MaveriK
personally i have sold my first space wolves army..........not because i disliked my army but because in a years time my painting skills have grown by leaps and bounds mine too are dark........Black armor.....Shadow Grey Shoulder pads.....and a gold paint i found, called Sahara Gold that has a very muted tone to it, as the trim personally for me i am truly making "Space Vikings".......just like the vikings influenced the world or they were influenced buy other cultures you can see some elements of Celtic, Baltic and Cyrillic. the black in my paint scheme like the other colors are all earthy colors.....dark muted.....shadow grey is more of a slate blue.....the gold i use more is not bright but more understated......if i painted the whole armor shadow grey yeah they would look nice but by instead using it as an accent color it makes them more dark and ferocious i spend roughly two hours per mini.....alot of drybrushing and washes IMHO, your pictures above (not shown no hot-linking) look bland and the skin tone looks pasty. Roughly two hours per mini? with dry brushing and washes? there isn't enough brown on the fur, or proper grey tones for the wolf pelts, and the skin needs a proper wash like Ogryn Flesh. The weapons don't need to be the same color as the entire model... it makes the models looks plain, and don't make them more dark or ferocious, they don't do your vision/idea of "Space Vikings" any justice. Wulfebane
I prefer my wolves icy, with greys on the cooler and whiter side of the spectrum, as though they just walked out of the mists surrounding the snow-capped mountain peaks of Asaheim. To the now 2nd (and more dominant) half of this topic... I hate it when mom and dad fight. @Mav, you started it. If I were to say "No offense, but your painting sucks and you smell" does it make it any less personal that I said 'no offense'? As SW players, it's highly likely we're already defensive alpha-type males. It'd be silly to not expect a rebuttal to form. Oh.. and it was pointless from the beginning. Not sure exactly where the humor was. @LakotaWolf, I do somewhat agree with some of what Mav's saying. I don't see why black makes it more Viking than Mayan or French or Japanese. Black is a shade. As to the gold, I would think a bronze would suit better since Vikings were predominant in the Iron Age, but being moreso scavengers, their own metallurgical forges were perhaps less elaborate for iron as bronze was more plentiful (I could be wrong). Barbarians or Vikings.. semantics. I prefer to think of them as wolves. Feral, silent, killers with a pack mentality. Historical, strategic military tactics were gained by studying wolf hunting packs. Essentially, that's where Native Americans developed their hit-and-run, divide and conquer, and corralling tactics. I've never subscribed to the ale-guzzling, brawling-for-fun neanderthals that is basically what has been branded for fantasy dwarves. I much prefer Abnett's version of them as the Vlka Fenryka. Now be honest.. did either of you truly LMAO? I think one full page of bickering is enough. I'd rather have someone actually help me grow as a hobbyist than have people around me to be my "yes man" giving me a narrow-minded view of the bigger picture. OHH I failed to forget... this is the INTERNET right? where people are free to express their personal opinions, like I did? Now be honest.. did either of you truly LMAO? I think one full page of bickering is enough. TBH I did :) and I agreed it was enough awhile back :D --EDIT-- all good. no more fishing for me today. LakotaWolf
Wulfebane......the black dont make them anymore viking.....i never said it did.....it was the color scheme i chose....................alot of the viking movies i have seen you see a lot of dark armor and clothes.....in this case it is style preference..........the skin tone............has had a wash added since these pics............these pics are a little old but they get you the basic idea on what i have been up to.....as far as Bronze..........i bought dwarf bronze but its way to orangy.........i went with this saharra gold cause.....it sorta ties in the yellow painted on the GW Space wolves......but instead of the yellow an earthy gold color.....i also use some red on some as well......as far as pelt colors i have stuck with just a black pelt across the line....i couldnt help but think do i add some browns, whites other grays......in the long run i didnt because of Ragnar......he killed a black maned wolf....as i have been painting wolves for the army i have painted them all black maned...........the wolves on 31 and 34 of the codex i look at them and i dont see browns........i see a frerocious black maned monsterous Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/239573-whats-your-influences/page/2/#findComment-2890968 Share on other sites
alphalupine
I started playing Space Wolves in about 1995 when I had met a tall, skinny fellow who asked if I had ever played a table top war game before. I said I hadn't but I was interested in knowing more about it. He showed me the rulebook and his extensive collection of Rogue Trader Eldar. While the pointy banana heads didn't appeal to me, the game did. So it was time to choose an army. It took about 2.5 second for him to look at me and my personality and say, I'll never forget this, "Without a doubt you are a Space Wolf Player." I couldn't deny it. I have loved wolves since I was 12, the time when my family had decided to purchase a Timber Wolf mix pup. Quite a bit of research was done before we picked up the black haired Alpha Male of his pack. From that point on I was hooked into all things Lupus. With a little foundation there I'll begin with my influence for my paint scheme. One of the first things that I really liked about the Space Wolves was their resemblance to Vikings. The Norse names and mythology mixed in with Fenrisians life style. However, like Maverick, I started to learn more by reading fluff that they were so much more than that. They encompassed my idea of a Barbarian from several cultures from our history. They were a bit Norse, Celtic, and Native American. So with these things all linked in my mind was shattered by the funny blue that Space Wolves were painted and labeled "Space Wolf Grey". That wasn't grey at all! Like most I wanted my Space Wolves to be identifiable so I went with it and painted up my army. While I was a poor painter back then I did the best I could, but I wasn't happy with the scheme. It was several years later when the EOT campaign kicked off along with the codex. The 13th Co. entry was what I had been looking for the whole time! Now these are what Space Wolves are suppose to be, act, look, and play like! I quickly stripped all my models and started painting them up! The rest is history...and the future! Here is one of my first painted Wolf Lords, Liam Spirit Wolf and a recent one of one of my Long Fangs. http://s240.photobucket.com/albums/ff214/a...t=IMG_1204a.jpg http://s240.photobucket.com/albums/ff214/a...nt=IMG_7772.jpg With the two books "A Thousand Sons" and "Prospero Burns" my ideas and thoughts of my beloved Vlka Fenryka run even deeper. I can't wait to pick up "The Battle of the Fang"? to see if it can even go further. I hope my post answers your question. adary
I like to paint my wolves grey/blue, and then dirty them up with some oil washes to make them more realistic. the grey/blue is a mix of my own using Americana craft colors slate grey and azure blue. works wonders for me: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cZQv72SBqzQ/Tn5OarZjw8I/AAAAAAAAArQ/pqzhIczOv14/s1600/IMG_1028.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/239573-whats-your-influences/page/2/#findComment-2891046 Share on other sites

What you see in the pic is about 60% of the city, and 40% of the gaming area. There is room for two more gaming tables, and there are shelves all around the room hosting some nice painted armies (mostly fantasy tho) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/239573-whats-your-influences/page/2/#findComment-2891539 Share on other sites
Mac the knife
Back on topic. I try to keep my wolves clean looking... Not the most successful at it but I think it comes off well on the table top. If I had to call for any inspiration I would owe mine more to the Celtic influences of the wolves. I see them in that light although i try to maintain a certain loyalty to established background. for your viewing pleasure Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/239573-whats-your-influences/page/2/#findComment-2891746 Share on other sites

Blacksad
my paintingscheme is mostly influenced by the ice-part of the fluff. Fenris, an ice planet, fenrisians, hunters, wolves, shizzle like that, so I opted for Ice Blue on most every model in the army. Grey hunters are the only ones that get a different base color, being space wolf grey. before anyone (Mav) comes in to have a pissing contest about that too, be warned, I'm known to take in great quantities of beer, thus will piss your house down (if I can figure out wether it's the left one, or the right one). ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/239573-whats-your-influences/page/2/#findComment-2891883 Share on other sites
