A Deathwing Strike Force work in progress

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/Mr_Malevolent/deathwing1.png

The Introduction

So here I am starting a new thread but unlike other projects I've done before, this force has always been my favorite even back in the days of 3rd edition. To me Terminators are the coolest things to come from Space Marine forces and the Deathwing army has been #1 on my list of things to do for a very long time (14 years or so). From the title you know that I'm building a Deathwing army and until a few weeks ago, I never knew they had a FAQ update. So after finding the FAQ and discovering an amazing thread by a fellow B&C Frater by the name of lilloser (who's amazing thread is HERE if your at all interested), I unpacked the old Deathwing force I've had half finished for 5 or 6 years and decide to start repairing all of my mistakes.

The idea behind this log is to keep a record of up to date progress on this small 1st Company project. I plan on always attaching every response with an update even if its a small update or an enormous one (more of the latter probably) forcing myself to actually focus and work on this project more then the others before. Its also to stop me from being the hobby butterfly I've slowly turned into.

So with all this inspiration from the amazing amount of threads I have followed and the thread idea itself buzzing inside my cranium, I sat down and began to repair my Terminators. Of the 15 I had originally I only have 13 now :D, due in part to my sudden urge to try True-Scale. Many were missing power fist arms and storm bolter arms but thankfully I had an over-abundance of spare bitz so I wouldn't have to gather the cash and make the dreaded bitz order. I also discovered an old Librarian conversion I made before the release of the current Codex:Dark Angels. I had used Captain Lysander and did an alright job on GS'ing a hood and some power cables. However, in order to field the Deathwing force I need a version of Belial (until I can afford to snag a Tyberos figure from FW), so gone was the Librarian conversion and in is my current Belial a.k.a. Degore (I also decided that since the origins of the Dark Angels is of a knightly nature, I've named the important members after the knights of the round table to add some flavor).

Degore

I basically went to town on removing the un-helmeted face right away. In my opinion military forces based in such a harsh unforgiving environment such as the 40k universe would always have helmets on, so I dremelled the hell out of his face! Unable to find a new plastic helmet for him, I found an old pewter Chaos Terminator helmet and removed the horns from it. Now I don't plan on fielding Belial with anything other then twin lightning claws so an old idea came to fruition. I sawed off the claws from the Chaos Raptors Champion and re-glued them onto a nice plastic arm set. I had been wanting to do this for quite a long time and recently a friend of mine 100heathens, beat me to it and developed the idea for his Marines Malevolent Termies. Great minds do think alike I suppose ;) As I type this thread I have actually puttied the head area well and made the claw flush with his arm so I should have those pics up soon. Also the army as a whole will have small candles on their backs and such if I can pull it off in GS'ing later. Also the blank shoulder pads will be fitted with studs as I believe Deathwing Terminator armour is ancient and should be represented as the ancient things they are.

Squad Primus

Squad Septimus

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/9/15/271503_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Deathwing,%20Terminator%20Armor.jpg

Both squads have a nice amount of conversion work. Mainly replacing lost arms and pulling together a Sergeant as well. Below are my two favorite repair jobs.

Septimus Sergeant

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/9/16/271810_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Deathwing,%20Terminator%20Armor.jpg

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/9/16/271811_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Deathwing,%20Terminator%20Armor.jpg

Pointing Fist Termie

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/9/16/271809_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Deathwing,%20Terminator%20Armor.jpg

The Septimus Sergeant has a nice collection of random bitz. The eagle neck thing from the AOBR Captain, a Chaos power sword, Lysander left arm, and a Termie shield to cover the hand/arm area. The pointing fist guy was just made with a Chaos power fist that comes standard in a Chaos Marine box and I think it fits quite nicely. Then my second favorite (next to Belial) is...

Apothecary Lemorak

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/9/15/271508_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Deathwing,%20Terminator%20Armor.jpg

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/9/15/271509_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Deathwing,%20Terminator%20Armor.jpg

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/9/15/271510_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Deathwing,%20Terminator%20Armor.jpg

The work on him was extensive. I couldn't find anymore storm bolters so I decided to convert a plastic Chaos Terminator Lord Combi-bolter arm. After removing the "knife" from under the muzzle I mangled the barrels so I cut some standard bolter barrels and carefully aligned them (I still think they may be slightly off center). The hardest part of this mini was the Narthecium/Reductor and the Apothecary symbol on his shoulder pad. When trying to remove the symbol from an Apothecary backpack my knife slipped and neatly opened one of my fingers. So after gushing blood for half an hour and finally gluing my finger shut I went back to work. I carefully removed the shoulder pad symbol instead and took my time on removing the Narthecium/Reductor. The hardest part of the N/R was getting it to sit flush with the chainfist and it took a lot of trial and error shaving to get it sit right.

So there you have it, a new project but one that I think definitely deserves to be finished. I've joined a local gaming group, so I HAVE to have an army done and playable A.S.A.P. so I can begin to play and enter tournies and such. No one plays Deathwing in my group, so I decided to be "that guy" haha. Let me know what you think and constructive criticism is always welcome.

I have to admit I "stalk" your threads almost as much as Doghouse's, so as an Vet DA collecter myself, I'm really looking forward to watching this project unfold.

Cheers,

Jono

P.S. I've also an extensive DA specific bitz box and am willing to donate some pieces, so if you find there's some stuff you "just need", hit me up and I'll see if I can help, 'cause I'm never gunna use it all.

@Brother Kovash: Thank you. I'm surprised not many people have done that conversion.

@Grotsmasha: YES! I have a stalker! Haha Thanks my friend. Glad your happy with my direction so far.

Mini-update

So all of my local hobby stores were of course out of Greenstuff today and added the general reply of "maybe we'll get some next week". Of course I couldn't just sit there and wait for these guys to finish themselves so I took a chance and grabbed some "Silver Grey" Milliput. First, this stuff is way different then Greenstuff. I mean WAY different. Greenstuff is soft and keeps in a workable form easily letting you fill gaps and rebuild sections of armour in maybe 10-15 minutes depending on your GS-FU. Milliput is in a whole different ball park. Its not easy to work with at all. Unless there is some version I'm not finding, I would not recommend anyone who has consistently worked with GS to try it. Like I said, GS is workable right out of the box, mix it together and its ready. Milliput is strange, its like it begins to harden right after you mix the two parts together. Mix it and try to push it with Vaseline and a sculpting tool and it breaks apart. Above all else it needs a lot of patience to get it to do what you want. Plus it will stick to your fingers pretty badly, so overall its extremely messy. Did it do what I wanted? Yes. Was I happy with it? Eh, yes and no. You will not produce the same level of detail as you could with GS and after it dries it becomes a bit brittle. I washed the areas with some watered down PVA glue to give it some protection. Maybe once I prime it it'll last even longer, hopefully. So here is Belial otherwise known as Degore Milliputted (?)

Like I said it did the job but its got me edgy about it feeling strangely brittle. I'll use it on the other couple of Termies and when I prime tomorrow I'll see how it feels then. Thanks for looking, C&C always welcome.

@hushrong: Thanks brother! Glad you like him as much as I do. I imagine him as though hes wading through some Cultists, flicking the claws and dismembering left and right!

@Galorn: Thank you for the kind words (their what keep me motivated). I hope I can make it to the Rochester Tourney, that would be awesome! Speaking of paint, you may enjoy this update today......

@1000heathens: I'm glad you like the lightning claws. Its crazy how we both had that idea, although I think yours is a lot better then mine. They were such a pain in the :RTBBB: to cut. Painting on him will not begin until I finish at least one squad of Termies. I'll reward myself with characters once I finish something else first, that way I get the rank and file done and out of the way.

@lilloser: Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you'll be following my thread with interest!

UPDATE

So I finished my first Deathwing Terminator the other day and man do I love how it came out. I went with a dirty white scheme rather then the same old bone-white. I finished in about 4 or 5 hours, which is not bad on the first "test" mini (usually 8 hours or more trying to get it work). Its such a simple scheme and I think it worked out well. Hope you all like him!

I am very proud of my freehand on the Deathwing badge!

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/9/19/272777_sm-Dark%20Angels,%20Deathwing,%20Terminator%20Armor.jpg

Finally the other two primed and "washed" Termies waiting to be finished.

And there you go. Hope you like it and thanks for looking!

Dude, test mini is aaawweessoommmee!! Initially, I wasn't fond of the stark white, but then it grew on me as I scrolled up and down the pics. I also really think that the black fists bring out the original Deathwing scheme (probably what you were planning) and its very awesome. Also great looking base. The barbed wire is nice.

Great work so far!

@hushrong: Thanks brother! Your kind words are helping me to keep at it.

@Galorn: Thank you. I have 2-3 Dreads to get together, another 2 Deathwing squads to buy, paint "Belial", make a Standard Bearer, and acquire either Librarian or a Chappy (whichever fits my plans better).

@Shortsonfire79: Thanks brother for the kind words. You are correct, I was trying to invoke the old style Deathwing but giving them my own twist on the well known scheme. Glad you really like it!

@zxyogi: Its always a pleasure when you comment on my threads brother thank you! I will definitely be bringing more to come...

@Squadinho: Thank you very much!

Min-update

So I decided to replace Degore's armament from twin Lightning Claws to.... Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield. I figured a 3+ Invulnerable Save and a nice selection of Strength 8 "stun" hits was a better selection. I kind of wanted him to be a thorn in the opponents side and without Eternal Warrior he would die a very fast death. His pose has seemed to become a bit static but I figure I'd rather have him be static and be a thorn, then to be dynamic and be dead as soon as he starts to fight an enemy squad (*cough* Power Fist*cough* *cough* 5+ Invulnerable *cough*). Oh and I also started the candles on his back and on a squad Sergeant. I will definitely be GSing some melting wax later. Hope you like....

@Galorn: Thank you. My most "complete" army has to be my World Eaters. They pretty much need a good paint job and their ready to fight.

@hushrong: Yeah I'm sad about the claws as well. I still have them intact so maybe I can transplant them on another Termie!

Update

Finished Apothecary Lemorak! What a pain in the ;) he was. When I primed him, a few certain armour joints would not dry at all and made it almost impossible for me to get the white to work. Also the Devlan Mud wash seemed to just soak right into the white, making the edges and joins super ultra dark. It was an uphill battle for a few days with him but I managed to wrangle it back to a nice state.

Great job, Mr. Malevolent! Your white looks awesome and your apothecary bits really work! Custom bits or GK add-ons? Either way, they are awesome! I agree on the hitting them with varnish to make them look more freshly blooded, or possibly tone some of the brighter red back to make them look crusted up. Your Belial is coming along nicely, and if you want a bit less static positioning, try out the hammer that looks like it is flung farther out to the side, as if he just smashed something and is bringing up his shield to block, could possibly help if you feel it is too static. I think he looks nice and menacing as he advances though. I feel many more candles on Deathwing coming on. ;)

@Leonidus: Thank you. I a very happy with it as well!

@Galorn: Thank you and no they do not at all haha

@hushrong: Thanks my friend. I will definitely be doing that a.s.a.p. I need to get some Tamiya red so I can start making nice chunky gore B)

@Bryan Blaire: Thank you for the kind words and thank you for the suggestions, greatly appreciated. As far as the bits on him, no he is done by carefully trimming the parts off the Space Marine Command Apothecary. And yes more candles are in store :P

No real update today on the ol'Deathwing everyone.

However, big news.

I am now a part of a 4 player team for Adepticon 2012.

Yeah I'm excited too.

Now an even bigger reveal, we are all playing Badab War Space Marine forces.

My force will be.....

CARCHARADONS!

Work will start as soon as I possibly can. Hopefully when my old stuff starts selling and my new COMMISSION CLICK HERE site start popping I'll be able to start ordering those wonderful FW kits. Still, come January if I haven't already started them, you will see me produce a very gorey Space Shar... I mean... CARCHARADONS force. Now I just have to tell my wife :/ haha

Thanks for looking my friends.
