Ok I was getting a bunch of stuff painted and realized that I forgot to put my basing material on before got everything primed and painted. I know uber fail. Anyway I need some suggestions on how to fix this debacle. Only thing I can thing of at this point is to wrap the models in tape, spray the bases that now have sand on them and then touch up the legs and feet afterward. If anyone can suggest anything better please let me know.

That is not a noob mistake, I would consider my self an experienced painter and I never base my mini's before painting them, basing is the last thing that I do. Assuming you have your sand or basing material glue to the base, just thin down some paint, what ever color you want your base to be, and then add coats of paint until it is the shade you are looking for, the thin paint will help with coverage.

I would recommend not spray painting the bases of already painted figures. There is no way you could mask them properly. Seems like a lot of extra work that could be alleviated by hand painting the bases.
This.

Most people just use flat painted bases with a thin coating of turf flock or GW modelling sand, and either way they glue the sand/flock down after the figure is painted.

^- this, water down your paint and do a few layers. Then you can always (carefully) drybrush afterwards when you've achieved good coverage.

I never base my minis before painting & I've been playing this game for like 15 years now. I usually do 1 of 2 things when basing: 1 I use a glue that is kinda stretchy so I can remove the model after painting & sealing or 2 I simply glue & flock around the model which is easy enough to achieve. Yes, it CAN look like the model is "sinking" but I think if it's a thin layer it doesn't have that too much more than something as heavy as a space marine would look standing in loose footing, heavy as they are.
