Squadinho
Hi guys Finally finished assembling my AoBR box on Sunday and in the process discovered that the cheap starter kit of tools is horrible! The modelling knife and file are terrible. Only decent thing was the plastic cutters! Anyway, I've been browsing around and noticed that the Citadel modelling files seem pretty good, then I came accross a brand called The Army Painter. Has anyone had any experience of their modelling files? Another brand I came across was Gale Force Nine. Does anyone have opinions of them? Similarly, can anyone recommend a good quality knife? Also, what are diamond files used for? Finally, on to the topic of paint, specifically primer. As I'm gonna be priming my models hopefully this weekend, I was wondering what The Army Painter black primer is like in relation to the Citadel black spray. Many thanks! PaintMyBits
I cant comment on army painter but i use vallejo grey primer and its good for all colours as a primer. Especially lighter ones where i airbrush black into the recess' to pre shade then the base colour over that for instant lowlights. Elric the Silvercoat
You don't need to use diamond files for your minis, they are used for really hard stuff like granites and stuff like they. ninjaturtlethug
For hobby knives you can't go wrong with Xacto. Any acrylic paint will do the job, but I've found that citadel paints have more pigment in them than other brands, especially when it comes to metallic's. Though I haven't tried gale force nine paints, I did buy their version of green stuff to save some money, and found that to be a bad choice, because of that I probably won't buy from them again. DIDM
I'm looking at brushes right now, and at dickblick I found this set brush set it is less than half list price, so that is a plus, and it seems like it would only need a few more brushes to make it a complete set. they have tons of stuff too student sets I'm no professional, so may as well start with the cheaper ones my reading is baddddd today it seems. Here is a link and a review link * Price: They are way better priced than the citadel paints. You can get paint triads for $8. That's three paints at 15ml each, for a total of $0.178/ml. Citadel paints are $3.70 for 12ml, or $0.308/ml. That's 75% more expensive. * Containers: They come in droppers instead of pots. The dropper has a bead inside that gives you a really good mix when you shake them. You can dropper out as much/little that you need at a time and you don't get that paint sludge that can form along the edges inside a pot. The dropper can also make mixing color in a pallet much easier. * Quality: I can't notice any difference in quality between my Reaper paints and the Citadel paints. They're easy to control and have a nice consistency. I had to do two coats of the really light grey to cover the black primer when doing that devilfish, but the same thing happened with the citadel paints when I did those test marines. hopefully that last part helps, maybe the brush part too Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/238797-advice-on-buying-some-tools-and-alternate-brand-paints/#findComment-2880872 Share on other sites
Hemal
Go to Maplin and buy their set of PCB files for around 1/3 of teh cost and they are just as good - + you get more f them/ Same with most specialist tools, they are applied in a wide variety of situations and the more commonly encountered products are going to be cheaper... darth_giles
I get my knives, files, and most of that at a hobby store. My pin vise is a GW one, but that's because its the only one I can find regularly. Most of the model train and tank shops now push dremels over pin vises. Squadinho
You don't need to use diamond files for your minis, they are used for really hard stuff like granites and stuff like they. Ah, thank you! For hobby knives you can't go wrong with Xacto. Thanks for the advice, looking into getting one as we speak! Though I haven't tried gale force nine paints, I did buy their version of green stuff to save some money, and found that to be a bad choice, because of that I probably won't buy from them again. I spent about an hour in a independant retailer and they didn't really have anything good to say about Gale Force 9 products, so think I'll steer clear of them. Just got myself a 3 pack of Formula P3 files after being recommended by the guy I was chatting to in the shop. Gotta say, they seem pretty good after a bit of mold-line removing this evening. Also got myself a tin of black 'The Army Painter' primer. Will see how it goes! Thanks all for replies. <_< Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/238797-advice-on-buying-some-tools-and-alternate-brand-paints/#findComment-2881746 Share on other sites
Brother Immolator
Vallejo paints are exactly the same as gw ones.Gw switched to a new manufacturer of paints for their current set,so instead of dropping the line vallejo changed names and still markets them. They have and the old washes too.
