generally have to present the side of your ship to an opponent to be able to fire (not all ships have this handicap mind you)

There are some things to consider with tactics. Plan a few turns in advance because it might haunt you otherwise. Some general tips though:

1: your ships MUST move forward half your movement (unless you use come to a new heading special order if im not mistaken) use this to your advantage by placing torpedoes infront of your opponents ships. Unless they evade they will be hit by hits that bypass their shields and/or to dictate where your opponent would move to. :D

2: keep your fleet together. if you spread out your fleet (like for example in 40k) your ships will be torn apart piece by piece. by staying together you create a target rich enviroment which adds protection to your ships as a whole. If your opponent sees a single ship that is isolated from the fleet it shouldnt be to hard for him to shoot it to oblivion...

3: focus fire. generally you only have so much fire to spread around. Make sure that you find out whatever threat you want to take care of first and then take it out of action. cripple it, force it to brace. anything. Destroying a ship utterly is the best scenario but migjht be hard. If you supress your opponents gunboats/carriers the damage they can dish out in return will be minimal as well!

4: dont get tunnelvision, more or less part of #3 because some things are just to resiliant to take apart first. For example a necron tomb ship on brace special orders. He has a 2+ save against anything you do (except boarding) so dont expect to do to much damage to the thing. But if you do fire all the weapons on your fleet at it, and dont cause enough damage your opponent will still have the rest of his fleet unmolested staring at you. and I can tell you, as ive been on the receiving end....that hurts...alot :(

5: escorts are valuable. To other fleets this might vary but marines have very slim pickiongs when it comes to their ship choices. Outside of the nova we have no lances and you want your bombardment cannons doing damage, not stripping shields... Find a role for your escorts to fulfill and stay true to it. marine fleets need to work like a well oiled machine to work properly, not much room for error im afraid :)

6: speed. Marine ships have it aplenty. use this to your advantage to outmaneavoure your opponents ;)

Marines are (in my opinion) a tough fleet to get to work properly. But when they work, they work ;) find a regular opponent who plays the game (or better yet find a friend who wants to try the game out as well, lend him a part of your fleet for practice matches if you have to) and then just try to have fun :) it can be a hard game to get to know but oh so much fun ^_^

thanks

maybe I'll contact you again someday for a game of BFG but I'm still putting my fleet together :P

I will probably have some trouble finding an opponent here :s

maybe I'll teach the game to myself xD

thank's anyway for the extensive explanation about space marine tactics

  • 1 month later...

hello again :)

my space marine fleet is nearing completion

I've got only one barge left and it's getting it's paintjob right now, and 2 light cruisers

I've just recently ordered a second fleet just because i really liked the models

A tau forge world fleet

here it comes:

-- Custodian class battleship

-- 2 Protector class ships

-- 1 or 2 emissary class starships (I just don't know how many there are in one box :P)

-- 4 warden class ships

-- 3 castellan class ships

-- 2 orbital defense platforms (I just couldn't leave them they looked very nice :P)

I'm gonna take the real tau tactics with this fleet, the custodian will stay in the back and command the fleet, the rest of the fleet will make a firing line. I hope I can cripple the biggest enemy ships before they reach me to board me or something :P

As you can see it is a smaller fleet, this is well in the first place due to a little money problem (I just still need to pay my bills :P) and secondly cuz I didn't want to go over a whole lot of escorts again :P

well what do you guys think ? ;)

Where are the pictures?

And good luck with your Tau, they can definitely spam a lot of markers to annoy your opponents.

yh srry I know I really need to put some pictures online <_< I'll try to get it on asap <_<

here are some pics

Ultramarine Battle Barge, I wanted a more space marine looking ships then those on the GW website.

A strike cruiser:

some Rapid strike vessels:

This gladius frigate was a test to see how I could get the paintjob of GW done but I wasn't very pleased so I painted all the other vessels of my fleet in the blue seen in the above pics

note: don't be to hard on the paintjob I'm not a great painter I just like it

Despite this being the "Other Games" section, that does not mean "Other Races" section. Keep to Board-Related images and discussion only please :D

Oh, and I like your paintjobs for the ships. One of the best things about BFG is, even if you don't consider yourself a good painter, painting ships comes easily ;)

just read the forum rules :)

I'll just talk about my marines then :D

thx all for compliments :D
