First Topic Ever: New GK shopping

DIDM

Recommended Posts

So I first got into this whole 40K a few months back. I frequent Sherdog forums and there was first a thread about a Jedi Master vs a Space Marine in Terminator armor. Soon after came a straight up 40K thread with a bit of Fantasy thrown in. I lurked in that thread for a while, the whole time I could feel inner bonds being broken. There was nothing I could really see that sparked it, it was a day like no other, but today I became, well for no other way to describe it, one of you fine people. I was in love with Dark Eldar from the start of my intro, but then the GK were always in the back of my mind. I am a good guy, so..........

I ordered these, and have another set of Terminators I bid on and am winning. Like I said, n00b, so I will study hard, and when I am done I will try and pass my test and get into this brotherhood. Gonna get an airbrush and learn a new hobby in the process too!

Welcome to the hobby. :D Painting and modeling are very fun and really at the core of the hobby: GK models in particular, both new and old, look very good. The plastic terminators (the new kits) I find especially fun to work with.

This is the very board for questions specifically about GK, whether it's painting, modeling, tactics, or what have you. ;)

As the others said, welcome to the B&C and the hobby ;) If you haven't yet, make sure you give the Rules of the B&C a quick read through. Other than that, feel free to browse the forums here and ask whatever questions you might have (within the rules, of course) and we'll help ya out. We're a fairly friendly lot down here in the OI after all.

thanks for the kind words

I have been watching a lot of painting vids and reading the codex. I think I made a good choice with OI. I'm gonna mix it up with assassins and Inquisitors with my knights. I probably won't play a real game for around a year. I don't like to lose, and a game as involved as this I need to learn a lot. I have a few local clubs, luckily I live in a big city, Portland, OR. They have WH nights 3 days a week and host big tourneys too.

Looking forward to getting my models in the mail and getting started with this new hobby.

In my most humble opinion, losing is very good for teaching you what not to do. if, for example, you dont have a hammer in a unit, and it gets charged by a dread, it will teach you not to let a squad get charged by something it cant really hurt :D

But I digress, welcome to the forum!

I love 40k, Have done for about 14-15 years. and have slowly but surely developed more and more elite forces. Now I play Draigo wing, which sure is fun (for me). Any questions on paladins and I can generally answer them :D

Just make sure to read the rules, as was posted above by several of our fine members. Grey Knight's are awesome, so have fun!

maybe I misspoke, I don't like going into war blind and unarmed.

I just found this game, I'm almost 32 and never played a TT game. I have this place and a group on Sherdog, a MMA forum, who got me started in the whole thing. Most lessons in life are learned by our mistakes, and losses. I just won't, throw myself to the wolves, so to speak. I have a good mind and have a good plan, but I have no clue in reality. I have seen battle reports, which are pointless for a n00b anyways. I have been a sponge lately, and I still feel like I know nothing. This is a real tactical game, and I feel as though I am a recruit and where I want to be is General. I'm not saying I don't want to play till I am a General, but I don't want to play as a grub.

My models are on their way, then I will work on modeling them, and then I will practice painting, on other models. I'm ordering a cheap airbrush set off ebay and getting a paint set and brushes off dickblick. I want to get my painting skills down and learn my game as I am doing that. I will play a few practice rounds along the way, but I plan on a year from now competing in a tourney and kicking the :P out of everything in my way. Of course I will probably lose, but a Grey Knight never got anywhere doubting themselves.

I realize you responded to this, but I really wanted to emphasize it. It's a good plan to get familiar with the rules, your codex, and general tactics.^_^ Certainly you can ask questions about any of those here.

However, no experience will be nearly as valuable for learning as actually playing the game: and you learn far more from losing than winning. When you lose, you see the limits each of your units can press to, see their weaknesses demonstrated (at times exploited), and learn your army's true limits. Fight to win, even in the face of a sure loss. Not only is it the best way to learn...it's precisely what Imperium forces would often do.

Hey, welcome to the group! And more importantly the hobby :tu:. I see that you are starting with an airbrush, which is rather more advanced than my own painting is thus far, but one bit of advice I can give you is make sure to do a good job/have a good primer! It will save you loads of time, and the quality of the models you produce goes way up! Also, make sure you dry fit any of your models together BEFORE you glue, as it will avoid sticky-oh-crap-I-better-undo-this-quick situations. Finally, I notice a lot of people that are new to the hobby don't remove mold lines from their models... this is essential to a crisp clean look. Happy hunting, its good to see someone who is starting on GK as I did, albeit a few years between :P

As always, thade covers it more eloquently then I can with my meager grasp of the english language ;)

like I said, thanks for the kind words

and I will play and lose, but for the time being I would have to proxy a whole army with chess pieces, heh :D

I just need to actually learn the rules and everything. I'm going to build myself a cheat sheet for rules and stuff, but first I need to read all the rules. I have a new rulebook and the new GK codex. I am working my way through them, but they aren't exactly easy reading.

and the airbrush is not going to be my main painting technique, mostly for big things, and simply because I always wanted to get one. If I am going to play this game, I may as well do it right. It isn't cheap to begin with, so what is an exrtra 100 bucks?

I won't make another thread to ask this, so here is my new ?

I'm not a huge fan of shiny silver, and I know that people say it's your army paint it how you like, but what do you think of this color for a Knight, maybe with a tiny bit of blue added?

If I can impart one single bit of wisdom, which I think is the biggest mistake people ever make playing Warhammer...

Do NOT simply focus on killing the enemies toy soldier.s.. keep your mind on the mission objectives! Every turn, ask yourself "what do I need to do to win the mission objectives?" Is it capturing a specific point on the battlefield? Getting a percentage of your army off the board? Getting the most kill points? Holding the most objectives? Every turn, make sure you have a plan, based on the current battlefield as it looks right now, on how to complete the mission objectives, and then execute it. Things go awry as the game goes on, and no plan that you made on turn 1 is still entirely in effect on turn 5. What I have found though, is by focusing all the time on the actual mission objectives, I am able to improvise on the fly. Too many people just line all their models up left to right and walk forward, trying to kill all of the other guy then remember on turn 4 "Oh.. I need to capture a few objectives, hunh?" and then lose. Don't be that guy :D

I am in the same boat as you are DIDM, though I've been lurking around the net and through my Grey Knights book and all the other websites for a while. I had some model sets and sold them due to an overseas move that's taking a LOT longer then necessary. One thing I did find that was usefull is that you don't need a spray gun. I found that spray paint works just fine. I used spray paint and just regular model paint to paint my dread knight which I sold with all my other models. I cannot WAIT to get back to the states and settled into the real world so I can begin my GK Army anew. My plan is to have a full battle company, around 150 models. I've already calculated that's about $1,800 and that's not including things from forgeworld such as the contemptor style dreadnaughts... they're so beautiful!! I especially can't wait to play a game with the GK, I still have yet to play a game regardless. This was my first full paint job... and even though I didn't have all the paints I needed or the right sized brushes.... one day, soon.

just got my first package in the mail! First thing I'm going to buy is a magnifying glass  these minis are quite small. I have had bigger chunks of food stuck in my teeth than these purity seals, heh.

I just ordered a set of brushes off dickblick. They have minor mishaps in the lettering and such, nothing wrong functionally, so they were cheap. 42 brushes for 14 bucks! link
