Captain Idaho
Awesome! I'm excited about it as it feels like the Battle for Calth is getting the treatment of a major incident leading the Heresy down a particular path at it's conclusion and not a silly little book about the Dark Angels that felt it was taking us no where and not even set in the 40k universe until the end. And lot's of Guilliman? What's not to like! No know fear? Abnett - KNF sequel. A DB - KNF sequel. Who are the lucky Legion, eh? ;) Canonical version of Calth, w00t! and next Spring, exciting. +++ Oh fiddlesticks, so what am I going to do with all these "Down with Guilliman and the Codex" T-shirts that I just had printed up, now that Abnett will make them cool and mainstream and all the haterz hate deflates, so no one will appreciate my great T-shirt idea, mate? :P +++ I wonder what Legatus will dislike about this book...? :D +++ Bastian Vergosen = Legatus? ^_^ +++ Nice mention on video2 about Prospero Burns and why Kasper Hawser was used as the main character. And finally, for me at least, someone pronounces Guilliman. Gillymun. Horus, pronounced Horr•us. Interesting. I guess they tweaked Abaddon from its Biblical pronunciation, so I can live with Horus being tweaked too. Ethrion
That's very cool indeed. I liked the idea someone put forward about the Legion of the Damned being fallen loyalists from the traitor legions. Also cool that at some point they are going to address Ollanius Pius whether as direct involvement or the myth thereof. As long as it's not a Rynn's World or Hunt for Voldorius and more like a Battle of the Fang please. Or Helsreach :-) Rynns world wasnt so bad, but the Hunt for Voldorius was probably the only 40K book Ive read so far I struggled to finish (and mind you I finish all the others in one day, two at most). These videos Dan makes are always great and Im glad he will write the first major Ultramarine HH book. Altogether, what lies ahead in the HH series is definitely worth the wait. Sorry scratch Rynn's World, replace with Purging of Kadillus. And I loved Helsreach...IMO it was epic. But I digress, Battle for Calth is gonna be freakin' sweet! I know it wasn't mentioned in this specific Q&A session but am I right in thinking that A D-B will be doing a HH book from the Word Bearers point of view about this at some point or am I thinking about something else... Darkchild130
Abnett can write action like Gav Thorpe, and can write characters like ADB when he really goes for it, so I have massive hopes for this book. Son of Rawl
Sounds extremely promising, wonder if it will leade right into 'Rules of Engagement' short by McNeil, as it seems Calth is a major driving force behind the codex now... Saa
i like when Dan said the words, "bolter porn" to describe this book.. made me chuckle That was the only statement that concerned me a little, especially as he said it as a comparison to his style in Prospero Burns which I thought was an amazing book. Whilst I understand that the battle for Calth is going to be an epic battle in the truest sense of the words, I really hope he doesn't downgrade his own awesome writing style with nothing BUT *pewpew dakka dakka "send in more guns" pewpew* just to placate the PB hater. Captain Idaho
Same as. Last thing I want to see is World War 1 style of "line up and run and shoot" writing. I also want to see some actual tactical swashbuckling between commanders, as I never really feel like anyone has any real tactical or strategic knowledge of fighting a war, but that's a different topic... Darkchild130
To me bolter porn means exactly that, tactics and genuinely exciting battle scenes (like the ghost novels). Anyone can write pew pew dakka dakka crap (I'm looking at you Goto), doesn't mean it's bolter porn. Legatus
Interesting. I am not sure about those 200,000 vs 60,000 numbers. Well, I guess the cultists will have to account for the numerical superiority of the Word Bearers. This might be the first Horus Heresy novel for me to read. I had previously seen a different interview where Abnett talks about that novel . They start talking about "Know no Fear" after 15 minutes or so. What I noticed most were these two statements: Dan, at about 20:35 - "...time for a big pro loyalist novel, I though. Well overdue. So that's what this is. Cause ultimately this is the Ultramarines kicking some serious butt." Sounds good so far. :) Dan, at about 22:06 - "...And also for the fact that the Ultramarines, and this is something that I have discovered while working on the movie, Ultramarines, like the Imperial Fists, get a kind of bad press. They are so big and popular, they must therefor by necessity be bland and awful. (...) What I would love to be able to do is what Graham is doing with the Ultramarines books, which is to write a story about them where people go "god, that's so cool". I want to do a book where you go "Ultramarines are so cool in that book"." Now this makes my a bit weary. For one thing, I don't think McNeill has exactly succeeded in making people appreciate the Ultramarines more with his Uriel Ventris books. And then I also remember Dan Abnett saying something similar about the Ultramarines movie, that he wanted people who saw the movie to perhaps think better of the Ultramarines, and I don't think Abnett has succeeded there either. Bastian Vergosen = Legatus? No. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/238376-dan-abnetts-know-no-fear-vlog/#findComment-2875285 Share on other sites
Captain Idaho
Regarding numbers in the battle; don't forget the Daemons and the like on the side of Chaos. Calth is about to become all but a Daemon World in this book, so there will be some extreme "backs against the wall" moments. Gunslinger87
Which is where people like me come in. Who cares about the numbers? Who cares if its 200 vs 60 and not 150 vs 150 or 10 vs 347? As long as its a great battle and everything is internally justified, these are just numbers :-) And they have clarified legion sizes a while back so his justification is entirely reasonable considering the current canon. (most UM being there, WB being split, but having support of millions of cultists and daemons) It is tough putting the legion that is known to be the largest around the heresy era and must come out largest even after the entire thing is over even with events like Calth at a numerical disadvantage. But people will complain and complain and complain :-) They will particularly complain with references to some obscure bit of fluff they naively believe was perfectly thought out and that such fluffs author put way more research into it than an author who spends almost a year on his novel.... yup... thats surely it. It definitely isnt: "hey guys, what if the Ultramarines were the largest, I mean, super-large, wouldnt that be cool? and why dont we give Corax and Sanguinius wiiiiiings... ooooooooooooooooooooooh, aaaaaaaaaaah" :-) Especially with the HH, weve been told x times: its canon, thats the way it would have been in all previous pieces of fluff were it possible. You may not like it, you may argue against it, you may scream and tear out all of the remains of your hair... but thats about the only thing you can do. Edit: Exactly the same way you can do a whole big bucket of nothing about the new GK fluff. And here I am thinking how a few years from now when somebody actually tries to do something decent (or A D-Bs series of novels come out) and succeeds, half of the people will be running around in the streets with their GK codex in tutus and screaming "HERESY", "What Abominations!", "Noooo, it cannot be soooo" and the like... :-D phew... glad I could get that off my chest :-D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/238376-dan-abnetts-know-no-fear-vlog/#findComment-2875993 Share on other sites
TennisBall
Which is where people like me come in. Who cares about the numbers? Who cares if its 200 vs 60 and not 150 vs 150 or 10 vs 347? I do, it gives a sense of scale, it gives a sense of what each legion was capable of doing. It gives a sense of scope to the battles when you know that 200,000 super soldiers were involved, particularly when the current 40k fluff regards an entire chapter of a measly 1000 going to war as only happening with major threats. If Behemoth had attacked during this time it would have been obliterated given the resources the Ultramarines had at their disposal. Immediately you know that Calth was bigger than Armageddon and any of the Black Crusades combined. The Ultramarines Legion there was the equivalent of 200 chapters. How many battles during the 41st millenium invovled 200 chapters?
