Rage, Bloody Raaage....

Hi everybody,

Well just to prove that my 40K Attention Defecit Disorder is still in effect I have manged to get distracted and start another army that I will probably never finish.....

Just as a bit of background as to why though I thought I would explain.

I have been collecting GW stuff for in excess of 25 years and as you would expect have accumulated quite a bit of "stuff".

Unfortunately though it has sort of started to take over my flat, and knowing that I will no doubt get more "stuff" for Christmas decided it was time to have a good clear out.

I have what my friends affectionately call a "magic cupboard" in my flat, a sort of 40k Narnia style cupboard that never seems to run out models...

However the cupboard is now full so I decided it was high time to have a clear out and whilst I was doing that I found this:

As older members might realise I have had this box, untouched, for quite some time!

I didn't want to get rid of it though. I remember buying it all those years ago as I loved the idea of black clad, blood crazed, vampire Space Marines. What I didn't love though was the idea of painting the red Marines go with ithem.

However with the new Blood Angels Codex it's possible to create a complete Death Company army. Admittedly it's not a great army, but for a bit of fun I thought I would put these old models to use and make up a low model count, quick to paint DC army for a bit of fun.

I also happened to have some of the new plastic DC in the "magic cupboard", and found lots of spare Rhinos and a couple of Land Raiders (there really is a lot of stuff in there!)

So last weekend I built these:

http://i1018.photobucket.com/albums/af307/MacraggePDF/Death%20Company/Picture006.jpg

That gave me enough left over bits to modernise my old metal Death Company, so a head swap later and some of the new plastic bolters gave me these:

Of course due to their Rage USR these guys need transport so next came:

And:

And no DC army would be complete without:

The plan is to get these painted up pretty quickly, just to see if I can (I am a veeery slow painter).

I still have to build another Dreadnought, 10 more DC Marines and of course Astaroth, but hopefully should get them done this weekend and start painting this week.

Hopefully.....

Cheers Valkyrion, you are the first person to spot the Sepultura reference! :HQ:

I must admit the Chaplain is really the main reason I decided to keep these guys.

The models themselves have aged very well, I think I have had them for about 15 or so years, but they are a little bit small now compared to the new plastics.

Especially their weapons, so I seriously considered either ebaying them or just getting shot of them.

But I do really like the models and love that Chaplain so I decided to give them a go and I'm really glad I did.

Even though the metal models are slightly smaller the new plastic arms were pretty easy to fix onto them and I think they have vastly inproved them, and I get to use the old bolters on my upcoming pre-Heresy Ultras (if I ever get around to doing them....)

I just need another plastic boxed set of Death Company as I want to put one of the new back packs on the Chaplain, then I get started on painting him.

I have made some good progress with the Land raider too which I will have photos of later tonight (can't upload photos at work unfortunately).

Looks like I need to re-check the codex, because I could've sworn that a full DC army hadn't been an option since the 3rd Edition Chapter Approved compilation. Either way, it looks like a very good start. Those old metals have a very different look from a lot of the modern figures; at one time they were considered more dynamic- although the plastics at the time the comparison was made were more like AoBR plastics than modern multipart ones.

You got any classic Rhinos or RT-era Land Raiders in there?

Add Astorath = unlimited DC troops. Each troop max number is 30. plus for every five DC you can add a DC dread. (up to the max number of troop slot of course).

Thanks guys, I feel under pressure now to do the old 2nd Edition models justice! :)

And yes you can indeed have a full Death Company list, but to be honest the reason that you don't see that many builds like that is because it is a fairly pointless (or rather pointfull if that's a word?) army to some extent.

You can get pretty much the same effect by putting a Sanguinary Priest with Blood Angels assault squads as there is a chance they will also get Furious Charge as well and are a lot cheaper.

But to be honest I just like the DC models and hate painting red so I am going this route, and besides that it is a very low model count army so it's cheaper and quicker to paint! :)

Ok so I had some problems with photobucket last night so I have created a flickr account and think I have figured out how to use it (me hate compoota!).

So I have some WIP shots of the Land raider. These photos are pretty bad though as I didn't use my usual camera but give a fairly good impression of where it's heading.

There is still a bit to do, this is roughly 4 hours work so pretty quick for me, but I still need to do a bit of detailing and then some heavy weathering.

Looking at the photos has made me think I should redo some of the metallics as they are a bit dull right now, and I obviously need to add the hurricane bolters, assault cannon and top hatch but these are being painted seperately.

However I need some feedback really as right now I think it looks a bit boring, the black makes it look like it is still just undercoated. I will be adding chipping and dust weathering to it which might lift it a bit but I was wondering if it needs more red on it? The other possibility is some devotional text or decals, maybe some blood drops or something? Any suggestions?

As you said, the metallics need brightning and maybe add one or wings/skulls/scrolls, but other than that I think it looks good. It's not that the black is boring, it's that the silver is too dark and there's no 'pop'. You can't make black pop (or I can't, anyway), so you have to make the other bits pop. All the details looks good, the lenses and seals and eagle wings. I'd just brighten up the silver.

  • 2 weeks later...

Cheers guys, apologies for the lack of regular updates, work has been a bit hectic but I also wanted to wait until I had something worth posting.

I haven't been able to do any more work on the Land Raider as I am waiting for some weathering powders so I thought I would start on the Dreadnought.

Once again apologies for the not so great pics, I am still getting the hang of the work's camera.

Obviously still work in progress but apart from the arms and some other small bits it's almost done.

The plan is to get the Dread finished this weekend but then unfortunately I have to take a 2 week break from painting Death Company as I have to paint some Ultramarines.

I will keep you guys up to date though, as always cheers for looking. :HQ:
