Kulgan
Hello everyone I'm able to get my hands on a basic set of the old Grey Knights. From that base I'd be looking forward to build a ( small ) army. It will be my first 40K army. I do have a few battles played ( blood angels/black templars-grey knights ) I'm reading the codex but it's a lot to understand, especially since my knowledge of the 40K rules isn't that good. A year ago I played a few battles and back then I knew the rules pretty well but after a year. Eiher way I have some basic questions, and would be happy to see any of them answered by the knowledge here on this board. * What does the ' activiation ' of force weapons mean? * In an Inquisitor + henchmen necessary for a all round list? I don't really like them... * The psychic powers for Grey Knights Strike Squad : you simply leadership test and if passed you get the bonus? * Are Grey Knights Strike Squads a decent troops choice, and if so what weapons etc are usually givven? * Are Dreadknights/Dreadnoughts primaly used as anti-armour because the troops lack the ability to take melta weapons/missile launchers? * I like how a chimera looks ; why take it over a space marine transport? Never mind I just read a chimera is for inq + henchmen only * Do you always take a hunter-killer missile for transports? * Where can I find psychic powers like Foritude/holocaust? * Do you take a dreadnought with two autocannons and psy-ammunition for 8 S7 shots? * How do Land Raider Crusaders work in synergy with the rest of the army? Many more to come, and thanks for answering! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/239587-starting-with-grey-knights-noob-questions/ Share on other sites
number6
Firstly, welcome aboard! :o Don't be afraid of noob questions, but I would recommend rereading the 40K BRB and the codex a time or two in concert with "training" games. It will help cement the rules in place. * What does the ' activiation ' of force weapons mean? An "activated" force weapon will cause Instant Death. * In an Inquisitor + henchmen necessary for a all round list? I don't really like them... Absolutely not. However, there is no way to get Chimeras without taking Coteaz or some other Inquisitor, because only Inquisitorial Henchman units may take Chimeras, and the only way to get Henchman units is by taking Inquisitors. * The psychic powers for Grey Knights Strike Squad : you simply leadership test and if passed you get the bonus? Thus it goes for all psyker powers. * Are Grey Knights Strike Squads a decent troops choice, and if so what weapons etc are usually givven? Oh yes, they're fine. :) I personally prefer minimal upgrades: a hammer on the Justicar (because he has 2 attacks and it broadens the threat capability of the unit) and as many psycannons as I can fit in (because that is the most important weapon in the GK arsenal). * Are Dreadknights/Dreadnoughts primaly used as anti-armour because the troops lack the ability to take melta weapons/missile launchers? You've got it! "Psyfleman" dreads (2x twin-linked autocannon, psybolts) are obvious and common. But stock dreads -- especially venerable dreads -- with a Multi-melta are also useful. * Do you always take a hunter-killer missile for transports? Almost never, actually. You can build a list built around a HK missile "alpha strike" ... but it's expensive. And in a GK list, every point counts. Depend instead on psycannons, etc., for your anti-armour duties. * Where can I find psychic powers like Foritude/holocaust? Fortitude is listed under the Psychic Pilot rules. Holocaust is a Librarian power, and on the page opposite the Librarian entry. * How do Land Raider Crusaders work in synergy with the rest of the army? However you need them to. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/239587-starting-with-grey-knights-noob-questions/#findComment-2890486 Share on other sites
Oiad
Heya Kulgan. Grey Knights are a great choice, elite of the elite and often there are very few models to paint. It's good to see someone else getting back into the game. I found myself in a similar situation to yourself a year and half ago (yeesh, that long already?) and felt quite humbled by the amount of rules to learn. Despite what seems a mountain at first, it's actually quite easy to absorb all the info depending on how fanatical you are about getting back into the hobby. Being a member of this board will help too. There's always someone ready to correct you if make a misstep, particularly if your interested in creating your own units. Anyway, here's further info for you. Number 6 has given you mostly agreeable answers but there some things that I feel could be added to them: 'Activating force weapons' is another term for casting the power associated with them. No,6 has told you what that is above. You can find more details on page 50 of the Main Rulebook, or BRB as it's often referred to. As above. Be aware that casting psychic powers has it's differences to a normal leadership test. Yet again all details can be found in the 'Psykers' section of the BRB (page 50) They're very flexible units and you get a lot of ability for their point costs. Most players prefer to rely on their shooting ability, whittling down opposing enemy units before charging them. As Above. As above. Number 6, normally so consistent but that's a rare case of dropping the ball. Kulgan, you'll find Fortitude in the 'Rhinos & Razorbacks' entry, on page 33. Holocaust is found on page 30, under the Paladin entry. There are a few varieties to suit different tastes. Most players find them to be too expensive but I've always had a soft-spot for them. I just wish they were dedicated transports instead, like the BA have. Hope that helps. :o Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/239587-starting-with-grey-knights-noob-questions/#findComment-2890506 Share on other sites
Irbis
* Do you take a dreadnought with two autocannons and psy-ammunition for 8 S7 shots? That is wrong, actually, it's 4 TL S8 shots, though, yes, I do prefer them over Dreadknights. Reclusiarch Darius
How do Land Raider Crusaders work in synergy with the rest of the army? Not great TBH. Bolter firepower is an inherent, not paid-for ability with Knights, and we have cheaper ways of obtaining melta firepower (Ven Dreads, Dreads, even Stormravens have twin-linked). Our Terminators and Paladins do fine on foot (unlike other armies their firepower is significant, and their threat potential isn't reliant on getting the charge), and none of our other units go above the transport capacity (not even with 2-3 characters attached). So, it's firepower at that price is relatively worthless (once you go psy-bolt the Hurricanes become main weapons sadly), and you waste the extra transport capacity. Black Templars are just about the only Marine army I see fielding LRC anymore, and thats because they get discounted abilities and wargear on it (not to mention it's a dedicated transport, and they can field 15-man squads that actually need the headroom it offers). Most of my local Marine playerbase have retired their Raiders (melta Vets and Dark Eldar being the main reason). Crusaders or Phobos (the normal lascannon one) are not patterns I'd recommend for Knights. Redeemers on the other hand offer something that capitalises on the Raiders strengths (ie being close to impossible to knock out of commission from long range, due to AV14, boosted smoke cover save and 'Fortitude'), you still have plenty of room (12 spaces or 6 for TDA), and the sponsons offer Knights a way to deal with dug-in infantry (our massed fire does ok against cover saves but nothing compares to Flamestorm). I don't field it (I like my Dreadknight too much), but it's certainly a viable option in both Henchmen (for DCA delivery) and Knight armies (Paladin/Purifier delivery).
