Crimson Fists Tanks

their kin

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I've been a ghost for a few months thanks to work being crazy, but now that I'm back in school it's time to jump back into my hobby as well.

I'm still chugging along at like 4 different projects, but the one that's caught my attention most recently has been my mechanized sternguard army. I have about half the models I need, and bought an airbrush specifically to paint the tanks (which before the airbrush I hated, now I'm in love). And I've been chugging along all weekend to get as far as I am.

Without further ado, here's a gaggle of pictures of the three tanks:

The 3 basecoated tanks

The Rhino/Rhazorback whose turret is unprimed (I know, I shake my head at me too)

And the interior:

And the Last one:

Also, I may have gone overboard with the weathering powder. But I like the look of it. What do you guys think?

Looking good ;) The weathering powder looks fine, maybe add alittle darker brown in some spots on the treads. Unless you are going for a certain light dust and grim look. Love the pic inside the rhino.

Keep it up man

cheers

Thanks talonatreyu. I'm going for a white dust cityscape style of grime, but it is a little too light. A friend of mine asked me if it was supposed to be snow, which was disappointing.

Talonatreyu: I'm thinking I should paint some battle damage, I'm just not sure how I want to go about applying it. I want rust or chipping from wear, as I think space marine vehicles will be too well taken care of for that in most instances. I do want it to look like it's been shot up a little, like the vehicles are a part of the battle. How would you achieve that (or anyone else for that matter).

Pick a point on the model for where it started taking fire from the enemy. Then mark black dots the size you want the holes to be. Have them go in one direction, spaced apart like gun fire. Drill the holes out and round the edges with your knife and with a wax carver or something like it. Paint over the damage with black then stipple with a sponge or foam from a blister pack with boltgun metal. Then lightly stipple again over that with lighter metal, you can also drybrush it. Slight streaks of chipped paint going out from the bullet holes look good in small doses. Also using black soot weathering powders on the damaged areas help add a realistic look to recent battle damage. You could also add long cuts into the doors or the front of the rhino for tyranid style scything talon damage. You can imagine hormagaunts scrambling at the front of it as they try and escape getting ran over or stealers trying to carve there way through a side door. I like to look up battle damage on military vehicles online and try to copy the way it looks.

Not a fan of using my phone to type this :D

Cheers

Thanks Grimdarkness, I appreciate the faith. It keeps me going.

Kaldoth: Crap... I didn't even notice that. My bad. Now I feel like a retard... But anyway, I'm gonna have to fix that now, I'll probably just paint over it.

Talonatreyu: I've done it that way before, but I don't want to carve into my model. I'm still looking around, and I've tried a few other ways of doing it that turned out okay, the problem with painting it though is that it tends to look like chipping rather than battle damage.

Thanks for the comments, tomorrow I'm going to do more!

Sat down to paint today and finished up the Rhazorback. All I have to do now is paint up the Rhino top hatch and the other weapon options and I can call this baby done. I think this weekend is going to have to be the Vinidicator weekend, so hopefully in a few days I'll have more tanks to show you guys.

Here she is:

And I just realized, I have to do the OSL on the cowling overtop the turret... crap.

Also, until I figure out how I'm going to do it, I'm going to leave battle damage off all the vehicles. Can't deal with it just yet.

And now, because even I'm getting bored with that Rhazorback. So instead, here's the first of the Vindicators in my motor pool. Also, side note: I've been playing for 12 years and this is only the second Vindicator I've ever painted, the first being the old school, second ed version that I got 10 years ago. I don't even know where that model is any more.

Anyway, enough stalling. Black and red base coats, check it!

Let me know what you guys are thinking. Enough red accents?
