A lot of people talked about it when Space Hulk dropped but I don't think anyone has done it, or at least if they have I haven't seen it - surprising because he's in a similar pose. Personally I decided I'd paint up my Space Hulk minis as BA and objectives as intended, and then if I somehow got my hands on a second set somewhere down the line I'd convert those into Ultramarines.

TheDarker, have you written any freehand tutorials or anything on how to improve freehand skills? If so then I'd love to read it.

I'm gonna have to agree, they look great. You've got a really good style going for you.

The freehand work is especially impressive. I don't think I've ever seen ammo counters painted on guns in 40k either... I think you're going to have to write a letter to GW asking them to make less detailed models just for you so you have lots of flat surfaces to make look excelent.

Absolutely stunning! Like 'em a lot ;)

...and I thought, that I could paint :(

^this. I think I'm going to have to stop saying 'yeah I'm a pretty good painter' now. I've just started a sizeable Ultramarines project and would be very grateful if you'd consider writing a tutorial as requested by other posters

*salute*

Saa

Incredible skills. As someone who also freehands insignia, but with the dexterity of a blind chimp, this stuff is absolutely mind-blowing. If the bases were about a foot taller I'd say you should put them in GD. ;)

The termi on throne entered the Spanish GD of last year. No options, considering the level of the event (and this year was even higher). And you´re right about the bases: in GD, bigger means better, it seems ;)

Actually, i didn´t. Maybe some day, but i didn´t do anything "magic" or strange, is just paticence... but next time i will write one B)

Yellow trims. Check.

Red weapons. Check.

You even got the brighter blue with less magenta. Awesome.

However, I did notice that the fallen terminator's helmet has the colours inverted. Was that on purpose?

Of course. As an owner of the old Ultramarines Codex, i follow his commands to the letter, even if that means yellow and red. Actually, i think that the new "let´s make them darker and use gold, because gold is cool" is pretty lame. You can paint red and yellow and still have a good mini. Oh, and the helmet was just something i wanted to try. Red helmet is papa Smurf? Ok, why not do something like Imperial fist, a red strip on the veteran helmet. I liked, and i think i´m gonna use it on more stuff :( :)

But i have more examples of freehands, here :

You know, freehands it´s like painting, but small (and now the chaplains will go for me...). The key is... knowing that you will not have the same detail that on bigger minis. Look at the rhino. If you look carefully you will see that the custodes are relatively "simple". I mean, no eyes or something, You just have to paint the basic color and then one or two details, that´s all. Pulse, you need pulse.

Hum, i will try to write a tuto for the next freehand, if i remember. Oh, and thanks for voting and your kind comments! ;)

1st: Amazing freehand, that's truly inspiring stuff right there. Epic. Any tutorials on that would be pretty sweet. Also, I never quite know what kind of details to put on all the data screens; what you have there gives me a good idea or five. B)

2nd: If I may offer a suggestion or two...

Your paint (or the primer) seems extremely thick or rough, and it really shows on your infantry. Did you prime in humid weather? That tends to cause this type of sandpaper-like texture, and unfortunately it really detracts from the quality you're putting into it since it obliterates all the fine details.

Your source lighting on the eye pieces is a good start, but it's a little too much or like it's forced on there, especially on the terminator. The glow on the armor is too sharp for red lighting (and lighting in general), as usually red light is mostly absorbed by what it is cast upon. The more subdued glow you did for the Ferrum marine looks a lot better.

Just some thoughts :P.

I have a Damocles in the workbench. It will be really funny to paint all that screens. I will have to find other 80`s games to put on them... seems complicated...

Yeah, not perfect and i know, but also tell you that the "zoom" doesn´t help on the "thick" paint. The ferrum marine and the veteran with the axe are similar, but one looks better than the other... And here you can see all my "glowing eyes" to the date. Hope i´m getting better, the first was the termi, second the ferrum marine and third the veteran. I think i´m improving! ;) ;)

The upper-left screen in your Rhino... are they playing Space Invaders?

Yep, i think it fits the Space Marine. It´s basically what they are XD
