Brother Mjollner's Space Wolves

So while I did do a "little" painting this week, I didn't quite get the chance to take any pics...

Finished up the teeth and the scars, for thoes that asked.. Vallejo rosy flesh was the base coat, hit the deepest areas with warlock purple "just tiny dabs, then wash with Baal Red. Then tiny dabs of the purple wash "i forget the name".

Then repainted the teeth in bleached bone, washed with devlan mud, highlight back up with bleached bone, then extreme highlight with white.

I'd like to finish the nails and bionics this week (time permitting), Then I will make sure to get some new pics up. By that time all that will be left are the saddles, and the stuff hanging off them.

Picked up some molding/resin material this week. Need to replicate some shoulder pads (Harold Deathwolf's company)then I can work on the riders.

So, i've finished all the teeth, scars, and bionics. Currently working on the saddles.. then comes basing. Saddles just need to be highlighted then washed this will make them a nice deep leathery brown.

Thanks for looking and C&C are always welcome.

Wolves are mostly finished, a few more touch ups for the saddels then just need to paint the riders. Let me know what ya think..

I think I should change the color of the wire coming from the bionic eye, with the scar I think it's too much red on that side of the face, even though they are different reds, opinions to what color I should change it to?

The snow is added, it's one of the reasons I normally do my bases seperatly. Paint the base's (this was my first group painted with the airbush) wash em, dry brush em, add grass n snow.. super glue on the base, and really grind the base into the snow flock, then hit it with a kicker to insta dry.

Yes they are Secreat Weapon bases (runic mountain), I'm a huge fan of their products.

;)

Don't get me wrong, these look fantastic. But.... :D

I am always a little, I don't know, 'oh' when people don't contrast their bases with their minis. You have a grey, or blue-grey, Marine on a grey Thunderwolf. Then you have grey stonework on the base. The stonework is a great sculpt AND you have painted it well, but not for a grey Thunderwolf.

Maybe it is the photo, I don't think it is my monitor, and maybe GW has simply burnt my retina away during the '90s in The Age of Red, but having X on X doesn't differentiate the two enough for me. Maybe I'd feel differently if I saw them in the flesh? Idk.

You'll notice GW does their base rims that lovely graveyard brown. Nearly no Marine is brown, and so this just looks lovely. A grey base would look fine for a Dark Angel, Blood Angel or Ultramarine. A bit iffy for a Templar and not so good for a Wolf. The Studio Wolves are all on brown topped bases too.

Brown, and white [in the form of snow] are great offsets for the grey or blue-grey scheme. Whilst the Goblin Green bases of yesteryear might be a little too exciting for some, at least you are getting contrast between the mini and the base. Otherwise you end up getting something that is more like a RL soldier being camouflaged onto his base, which isn't what 40K is all about.

Imagine Whitescars on snow, or Templars on basalt or Blood Angels on Mars. It stops the mini from having that high-contrast that is really what makes GW minis so appealing - because of that eye-catching painting.

Hopefully I haven't been too much of a downer, but I have written a lot so maybe I have been. Sorry! :D

Anyway, that's just my opinion ;)

Interesting opinion, what do you think I could do to the bases as they are, without changeing the wolves, to improve? Change the black base rim to brown? add more snow for the additional white? My skin's pretty think, and I know i'm not winning any awards.. I'll take all feed back, and try and paint the next figure better than the last..

I would also enjoy viewing some pictures of your painted pieces... I couldn't find them in your gallery, send me a link if their floating arround in thread somewhere.

Your skin is pretty think eh? Is that thick and thin, depending on where I aim?

:)

I found the B&C gallery to be a bit clumsy and slow to load. I have my images hosted elsewhere :D

My Retribution are not photo'ed very well, but you can see that they contrast highly from the base, which was the same technique that I used for my Templars.

I am not too much of a painter to be honest - I am slow and try to be precise, so it is more of a job to finish. I am trying to change that mindset. The photo I have shown is the one that has turned out the best, though all the minis are painted to pretty much that standard. Photography indoors is something I find harder than of natural settings, tbh. Practise and technique makes perfect, I guess. I'll get there one day.... hopefully :P

Don't get me wrong, it is not your painting at all - you are a good painter. It is the colour composition that I feel looks too 'real life' and not 'hero scale' if you catch my drift?

I have never been a fan of black [or white] rims, painted or unpainted. They look 'unfinished' to me. When you have a painted rim, in something quite neutral like Graveyard Earth, it doesn't look like an abrupt edge or like a plinth, and helps the mini to merge into the table better, even if on a 'grass' table.

I have shown some others your photos and they all think they look great, and are in agreeance with my 'contrast the base from mini' call. That said, we all think the bases do look very good, and there isn't much you could do to change it.

On the next ones, however, you might want to avoid using grey of any kind. If you are doing rocks or stones, perhaps black or red rock would give more contrast. As the Wolves have a 'mottled look' -> due to natural looking fur, the more you can avoid a 'mottled look' on your base, the better. Eg, a busy colour scheme on the mini needs a simple colour scheme on the base.

This is all just our opinion, but I think it coincides with how GW does it.

hoped over to your thread and took a look arround, even left a reply B) thanks for the link. I think i'll try a graveyard earth on some of the rims take some pics and we'll see where that gets us. Should I match the rim color to the dirt portion of the base for conformity? Now since i'm useing these specific bases for two great companies Ragnar and Harold, i don't see me changing the overall color scheme to much. I don't want solid snow bases for all white, or a simple brown earthy looking base. GW is simply gonna have to smooch my fuzzy rump.

++edit++

After I posted this I headed to the gw site and went through their flicker pool attempting to get a nice wide range of space wolves on "stone" bases, most of the stone base rims were pretty evenly split between a brown/mud or a black. After comparing the two, I think you may be on to something Wilhelm, I liked the way the brownish rims flowed better than the black.

Then I found this guy and became inspired.

I just need to find some lazer cut runes

GW just does Graveyard Earth, and if they use GE at all on the base, it would only be one of a succession of drybrushings, from what I can tell. At least that is how I do my bases.

From my RoS blog: "Bases - GW Chaos Black, then GW Scorched Brown drybrushed [drybrushing from here on]. Less GW Bestial Brown and then less GW Snakebite Leather and then even less GW Bubonic Brown and even even less GW Bleached Bone.

The rim is then covered with GW Graveyard Earth via normal painting [not drybrushing]."

If you are willing to pay for them, I am sure someone will sell you laser cut runes :) Those do look pretty good I must say.

Yeah, those bases are amazing looking!! Your wolves would look great on those, hell, anybody's wolves would look good on those!!

I personally love the way your models blend in with the ases Mjollner. But painting the outer rime a brighter color could be all you need to brighten them up.

Those secret weapon bases look great indeed.

This was stage two did some flesh work, I realize the pic isn't that great... but I was very pleased with the faces on these guys. First person to comment on the offcentered scope gets a poke in the eye.. Felt like a real idiot when I realized it was crooked.. need to cut it off and realign it.
