I have a Soul Drinker army WIP, and for me how the story is portrayed in the books however frustrating (I didn't want to see them wrote out of the IP) creates an intresting set of plans for the continued survival of the chapter, the story in my head the way I have it is.......

After the imperial fists capture the surviving marines sarpadon is placed in a cell with wards that nulify his powers, the librarians of the imperial fists begin screening the soul drinkers for the taint of chaos, many of the survivors pass years of there probes, the high lords of terra still have use for marines who are suicidal to prove there loyalty to the imperium (with searpadon's powers nulified his hold on them with his twisted ideas is severed), now that the high lords of terra are involved the fists are no longer free to dispose of the chapter and are forced into a deal that keeps the chapter alive. The deal involves appointing chaplains from every chapter to stuard the soul drinkers back into the light of the Emperor (I have this idea that the chaplains assigned to the soul drinkers are Newly selected by there own respective chapters to be chaplains this assignment though temporary gives them combat experiance before beign charged to care for there own chapter) this idea mainly caters to the lure of chaplains that I have come to like above all others in the space marine story. I can now model all my squad leaders as such and all my other leaders also, due to searpadon's heresy librarians are no longer part of the chapter as the risk of another coruption is to risky, an inquisitor is also now part of there command structure to maintain a watchful eye on the soul drinkers.

 

I haven't gotten as far as recruitment and such but this is the basis of my army I have as a WIP from a modeling pov I think once I am done it is going to look awsome on the table!

I see there is allot of pushback for the redemption story but think of the possibilitys this can create!
