on painting, first i did a grey grey sheme since i disliked the baby icy blue. but this involved a lot of mixing to get the right shade of grey and i never managed to get it exactly the same.so i went with a more icy blue. then GW started with fenris grey foundation paint(or is it space wolf blue?)anyway, that's been my colour ever since

for many years i tried to match gw designs as close as i could ,then i just figured that i could do my own thing and evloved into all manor of details and stuffs i find the old rt rule book art and the prospero burns poster to be awsome infact id say that thousand sons/prospero and battle of the fan have taken my insperation to new hights not seen here aboust for 20 or so years ,i also find the figures them selves speak to me (in terms of painting not that im crazy ..i think)

i enjoy the psudo viking stuff but they arnt from scandinavia there from fenris so i enjoy a bit of sci fantasy as well as pure leathers and bone etc

Nothing against you LakotaWolf, but I hate it when people stereotypically typecast Space Wolves as "Space Vikings" sure they're made out to be viewed at as vikings in space, but to me they are more barbarian than "viking" It's like typecasting SW with heavy metal, sure it works for most people but not for every SW player out there. To truly understand SW you have to know your fluff, it's origins to the rebooted stuff. I have to laugh at myself when I read about certain people who've built SW armies and end up being unhappy with them, selling them several times. I ask myself why? I think it's because they don't truly know what and who SW's are as a whole. If your going to make a SW army, follow through with it and know what you want. Take your time with it, and do it right. Why go through three SW armies only to be discontent with how they look and feel? Anyway, my influences in painting and style comes from many things... like most people, I started painting and playing wolves around Rouge Trader days, with the ice blue color scheme. My entire army was painted like that... UNTIL, 13th company came out around 3rd/4th edition. I saw the raw and gritty feel to them, and loved them! I slowly started repainting my army into a pre-heresy scheme. But what truly motivated and influenced my army is Dan Abnett's Vlka Fenryka, from Prospero Burns. For me, it felt like graduating and ascending to another level of understanding, learning the true nature of the Sons of Russ and taking it from there. My army is raw, primal and savage. They look grim and dark, they look barbaric yet noble. The true, trusted weapons of the Vlka Fenryka were their primary resource.

"We are not feral savages. It’s just that two centuries of doing things that other Legions find distasteful have earned us that reputation. The other Legions think we are untamed, untrained dogs, but the truth is that we are the most harshly trained of all." - Prospero Burns

I started back in 3rd Edition about the time that particular Space Wolves codex was released. Those particular models I painted Shadow Grey like GW was plugging at the time. Recently, I've moved to a "grey grey" largely due to the fact that I've acquired an airbrush and finding a decent match for Shadow Grey in craft paints is next to impossible.

Also, the cover art for "Battle of the Fang" is awesome so that played a part in the decision too

personally i have sold my first space wolves army..........not because i disliked my army but because in a years time my painting skills have grown by leaps and bounds....answer me this......you liken them to Barbarians.......do you realize the Norse have ties in bloodlines all over the Baltic, Cyrillic, And Celtic regions. All these areas the natives dealt heavily in battling Barbarians...........these Barbarians were Norse

just because you liken them to the Viking influence that was made by Games Workshop.....doesnt mean that when you paint them they look like a caricature of a viking.....mine too are dark........Black armor.....Shadow Grey Shoulder pads.....and a gold paint i found, called Sahara Gold that has a very muted tone to it, as the trim

wether you want to call them Vikings or Barbarians they truly have that look

LMAO you do realize, when I mentioned barbarian, I was referring more of the definition of a "barbarian" :) as in the primal warriors on Fenris, depicted on Prospero Burns right? :)

barbarian [bɑːˈbɛərɪən]

n

1. (Social Science / Anthropology & Ethnology) a member of a primitive or uncivilized people

2. a coarse, insensitive, or uncultured person

3. a vicious person

adj

1. of an uncivilized culture

2. insensitive, uncultured, or brutal

MaveriK........what can i say other than do you not see the obvious that the space wolves as well as almost every army in 40k and fantasy are based off History

so then what is wrong when painting and designing your army to pull upon that

yes, I can see the obvious. But can you read the obvious also? Anyway, you say that you are truly making "Space Vikings".......just like the vikings influenced the world or they were influenced buy other cultures you can see some elements of Celtic, Baltic and Cyrillic. So where did the black paint scheme from? why black? and what makes the black "Space Vikings" to you? wether you or I want to call them Vikings or Barbarians how does the black truly express that in your army?

I was referring more of the definition of a "barbarian" <_< as in the primal warriors on fenris.........wether you want to call them BARBARIANS.....VIKINGS......FENRISIANS........Fenris in 40K was based off the Vikings.....do a little research.....its not hard.......read below for the definition of Fenrir

In Norse mythology, Fenrir (Old Norse: "fen-dweller"),[1] Fenrisúlfr (Old Norse: "Fenris wolf"),[2] Hróðvitnir (Old Norse: "fame-wolf"),[3] or Vánagandr (Old Norse: "the monster of the river Ván")[4] is a monstrous wolf. Fenrir is attested in the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and the Prose Edda and Heimskringla, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson. In both the Poetic Edda and Prose Edda, Fenrir is the father of the wolves Sköll and Hati Hróðvitnisson, is a son of Loki, and is foretold to kill the god Odin during the events of Ragnarök, but will in turn be killed by Odin's son Víðarr.

also this comes from the Lexicanum

Fenris is the homeworld of the Space Marines legion Space Wolves and their Primarch Leman Russ. Fenris gets its name from the viking mythology´s fenris wolf son of loki. This relates to the Space Wolves themselves and most of the names of locations on Fenris are also Viking related.

you can have your opinion that your army has nothing to do with Vikings.......but its very funny you say that but the creators of the game obviously say differently

but back to the question at hand from the beginning.............when you are painting and designing your army......what influences you

the black in my paint scheme like the other colors are all earthy colors.....dark muted.....shadow grey is more of a slate blue.....the gold i use more is not bright but more understated......if i painted the whole armor shadow grey yeah they would look nice but by instead using it as an accent color it makes them more dark and ferocious
LMAO I'm amused, thank you. This was far too easy, blame the bored psychologist in me late at night. Oh and thank you for the brief history lesson <_<

maybe if you are a bored you need a new hobby......it makes me laugh people like you must have so little in their life that they have to come into message boards and chat rooms and try and start arguements by picking at every word someone types.....maybe someday you will grow up

you call it argument, I say it was a discussion. TBH I didn't go on this thread to start anything. I merely posted my own personal opinion. What I didn't expect was a history lesson and a fluff revision that I already knew. From there I just played with it <_< but assuming things about a person that you know nothing about is pretty childish coming from someone who is telling me to grow up LMAO.

MaveriK.....the title to the thread was "Whats Your Influences"...........first couple came on and stated what they liked and how they painted their army.......then we have you......first comment i hate the term space vikings, 2nd comment was on how people dont know what they want and sell their army, then you finally answered the question but you already started it off arguementative.........dont tell me you were not looking to start trouble

LMAO I love the fact that you omitted and failed to mention that I did answer what my influences were. I also like how you failed to miss the fact that I said "nothing against you" and the fact that I said "i" as in me, myself and I in those comments you mentioned above, and they were in no way directed at YOU personally. Yet you then go on to correct me with a history lesson, on my personal opinions even though I was referring to the term barbarian as a whole and definition <_<

My influences span nearly 25 years of 40K, but always Space Wolves. I still think of the "real" homeworld as being Lucan <_<

My painting style is as clean and crisp as I can make it. I think the "gritty dark" paint schemes tend (not always but there is a tendancy) to be excuses for not painting things properly, a black wash over dark grey isn't gritty to me, it's lazy. I like to stick to what the Eavy metal team are alleged to call "special grey" a half half shadow/space wolves grey mix that I shade and highlight accordingly.

Dan Abnett's vision of the Space Wolves is just one transient interpretation of the chapter, the most detailed, yes, but not the definitive one, that honour falls to the models in whatever version of the codex is the most current.

maveriK......read again i did notate that the third thing you said was the answer to my question............you only see what you want to see

LMAO I wrote it to prove a point, and you've made it. The fact that you keep going on about this is silly, it was amusing at first but now it's just pointless. You say that my original comment in the beginning was argumentative, yet you fail to see that it wasn't my intent or reasoning.
