Strata
Greetings Brothers, and sisters. I know lately i've been asking alot of my fellows at the fang, and seeing as i've got my packs on their way, now the time has come for them to get a steady footing for the glory of combat and war that is sure to follow them for the saga's to foretell. As such, i've narrowed the style of basing i'm going to persue and would like to see what my fellow wolf lords think, and maybe help sway my final choice. My First choice, is an Ice-world style of basing. Its pretty simple, and not too overly detailed, personally i think it might be lacking alittle bit of detail, Specificly where the ice shelves drop off, maybe a quick bit of modeling sand before priming to make it look like its crumbled in there. http://dragonforge.com/for%20sale%20images/dforge%20items%20for%20sale/Gaming%20bases/ice%20world%20series/25mm%20round%20base%20ice%20world%20series%20set%201%201.jpg My Second choice. I feel it has alittle more detail, And could be painted as cold, snow covered/icy ground, With chunks of shale, or large slabs of ice. http://dragonforge.com/for%20sale%20images/dforge%20items%20for%20sale/Gaming%20bases/slate%20wasteland/25mm%20slate%20wasteland%20set%201%201.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/238316-basing-new-wolves/ Share on other sites
Grimtooth
I like the first one better. Although the second one when done right can look fantastis. This snow kit from Secret Weapon Miniatures looks like it would work perfect with those bottom bases: http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/inde...;products_id=17 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/238316-basing-new-wolves/#findComment-2874036 Share on other sites

Imo, basing should be thought about as much as any other part of modelling the mini. I mean, if you look at a nicely painted mini but it only has an unpainted base, it just doesn't look as sweet as it could be. Right? That example shows basing is important. Now onto the second part, which I think is also important. Contrast. We don't paint RL or historical minis. We don't want to lose the mini in the base like some Stalingrad soldier hiding in the concrete rubble. Having the base contrast in colour and/or depth of colour is very important. So, if your Wolves are grey, no grey bases for them. If your Wolves are blue-grey and you want them on a snow/ice base, minimise the blue in the snow/ice. You can have a blue rim, if you like. But keep the ice white, rather than that old ice look of blue-white. Likewise, black bases for black minis do not work, etc. http://coolminiornot.com/pics/pics14/img4ad43a20b2c77.jpg That is a nice looking Templar. But it gets lost on the black base. Even a grey base would have been better. Brown would have been my choice as it is not part of the colours that compose the mini. If you catch my drift. adary
If it helps, here are the bases I made for my grey hunters, using standard GW base supplied with the models, textured paint, thin cardboard, snow flock, and drybrushing http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vbLAgw7RoJs/Tmp8VpeaS_I/AAAAAAAAAhI/oiODHERfwGQ/s1600/IMG_2055.JPG Here are two bases with snow added, and the unpainted model on top http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VWeZEOsnZ2c/Tmp9c20pQfI/AAAAAAAAAh4/j7Y3Yl3iLA0/s1600/IMG_2061.JPG Step-by-step can be found on my blog Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/238316-basing-new-wolves/#findComment-2874321 Share on other sites

If you play at a club that only has green-grass gaming tables, frankly your ice-world bases won't look good whilst your playing. I think scenic bases look great, but they look better if it matches the terrain you'll normally be playing over! I think scenic bases look great, but they look better if it matches the terrain you'll normally be playing over! Well, there in lays a problem, my local, and really, only game shop of play at is one of two.. maybe three GW's all about the same distance away from me. And ive come to notice, they have a nasty little habbit of cycling and changing out their tables on a regular intervaul, except for the Bunker, but i dont get out there quite as often. The thought i had for doing an ice/snow style base was to match my krieg IG, who are on snowie trenches. Though for those you think i should do something different for them, how about these? I had been thinking of saving them for when i get around to doing my Heresy era Loyalist Luna Wolves. But maybe ill skip saving them.. http://dragonforge.com/for%20sale%20images/dforge%20items%20for%20sale/Gaming%20bases/lost%20empires/25mm%20round%20base%20lost%20empires%202%201.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/238316-basing-new-wolves/#findComment-2875047 Share on other sites

Valerian We leave the planet but only fight on ice worlds, For me snow is full of win as I never used to base my models like that so now my new SW army will all be based on snow bases.
