OSL eye lenses

the bit where the lenses are supposed to "glow" so you have to paint the glow effect on the rest of the helmet.

I'm just whining i think because I think it looks incredibly messy, and I don't "get" why eye lenses would glow!?!?

Now I get you. Not really seen this on many marines and your right about lenses. Not really a reason for them to glow unless on purpose (Night Lords for example to intimidate). Most just go with an edge highlight to make them look a little glossy.

Not sure why you wouldn't like it. For those that suck at it, yeah I can understand.. but when done right, I think it looks amazing.

As for WHY we would want them to glow, there's two reasons I can think of. Natural intimidation.. and awesomeness. Examples:

Natural (this is why I think it's suitable for Space Wolves).

..and Awesomeness (and personally why I think most people do it).

Also, whether a recent trend or one that's been around a while, OSL is usually done on more things than just the eyes. Plasma gun reactors are perhaps one of the more striking.

Jump pack exhaust manifolds, auspex/biker/heavy weapon/drop pod viewscreens, torches and fire elements, tank searchlights, etc...all of these I've seen done extremely well and add sooo much to the illusion of realism and are one of the major things I see that separate high-rated Golden Daemon competitors and the rest of us.

When done poorly, though, the notion of OSL is completely lost and makes the model look confusing and you just wanna take a spray can to it.

I'm yet to see one that makes me think "oooh AWESOME" I actually think they usually detract from the illusion of realism - unless you are trying to imagine that everything takes place in sufficient low light conditions, where an auspex would blast out enough light to turn a marine into a lighthouse

Aye, I tend to largely use multed colours for my marines. the main issue I'm having is skin and having enough motivation to paint and get the eye peices to at least look there, glaring.

I feel eye lenses should stand out a little, but not enough that it's immediately eyedrawing, the model as a being matters more.

Except IR goggles and Light amplifing does not glow. It would draw fire. Hrrrm where coud he be? Maybe that bright red dot is his eye. Pop and dead marine. And lot of money and training down the draind and one guy who will not be hang out from now on.

Oh yes the small dull red glow from the 3m chap in bulky armour running towards me with a chain axe ...

Don't forget the howling warcries... and if the game, Space Marine, is any indication, running full tilt at the enemy makes a pretty hefty stomp.

Marines do not just run at peeps. There is a ton of fluff books talking about Guerilla warfare. Heck there is an awesome short story about some WolfGuard fighting DE in Tells of the Hersy. Sometimes you need to find cover and sit. Can't do that with glow sticks for eyes.
It largely assumes space marines are stealthy, I can't imagine them to ever be stealthy. Glow eyes or not glow eyes, miniture tanks which hates everything you stand for is very much a shock trooper force. I imagine a couple of lights would add to that effect quite nicely, not too shiny, but when you get too close. They will be the last thing they will ever see.

Guess you don't do irony then

We know that they shouldn't have lighthouses strapped to their helmets and there is a world of difference between your glow sticks and some gentle washes around the surrounding area to show a modest red glow. However, when you take a look at troops wearing pngs etc. through your own night visions devices then they do glow a tadge.

Besides, I've not yet seen an ambush work too well on the table top and it wasn't because the opponent could see the painted lenses on the tiny plastic toy power helmets ...
