Basing ideas?

Hey guys. I am looking for some basing ideas for a future army. I have been trying to decide on a new army to start over with and enjoyably paint. I have decided to go with a somewhat official color scheme for my army which is honestly a first for me. I have decided that I wanted to build an army using the wolf army list. This has nothing to do what army lists work or don't work, the idea is I have really enjoyed its playstyle of being agressive yet shooty. After a night of brainstormin I awoke with the idea of doing a renegade army based around the idea of having juggernaught riders. However I didn't want to do a true khorne bererker army. In stead I am going to do a chapter of marines starting on the road to damnation that uses the wolves army list. The idea is I want to use the juggernaught riders and I happend to think back to the chapter in the chaos codex that uses the juggernaught as the army icon. However the knights of Blood name seems rather bland even though its what GW gave them oficially. So I am going to go with that red and black scheme for the army and mix loyalist and chaos marine parts while avoiding any and all imperial eagles yet avoid the really chaosy spikes and mutations and horned helmets. I want them to look like a true blend of renegade marines who happen to have a slight devotion to khorne but still feel they hold some ties to humanity as its defenders. They just do it there way and make use of the gifts of chaos to achieve there endgoals. Granted a few thousand civilians be killed if it saves the planet right.

Anyways I am torn on base ideas. I am going to start off with a display board for the army and build the bases around that. So the ideas would be for a good looking base that might help fit the armys background some, yet also help make the army stand out.

So the first question...do I go with predone slots for the troops so they have their specific places, or do I just do a board that matches the bases and simply have the bases stand on top? They look better with the precut slots for the army and there is less chance of the models falling over, however it doesn't leave any room for army list adjustments or changes to the size of the army if the tournaments vary in points.

The next issue is what type of theme should I go with for the army. Should they be running a muck in the ruins of a city or trekking across a wasteland looking for a victim. Should the world be alien looking or feel like a place I can visit on earth. Should I stick to the grey colors I have in abundance or do something different. (I have two quarts of paint, one is a shadow grey, the other is ghostly like grey, used for painting terrain and display boards and I have alot left so sticking to this color might save on some costs).

Working on the idea of the saving money, and using the colors I already have that sort of limits me. I could do a city ruins, or a moon cratered world. I could do a snowy mountainous hillside with lots of blood and carnage or a volcanic wasteland typical of chaos. I can always add some flavor by picking a nemisis to have littering the display and bases such as slaughter orks, killing guards man, laying waste to loyalists sent to bring the army to justice, or showing the pansie elves its not productive to pick flowers. So many ideas to choose from its hard to narrow down the ideas.

Now..that being said, the easiest for me would probably be to do a snowy tundra as I have a large container of woodland scenics snow flock. The lava world might also be pretty easy as all I have to really do is the display board in lava and that means the bases could be kept simpler with mostly just strewn rocks scattered about or I could do some extra sculping to make lots of lava flows but that also means the display board might be more tedious to make it match more. The ruins could be fun, but it means also investing in some of those plastic terrain kits which I could do or I could build my own and make my own rubble. The idea of adding a nemesis is good but which army then.

So any ideas that would help make the army work. if you need to know the color scheme, here is the colorscheme I am going to go with.

Agreed, for some reason I'm getting visions of bases with small channels, like the Marines are walking over melting snow. Maybe glue down modelling sand to look like tiny rivulets of water are flowing around, and maybe bits of foliage sprouting up?

My standard basing is primarily a mix of sand, small gravel and black pvc bits (I found a bag of this at a hobby shop specialising in train sets; its used for either to depict coal or the rocks between rail track), and painting the rim of the base with a Leperous Brown. Gives it a desert/wasteland portrayal.
