You'll struggle with this idea as it simply doesnt work for a chapter of marines - you've limited them far far too much. Need a marine chapter for an orbital drop into an Ork Waagh - oh, sorry, no assault marines. Tyranid Swarm threatening to take your planet - sorry, we like lascannons, and you've got no takns for us to hunt.

Specialising in one area is a bit meh, but ok - specialising to the copmlete detriment of something else is too much.

But good luck

Plenty. Its more than GW has done for about 900 chapters - so you're one up there.

Just start again at the top, and we go from there:

You want a chapter thats devastator-heavy and likes big guns? Thats do-able...

You want a chapter that prefers not using jump-pack assault troops? Then they tend to do mechanised forces...

etc....

Yeah, I'm scrapping it. I can't make my own chapter. All I can ever manage is a colour scheme, and what damn good is that.

Gah! Don't give up and never say you "can't". Just because an idea may not seem right now doesn't mean it can't work at all. You just need to work at it!

That's the problem, I have ideas that are never able to work. Every time I have tried to do a DiY chapter, there's always something that's completely stupid that wrecks the whole thing, and the more I work at it to make it better, the worse off it becomes. I need to realize that I need to just stick with my chapters that already have fluff.

*sighs* Maybe it's just because I'm having an absolute  day...I don't know why I'm feeling so defeatist about this.

Hmm. Maybe I can suggest an approach that might help. Perhaps you should try to make a very normal chapter first, making them as bland and vanilla as possible while fitting the WH40K universe. Research what a normal chapter does, how they operate, etc. Once you have a firm grasp of all things 'nilla Astartes you can spice up some parts about the chapter's culture and values. These are the "ooh/aah" factors, which are not necessarily WHAT they do, but HOW and WHY they do it that way. Then, with your massively epic knowledge of marines, you can decide whether your epic sugar, spice, and everything not so nice is ridiculous or not.

Also for the "spice" of your chapter, nail down what defines them in 1 short sentence then stick with that exact theme throughout your IA. For example, the Ultramarines are rigidly, by the book, disciplined greco-roman-esk tacticians. Their IA smacks you in the face with those basic aspects.

Well, at least it's the weekend  Have a beer!

Edit: blasted grammar

That's what I tend to do for the most part, somewhere in there though something comes up that at first seems like it fits, but ends up ridiculous. Believe me, I have a huge collection of books, codices, and the first two Index Astartes books and go over them a lot and research. Just somehow I take my ideas and they lose something between what I know, and what I'm aiming for. If I ever decide to try my Wraiths of Karaxis again, I'll try and apply that more.

*chuckles* Sadly out of beer, couple shots of vodka make for a good alternative though :)
