Went to a really fun tournament this weekend and came in 7th out of 20. Each table had its own scenario, so that was pretty cool.

My list:

Grandmaster - blind/rad/psychotroke grenades, meltabombs, master crafted sword

Ordo Xenos Inquisitor - power armor, needle pistol, venom talon, rad/psychotroke grenades, 3 servo-skulls

Techmarine - storm bolter, blind/rad/psychotroke grenades

Vindicare

Paladin - master crafted sword

5 GKT - incinerator, 3 halberds, hammer

5 GKSS - psycannon, 4 halberds

Razorback - twin-linked assault cannon, psybolts, dozer blade

5 GKSS - psycannon, 4 halberds

Razorback - twin-linked assault cannon, psybolts, dozer blade

Storm Raven - lascannon, multi-melta

Game 1 vs Chaos Space Marines

Abaddon

Daemon Prince - mark of slaanesh, lash of submission, wings

5 Chaos marines - meltagun, Iocg

Rhino

5 Chaos marines - meltagun, Iocg

Rhino

5 Plague marines - 2 meltaguns, icon

Rhino

5 Berzerkers - powerfist, icon

Rhino

2 Obliterators

2 Obliterators

2 Obliterators

This scenario had 7 objectives to capture (you can pick them up and move them around) as the primary, kill more troops as the secondary, and just KP as tertiary. Dawn of War deployment, he got the first turn.

Honestly there isn't much to say about this game. On the 2nd turn when things started shooting, the storm raven made all four cover saves for the penetrating hit, allowing just a single glancing hit through which was promptly ignored. After that, all his shooting missed. The raven only took maybe, 3-4 more hits all game. It saved half of them, and the rest didn't penetrate. He lashed one of my squads, after which a unit of plasma cannons attempted to plasma cannon them. They both overheated. My psy-missiles hurt the daemon prince, after which it boxed its psychic test and died. The terminators slaughtered two units of obliterators, and Abaddon charged in to teach them a lessen...rolled a one, and got sliced up.

Basically, his dice were absolutely horrible and his army just laid down and died. I scored all the objectives and points, putting me on top of the list at the moment. Sweet.

Game 2 vs Grey Knights (the future tournament winner)

Naturally he didn't have a typed list to give and some of his models were SW, so there was a great amount of trust...egh. There's always one! Still, roughly he had:

Coteaz

Librarian - shrouding

5 Purifiers

Razorback - psybolts

Techmarine

Henchmen - 6 deathcult assassins, 3 crusaders, maybe other stuff

Chimera

Henchmen - stuff

Razorback - lascannon

Storm Raven - lascannon, multi-melta

Dreadnought - autocannons, psybolts

Dreadnought - autocannons, psybolts

Dreadnought - autocannons, psybolts

This game was have the most scoring units within 6" of the center of the table by the end. The others were killy objectives, and it was a Pitched Battle deployment.

I was able to deploy my two razorbacks behind a solid wall of a ruin, along with the sniper getting his 2+ cover save.

The first few turns consisted of maneuvering to get a better shot, as well as the vindicare failing the first cover save he needed to make against those autocannons. Blegh. Otherwise, the rest of the game was rather average except for a couple key jammy rolls on his part. Near the end of the game I needed to make a gamble to win: I need to force his army out of its transports so I could assault it with my army. He kept rolling 6's for his 6+ cover save for his transports...argh! Gamble failed, he then got out and assaulted me, obviously wiping me out due to being at I1. I lost, gave him all points. Lost to crazy dice...sigh!

Game 3 vs Dark Eldar

Duke Sliscus

Baron Sathonyx

3 Trueborn - 2 blasters

Venom - flickerfield

3 Trueborn - 2 blasters

Venom - flickerfield

5 Warriors - blaster

Venom - flickerfield

5 Warriors - blaster

Venom - flickerfield

5 Warriors - blaster

Venom - flickerfield

5 Warriors - blaster

Venom - flickerfield

5 Wyches - shardnet, impaler, agonizer

Raider - flickerfield

20 Warriors - 2 splinter cannons

Ravager

Ravager

This was an interesting scenario, where there's a Baneblade on the table that can be captured and used. The objectives were to get most troops into the enemy deployment zone as the primary, kill the enemy's most expensive unit as secondary, and KP as tertiary. You roll a D6 and see what happens...the higher the better. I got the 2nd turn (like all the other games) and he got to it first with his witches. They captured it and rolled a 1...it was booby trapped and explodes! 4 wyches died and the raider exploded in the violence...off to a good start methinks! Otherwise, as was expected the razorbacks tore vehicles out of the sky before they were wrecked, the storm raven delivered its terminator cargo again, and otherwise everything went as planned (though my opponent's dice weren't so sucky). By the end of the game he had only two venoms and three squads left alive...once again full points to me.

So, some things worked, some didn't. I definitely learned that GK need to be assaulted, mindstrike missiles hurt my poor vehicles, and MSU armies die to GK.

Wow. First game, opponent has terrible dice. Second game, opponent has great dice. Third game, opponent has average dice. What a way for things to even out, eh?

Regardless, congrats on the outcome. 2-1 is a solid record! :tu:

Most interesting to me is that second game; the first and third seem like mulligans even though the third was likely due to you outplaying your opponent. The maneuvering phase of the second game is where its at. Reminds me of some of the wars around the Renaissance years, where formations of pikemen would maneuver around each other and one side would give up when it was outmanevered, rather than go through with the slaughter at the end. Any chance we could get a bit more detail on #2?

Game 2 details:

Set-up: Pitched Battle, single objective in the center of the table. Terrain was relatively absent in the center, but mostly LOS blocking in a circle 12" around it. I deployed the two razorbacks behind a single wall, along with the sniper. He had spread out his dreadnoughts, while having all the transports clustered up for cover on the left. The storm raven was a little further on the left.

Turn 1:

The storm raven skipped a bit further left to try and peg a razorback on the side, while the transport blob moved up 6". The only two shots were from the first dreadnought into the vindicare and the storm raven into a razorback. I made 2/3 cover saves for the assassin and it died (arg insta-gibbing), while the razor made its cover to the front (he hadn't moved far enough).

On my turn, I rotated the razorback so he wouldn't get a side shot (and hence no cover). Not being able to see anything since the assassin died, I passed the turn.

Turn 2:

Same thing happened, except I made all my cover this time.

My turn, nothing arrived from reserves. The assault cannon was close enough to let off a few at the raven, shaking it.

Turn 3:

His raven fortituded and moved to the right of the objective. It exploded the inquisitor's razorback, killing three marines (ugh).

On my turn, both my storm raven and paladin came in, the raven shooting up next to his and the paladin to the left. I decided to rush the objective this turn, as his units were camped on it. I planned for next turn to crack them and kill the occupants. My psycannon sitting outside took a pot shot at his raven but failed. The raven exploded the closest dreadnought at least...yay!

Turn 4:

He got even closer with stuff and tried to wreck vehicles but failed (hooray for cover saves!). He did immobilize my raven though; not really a bummer but I lost mobility.

I disembarked all my units in anticipation of an assault; this is where my gamble started but subsequently failed. Everything surrounded and tried to crack his transports...and he rolled 2-3 6+ cover saves on penetrating hits to save his vehicles...arg! Despite assaulting all his stuff, I only missed the raven and shook/immobilized a razorback. Double arg!!! I knew what was coming next turn.

Turn 5:

I got assaulted and died.

Yea, it really could have gone either way. As it turned out, his dice wanted it to go his way far more than mine did :P.

The game reminded me a lot of a BFG game I played a few years ago at Adepticon. My marine fleet hid behind terrain until the last turn or two where it struck hard and won. The enemy fleet was all nova cannon Imperials, and my plan worked then, just not this time. Ah well!

Overall the game took about 50 minutes, and that included about 5 minutes of rule searching when I got confused and we couldn't find what we were looking for. He played against the other GK player in the 3rd round and they finished so fast (like my game) that they actually got in a second full game just for funsies, making it two 1500 pt games in 1.5 hours...crazy!
