CrimsonGuards Space Wolves: test figure up!

I recently bought a Forge World Space Wolves Dreadnought and I'm in the process of painting the little bugger. Also I ordered a battleforce and managed to get my hands on a box of 13th company Wulfen ;) Next Saturday I will be playing my very first game of 40k with a buddy of mine and I'm really exited about it. I bought the codex when it came out but life intervened and made it virtually impossible to start playing a new game-system (I already own three Warmachine armies).

any advise for newbies to the game will be greatly appreciated !

Advice to newbies? Click on the link in my signature block and read the article. Next, read Brother Ramses' FAQ 2.0, especially the advise about how to buy a Space Wolves force; it'll help you prevent wasting your money. I'll try to find that for you and link it in.

Welcome to the Fang,

Valerian

Thanks for the welcome! :)

I got my hands on a few old White Dwarfs with some Space Wolves info in it and there was a whole section about the 13th Great Company.

It was White Dwarf 283 and held info about the 13th Black Crusade and the lost company that persued the Chaos Marines in the Eye of Terror and also had a big section about converting regular Space Wolves with bits from Chaos Marines to create the 13th Legion look.

It sounded really cool but I was wondering if this theme hasn't been overdone by now. Are there still a lot of 13th legion players out there? (using the regular SW codex). And does the "new" SW sprue mix well with the chaos ones? (the conversions in the White Dwarf were done with the old Space Wolves models ofcourse)

You will be fine using the new codex and new sprues.

13th Co has evolved since the army list was first released with Codex Eye of Terror. That army was a full blown niche/fluff army to play because you were severely limited in unit selection and unit availability, for instance no vehicles or TDA at all.

As a former very dedicated 13th Co player I was hoping at least for a page or special character to unlock a 13thrune Co again with the new codex, but no such luck. That being said, you can still work within the new codex to do one of two things,

1. A self-restricted 13th Co where you limit yourself to only units similiar to the old codex. A quick list could look like:

Wolf Lord

Rune Priest (multiple rune priests representing time in the warp)

Rune Priest

WG in power armor pack (old Storm Claws)

WG in power armor on bikes (old Storm Claw bike packs)

GH (old Grey Slayers)

Fenrisian Wolves

Long Fangs

Or

2. You play an unrestricted 13th Co themed list where you modeling represents the 13th Co not your build.

Welcome and have fun.

Hmm, I have to think about that one then. I noticed lack of Terminator Armor in your list though and this might influence my decision. I really like the look of those terminators.

Well like I said, you are more then free to create a 13th Co themed Space Wolves army and will catch next to absolute zero flack for it. I am about as dedicated 13th Co player as it is with the old Eye of Terror codex and have no problem whatsoever if you had terminators in your 13threasoning Co themed army.

For the old 13th Co players it was a matter of personal accomplishment to make do with the limited list. However we were fortunate enough that the Eye of Terror 13th Co was fairly balanced elsewhere in stats and abilities to get around it. We are lacking that balance now when we try to make a true to form 13th list.

Now one thing that you need to consider is that the 13thrules expressed in the Eye of Terror codex reflects a portion of the 13th that jas been in the warp for 10000yrs and lack of equipment support. Nothing prevents you from creating and playing a 13th Co that has been in the warp for only a couple of thousand years and has not yet lost all their equipment or vehicles.

i thought the thirteenth didn't take any vehicles with them? might have to reread prospero burns again! you can always use salvaged vehicles, sure they might not be able to take them with them when gate'ing from one planet to the next but i'm pretty sure they'll use a stolen/salvaged vehicle when needed.

Being a painter/modeler, I have recently finished a 13th Company Rhino. I don't really care if the 13th didn't take them through the warp in my modelling world I can use and paint whatever I want, however I want and i'm not bothered if it goes against the precious codex, and anyway if you do play the game you can fit it into your fluff or you can use it as a mod'ed vehicle or something. Just thought I'd share my opinion!

I did manage to finish one test-subject for my colorscheme. Please let me know what you guys think!

Thanks guys, I really appreciate any kind of comment if it will help me improving the figure.

@ Beef: I started out with a white basecoat, applied one coat of Hammerfall Khaki (p3 paint), then washed it with Devlan Mud and Badab Black for the darker recesses. Afterwards I highlighted it with Skull White.

@ Wulfebane: The grey is simply achieved by using Badab Black over a white basecoat. I painted a few parts of the mini with Chainmail though before applying the wash (top of the baskpack, lower part of the gun and a few small details)

@ LoneWulfen: I got a sealed pack trough internet. A guy on a Dutch forum I visit/post found it with some other GW stuff at a small model-shop. I paid only 23 euro's for it -_-
