Salamanders Army - a long time coming

Hail brothers,

My 'everything' dreadnought is 90% done. It still needs a few minor details and most importantly a name and the chapter and promethean cult markings.

Decked out with multi-melta and storm bolter:

Long range support with autocannons and missile launcher:

Everybodies favourite 'rifleman' configuration:

Inronclad. Since I had cut the lascannons off for some other conversion I made a seismic hammer out of the left over bits and a Warmachine thingo.

Any suggestions for a heroic name for this guy? And suggestions how and where I should paint on the promethean cult markings and the chapter symbol?

ok, name suggestions: nox. Xivi. Oxiir (I have a thing for x's tonight it seems). Raama (to break that chain)

As for the cult markings, I'm often a fan of seeing them on the shin guards. You could also still paint them on the dread's shoulders themselves, I think. (edit: I do realize this means you need to paint flames on every single arm... which might be a lot of work)

Other than that: looking very sweet. Very nice and seemless work there, wouldn't know you had exchanged anything!

Thanks Vonny. I used the name Rama in the end.

Now finished the ironclad arms with the magnatised hunter-killer missiles.

Got motivated and painted up my third tactical squad. (The photos a little blurry on the details but you get the idea.)

And I was on such a roll that I got a fair way through a squad of RBT1 devastators. So here is WIP shot.

you have a really varied amount of models there, some i can see from when i just started getting into 40k.

i always like seeing salamanders painted with an african skin tone, never been a fan of just pure black and red eyes looks odd despite them supposed to have a demonic look to them.

Very, very nice!

Couple of questions (both painting related) how do you paint the flames and how do you do skin tones? Ive been putting off painting my sallies because i dont know how to paint the skin properly :/

Love your dreadnoughts :D

DarkAngelDelight - I agree. I like the background idea of the demonic looking Salamanders, but in practice it is so hard to get any character into such an unnatural skin tone and eyes without relatable pupils. I figure some of these are the models that got me into the hobby and they deserve some painting love and game time too.

atryu88 - Thanks! On the bright side dark skin is really easy to do (much easier to do well than Caucasian skin tones). I use the old Citadel Dark Flesh (but any dark, warm brown colour will do if you water it down) as it is vibrant in colour but pretty transparent like many of the old paints. Undercoat black, and give it a once over with dark flesh. And then just build up twice more on the raise areas of the skin. The paint is its own shade and own highlight as each layer transitions from the near black base to the true brown of the dark flesh. So easy. :D

  1. The flames are more involved though.
  2. Do rough flame shape with foundation white
  3. Go over the foundation white with a foundation yellow
  4. Go over the foundation yellow with a pale cool yellow
  5. Work tiny bits of orange around the edges (don't worry about being overly neat)
  6. If you need a better transition from the pale yellow to the orange dot some warm yellow around the transitions
  7. Now paint the negative space around the flames with black (if painting on black shoulder pads) leaving only a tiny amount of the orange exposed. That gives a neat outline to the flames.

For all that you also need to keep you paints really thin so as not to bulk up the shoulder pads. And if all that sounds like daunting work there is nothing wrong with using those new citadel transfers (they look like they might be pretty decent.) Does that help?

Some more work done on the devastators and extra details added to a few members of the tactical squad (who I could of sworn were finished!).

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk193/XingJun_album/Marines/Tacsqd3sgt.jpg Extra detail on banner and nicer green.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk193/XingJun_album/Marines/Multimelta1.jpg More blood on face to make the bandage look less like a do-rag.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk193/XingJun_album/Marines/PartofDevsqd12.jpg The 6 bolter slingers (and possible ablative wounds) for the devastator squad. The missile launchers are proving tedious.

And I found myself in a bit of a green painting frenzy this morning. So here is my WIP pile.

6th edition has kept me distracted with playing more games (I'm enjoying playing a lot more) and other armies. But it is long since time I returned to the Emperor's service and I have some works in progress to share. happy.png

Some WIP de-dark angeled dark angels from the Dark Vengance set.

WIP Landraider crusader. The first lot of highlights are almost done but I haven't started any of the detail work yet.

And getting in the zooming around spirit, a WIP storm talon. (I'm working up the courage to paint the green struts on the canopy.)

Lovely Sallies ^_^

Regarding the canopy struts, perhaps some masking tape marking them out might help when you paint them?  I haven't tried it myself, but it's something I'm thinking of trying on mine when I get the courage to paint it!

Thanks guys. Aquilanus, I'll try that out. At the advice from a friend I'm going to paint the struts in black first so that they will have the same base colour as the rest of it.

Brother Anvilus, I've taken a close up for you. (I was reluctant to do that at first as the close up photos of it aren't kind. They show up all the flaws I try and draw attention away from!)

I actually managed to get a model finished. Unfortunately it wasn't any of the above ones.... ermm.gif I love this old whirlwind model. The only conversion to it was replacing the exhaust tops to something less breakable and matching the forgeworld Mk2 conversion kits.
I thought I'd like to try ot a more dramtic freehand and have a go at the racing stripes that forgeworld is so fond of.
