Emperor’s Gift

The second thing I thought might be worth mentioning is that the cover art for The Emperor’s Gift was on show at Games Day, in the form of a massive poster. A photo of it is now doing the rounds on various forums, natch. Here it is, just for kicks:

I like it a lot, though not with the unashamed love I have for most of my covers. Part of my reservations are simple enough: Jon Sullivan’s Night Lords covers (especially Void Stalker) are practically unbeatable, and Neil Roberts’ Heresy covers are super, super, super lush. When you have those two guys doing your covers, anyone else has a lot to live up to.

That said, it rocks on toast. It’s by Cheoljoo Lee, who does a lot of 40K artwork for various major deals (like Dawn of War II), and did the beautiful Salamanders series covers to boot. For the record, Hyperion isn’t a Justicar. The tilt plate on his shoulder is artistic license.

I was asked a lot on Sunday whether The Emperor’s Gift was going to lead into a series. The popular plan was for it to be a trilogy or a duology, and we’d see where it led on from there. Due to various reasons, the novel’s ending up longer than expected, and about way more than was planned in the first volume. I’m not sure where I stand on the score of doing more after it – I have a lot of love for the Grey Knights, but they changed drastically in their latest iteration of the codex, and a lot of what I’d planned ended up vanishing into the void with the old lore. It’s not a huge deal, but for now I’m keeping The Emperor’s Gift as a single (big…) novel, with a “we’ll see how it goes” feel for the future.

Loved how A-D-B acknowledge the fact that, with the new Codex, much of the old lore just doesn't fit anymore. I'm interested though in how he worked around (or within) the new paradigm set by Ward for the boys in silver.

Also, is that a Warding Staff I see?

...and a personal teleporter too. Overall the picture seems pretty generic and forgettable imo. Probably spoilt for quality after the recent Primarch parade release.

Hopefully ADB won't have chopped off everything from the older material as not all of it was necessarily contradictory or a retcon. Still, at least I'm thankful Hyperion won't be a Justicar. GK fans seem to have a weird fascination with the PAGK leaders, and after the drudgery of the Alaric trilogy it would be good to get perspective from a different part of the chapter's hierarchy.

This is probably the book that ADB told me was going to have a Grey Knight hero named Valerian as a protagonist, until the codex was released with Inquisitor Valeria as one of the named characters. He had to go back and change the name as it was too similar.

Dammit!

It would be lovely to have some BL material on the GKs not written by the execrable Ben Counter. ;)

Dang No.6, that's not the first stinging comment of yours that I've read regarding Ben Counter recently. Seems like the guy gets on your goad as much as Matt Ward does with the majority of the fanbase!

:)

EDIT - Grammar.

Dang No.6, that's not the first stinging comment to a Ben Counter related topic I've read remember recently. Seems like the guy gets on your goad as much as Matt Ward does to the majority of the fanbase!

:P

True enough.

As a lit/writing major, I have a special loathing for (what I believe to be) terribad writing that is actually presented as and intended to be consumed as "literature". Even popular/genre fiction must pass a certain minimal muster for me.

I admit to being snobbish for beer and my reading material....

Whatever else one might say about Mat Ward, I am eternally grateful he hasn't been tapped to write pure entertainment fiction. I am willing to parse his codex fluff. :D

The moment I read this, I immediately thought of R.A. Salvatore. He is the reason I am super, super, super picky about books I choose to read; especially those related to game fluff. Ward is our own Salvatore.

Salvatore's not so bad...when you're 14. Maybe that's the problem with Ward, I'm not 14 anymore...

If you look back in ADBs blog there's some preview stuff about the book. At that point he was writing it in the first person a la Eisenhorn which must be a real challenge.

man, I went from not reading very much in the past few years to now being almost done with Legion, and I want to finish the HH. I have started the first GK book, and am reading the GK and SW codex, plus I have a life. I wish I didn't need sleep, but then again I'm working on lucid dreaming, and I could be a Grey Kinght!
