Salamanders Army - a long time coming

Yale

Recommended Posts

Hi Bolter and Chainsword,

I've been a marine player since I took the plunge and bought the 2nd edition boxed set back in 1994. My first army was the Dark Angels and as much as I loved them my painting was well.... pretty poor. In 2000 it was time to start a new marine army as my Dark Angels disappeared in a house burglary and after a brief flirt with Blood Drinkers I decided I really did love painting green and started a Salamander army.

I'm a slow painter at best and like many of us, I suffer from hobby ADD. Friends and members of B&C have been pestering me to post my marines up here. I've stuffed around until I had enough to post up that I wasn't ashamed of. :P So here you go:

Tactical Squad 1 with their rhino.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk193/XingJun_album/Marines/TactialSquad12.jpg

The models of this squad are a mixture of metals and plastics from 1st to 3rd ed.

Tactical Squad 2 and their ride.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk193/XingJun_album/Marines/TactialSquad22.jpg

These guys are a bit more modern with all but the sergeant (and old lieutenant model) and are mostly 3rd edition pastics and hybrids.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk193/XingJun_album/Marines/Razorback.jpg

The razorback sometimes replaces the rhino for Squad 2 in game. I thought I was pretty clever using a spare landraider hatch and heavy bolters but then the current model came out and stole my thunder. :)

A full squad of 10 scouts. A mixture of metal models from late 2nd edition and some of the modern plastics. The sergeant is conversion based on one of the metals.

I figure since the Salamander gene-seed turns their skin black and eyes red then the native Nocturieans must have started out with 'normal' skin colours. So I had fun painting them in all different skin tones.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk193/XingJun_album/Marines/Scouts33.jpg

A close up of the scout details. The camouflage is a little lot in the photos but I reckon the free-hand squad and company markings turned out well enough.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk193/XingJun_album/Marines/Terminators4.jpg

Terminators! All old metals and 3rd ed plastics. Some of the nice modern plastic parts have been used to try and jazz them up a little.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk193/XingJun_album/Marines/Landraider1.jpg

Landraider for the terminators to ride around in.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk193/XingJun_album/Marines/Landraider2.jpg

And the other side.

Since this was the first landraider I ever finished I got a bit carried away... I painted a crude mural on the inside and once I put the roof on I realised that you really can't see the inside of the damned thing due to lack of light. I won't spend anywhere near as much time in the inside of the next ones.

Time for the support units.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk193/XingJun_album/Marines/Dreadnought1.jpg

I can't really explain the weapons on the dreadnought other than I thought they'd look cool. In hindsight the plasma cannon wasn't the best choice.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk193/XingJun_album/Marines/Dreadnought2.jpg

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk193/XingJun_album/Marines/Attackbikes1-1.jpg

Metal-plastic hybrid attack bikes. I painted them as a detachment from the 5th (Reserve) Company hence the black on yellow shoulder pads rather than the white on black of the 2nd and 1st Companies.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk193/XingJun_album/Marines/Attackbikes2.jpg

The bases were an essential addition as the heavy lead side cars kept breaking and falling off. I had fun making the odd sized bases and adding in the tyre tracks to the mud.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk193/XingJun_album/Marines/Landspeeder11.jpg

I know this landspeeder model is looking a bit tired now. But I figure since I've been playing games with it for so long, I've come to love it.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk193/XingJun_album/Marines/Landspeeder12.jpg

The banner pole is long since lost and the only modification I've made to it is swapping the old multi-melta for a soriatias heavy flamer.

With the current codex a new character the Forgefather became all but essential if I wanted to play my Salamanders as Salamanders. So here is my conversion. I've updated it with the backpack from a damned legionnaire recently and only just finished painting it in the last few days.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk193/XingJun_album/Marines/Vulkan1.jpg

That takes me to a playable 1500 points or so. Yay! And since this is going to be a WIP thread my next step is to finish a squad of assault marines and a squad of devastators.

What do you think?

Good to see some old mixed in with the new. I'm working on one of those speeders too and I understand how you can get attached to it. I've grown to love mine even though it exploded spectacularly in every single game. Your painting is really clean and everything looks great!

yeah, i'm not one to post often on wip logs but

1) love the mixing in of the RT models

2)love the painted over sallie's decal on the rhino

3) your LRGH interior get's a :P FTW award

4) Love the use of the Chaos dread weapon systems and placement of the heavy flamer: always felt that plasma was more like dragon fire than melta weapons due to "gets hot" USR

4)your scouts are sublime, the way scouts should be

and lastly

5) "Friends and members of B&C have been pestering me to post my marines up here." they were right all along.

good work sIr and thank you for sharing.

As a Marines Malevolent player, it's very hard for me to say this, but...

Beautiful job on these Sallies. The classic mini's are a very nice touch, and well done to boot. Looking forward to seeing some more! (grumble grumble)

wow Yale, they look the bomb here :)

I love how you did the front of the old-school rhino. The way you painted that makes it look as if there's some etching on it, it looks amazing!

also, nice pose on the assault marine. Although my wife would disagree...

And I really like how your scouts turned out :)

Thanks Brother Fatiswon. The B&C member who talked me into it was Vonny. I think her Lamenters are brilliant and I was a little daunted.

(edit) I see vonny just popped in to comment. Thanks mate!

And thanks to everyone who digs the old models as much as I do. I started out keeping my old models 'cos I was cheep, :) but I realised I loved them too much to get rid of or leave them on the shelf. So I hoped a consistent paint scheme and a little base bulking to bring the 25mm scale marines to something closer to the 28mm Citadel moved to.

^^ahahahah..most epic pose ever...I am definitely making me one!

Go for it! The orks have a little flat spot on the heel that glues to the base strongly without any conversion, and the whole thing balances pretty well for the height.

Very cool I just don't think the sals land raider would have a mural of a cool summer day on the plains of world X need some fire and lava in there.

Other then that they look great.

That is a completely fair criticism mate. I bought a lot of landraiders and had the idea of doing a different landscape of places the Sallies had fought* in each. And was going to save the broken lava fields of Nocturne for the Landraider Promethus as it is both a command tank and the Sallies own variant design. (Now the Redeemer exists I might rethink that a bit....)

*Buggered if I know where the rolling green verdant hills are meant to be, but surely the Sallies have been somewhere nice in the last 10,000 years!

Just curious about a bit you used; squad 2, first picture marine on the farthest left running. Are they just standard assault marine legs only tilted a bit, or is it another bit? I love the pose of that model.

(Everything looks amazing btw, Always awesome to see different editions mixed in together, especially along really crisp freehand)

The mural of the Land raider is nice, but for whatever reason, I think it feels REALLY out of place. For whatever reason, it reminds me of common areas at prisons I used to work at. Only thing it lacks are inspirational messages. Still. Everything looks good and the assault marine pose is pretty rawrsome.

Dude, I'd pay cash to see someone put a poster of a kitten hanging from a wire, with the caption "Hang in there" on the inside of a Land Raider... ;)

Heh, I didn't think anyone would get the gag. I've spent way too much time in hospitals in recent years and I figured if I had to suffer through roughly painted landscapes that were supposed to cheer me up, my boys in green could suffer too.

That is awesome! I've been stuck for how to finish the inside of my landraider crusader. B) I've been thinking of incongruous names for the 'raiders. so far I've got Tranquil Horizons for the phobos and Calm Reflection for the crusader.

Hi InFlames,

The running legs are just a mash up and re-pose of standard tactical marine legs. They were left over from making the prone marine shooting around the bush. From memory I think I cut them along the line of the hip joint.
