Jet Bikes

So another project I’m working on….

Far too long ago I was asked about building a squad of jet bikes for a client that turned into a perpetually on the back burner project as I had few ideas at the time on how I wanted to do one. Even after researching the designs in the Horus Heresy art books along with numerous third party sources I could come up with little on how to do my own take on it. In the end I wanted it to be a somewhat generic model that I could sell in my store that was useable across many game systems and not just for those seven foot tall genetically enhance super warriors we all know and love. But as luck would have it the client was extremely patient and I eventually wore down and just started it.

The trick has been coming up with the front end. As with a car this is usually its most striking feature and I wanted to make sure I got it right. First off, I wanted it big and intimidating and pictured it as a mechanical shark swimming through the skies. Finally after starting and restarting the project six or seven times I have something I like:

It’s not much yet but it’s a start. As for the rest of it, once the center section is done I plan to give it a sexy rear end with turbine engines on either side, a set of stubby wings, a tail, and three huge jet exhausts coming out the rear. So what do you think so far?

As always, more to come….

Well someone put the idea in my head last week about doing a more "eagle"-like front end on the jetbike and that got me thinking. After much internal debate I decided “Why not?” and set out to build it, and lo and behold it actually turned out really nice.

Of course you know what that means now, don't you? I now have to offer TWO jetbikes so that people can have the vicious "shark" design or the more elegant "eagle" design. Just what I need, more work....

Oh, there are pics:

Hopefully next week I can get back to working on the body along with a couple of engine designs.

I like both designs so far and will be getting the "shark" design for my Space Sharks and the "eagle" for my Dark Angels. You have effectively doubled the amount of money that I will be giving to you when you have kits ready. The strange thing is that I'm actually excited to spend double the money. That is some excellent business skill you have.

Machinator, do you plan to make the weapons layout changable for each jetbike? Or is each jetbike to have a different weapons layout?

Very good work though. I like both designs that you made. Can't wait to see the final pictures of each jetbike.

For now they will just have the dual guns in place of the eyes. I've been pondering how to do an "attack jetbike" with a second crewman and heavy weapon but am still mulling that over. But I need to get these done first :D

Nice,

How much will one bike cost?

I like both!

Simply AMAZING work

Thanks! I haven't set a final price yet but it would be somewhere around $20US.

The attack jetbike could look like the picture in the Horus Hersey artbook, where the second rider/gunner is in back of the front rider. The picture looks like a charoit that sits in back of the driver.

OOh, I like that idea! I was planning to put the gunner behind the pilot but I really like the idea of him standing behind a cowl instead of being seat. Looks like I have more work to do :o

WOW ! That's a really good start.

Your plasticard skills are amazing.

Can you post a picture with a space marine nearby to have a better idea of the scale ?

Once I get the mid and rear sections done I'll put up some pics for scale. It's going to be pretty big though, about 3.5 inches long.

More updates today. I've been able to flesh out more of the middle and rear sections and it's really starting to take shape. Once I figure out how I want ther rear section to look I'll be able to move onto the engines.

Which brings up the next question: What should I name these things? (i.e something non-WH40K specific)

Work continues today with the rear section and on the jet engines. I made a few modifications to the rear to make it look a little more streamline. But the big project was a pair of engines for the two types. The first is a turbine and the second has a grated cowl similar to the front intakes. Both will use a jet nozzle I turned on my lathe out of a piece of ABS plastic.

Little by little it's coming together....

I really like both.

I have only one critisims. I think there should be a little wall between the driver and the turbine/jet. Could you imagine the damage a krak grenade would do if it were sucked into the Nozzle? Bye bye genetic super human

I think each set should go with one of the fronts. I suggest the shark with the grated cowl sideways (this way it'll represent gills) and the eagle with the turbine (no reason yet).

I like them both, what about making the engines a separate order part so I can have Shark noses with turbines? I'll end up buying both patterns so it really doesn't matter to me in the long run.

Yes, my plan is to offer the turbine engine with the shark front and the grated cowl for the eagle front. However, if a customer wants a different configuration I'll have no problem doing that :tu:

I'll probably offer the engines as a seperate item in my store after the intial launch of the Assault Speeders.

Perhaps add horizontal fins to the shark-chosen turbine? Just small ones use for making the turbines look more flight capable.

One vertical for the shark on the top back end, and two diagonal for the eagle would also look pretty stylish.

I like those ideas. I was planning to add some fins to the back and two diagonal fins on the the square engine would look good.

I think if the Assault Speeder catches a krak grenade in the turbine it's a bad day for the rider either way ;)
