he_plays_guitar
Hello fellow wolves, I'm a brand new pup looking to get my foot in the door. I recently acquired a decent size space wolf army from a buddy of mine leaving the hobby, he sold me everything. I figured since I now have the mini's and a codex, I might as well see what the Space Wolves are all about! Here's what I have: Space Wolves Venerable Dreadnought (Forgeworld) Ragnar Logan Grimnar Njal Stormcaller (one in power armor, another in terminator armor) Ulrik the Slayer Rune Priest Two Black Reach Dreadnoughts covered with SW bits 50 Space Wolves from the boxed sets, several with close combat with weapons 5 Space Wolf Terminators each armed with shields and CCW 5 Black Reach Terminators unassembled 10 Black Reach marines unassembled Land Raider Drop Pod Predator Annihilator with Forgeworld icons and extra armor Rhino Several large baggies of SW bits He sold me all that, plus paints and brushes, for $40 bucks. Now all I have to do is paint them! So my question is, what are some competitive builds, and what would be the most efficient build for what I have? Blacksad
I'd spend another few bucks to get a few razorbacks (which can be used as rhinos aswell) because footslogging, while a viable tactic, is hard to pull off. other than that, Logan makes your terminators troops, so he's not bad, but expensive... depending on the points you want to field, and the special weapons you have on those wolves I'd go for a bunch of grey hunter units (50 makes 10 units of 10, add the terminators as packleaders (perhaps make a unit of 10, add 2 cyclone missile launchers if you can make them from the bits, so you have a unit of 5 with 2 missile launchers left as your first elite / 6th scoring troop pending on wether or not you take Logan, with the predator and LR as long range support... you'll be lacking in LRS, but well, with any luck there's enough bits inthere to create a unit of long fangs as 3rd Heavy support Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/239727-brand-new-space-wolves-player-saying-hello/#findComment-2892104 Share on other sites
he_plays_guitar
I have some missile launcher bits as well as a plasma cannon, and I can find the parts to razor-ize some spare rhinos. I dont have enough termies to make troops, but grey hunters I could do. Is long range support a definite with the space wolves? My friend plays blood angels and his army is almost entirely close combat with hardly any long range. I'm still reading through the codex to get to know it, I've never even played against the SW so I'm not sure how they play. Blacksad
you have 10 terminators, so you could make a unit of 10, with Logan, to make them troops. but I was only talking out of my arse because I have no idea what kind of points totals you want to play. btw: Blood Angels is an assault army. a FAST assualt army. they can manage without long range support, but just barely. SW take a turn or 2 before they reach the enemy. If they don't have long range support, what's to stop the enemy from shooting them dead? red_starrise
The biggest difference between SW & BA is that BA are basically Khorne Berzerkers w/out bunny ears. SW are not a dedicated assault army. Rather we're a firefight army. A SW army works best by true combined arms tactics eg: long fangs & other ranged weapons bring the hurt from afar to cover the advance of the Grey Hunters who hop out of their rhinos & rapid fire into enemy elements then either receive a charge from a weakend unit & fight back as if they'd charged to begin w/ or decimate said unit w/ firepower the next turn. Another way to handle it is for Blood Claws to move ahead of the Grey Hunters to charge headlong into enemy units camped on objectives, much like a wave washing up on the beach, when they move on, nothing is left in their wake. Then the Grey Hunters move forward to take & hold that objective. Wolf Scouts serve the role of either assaulting or sniping the opponent's backfield, usually w/ quick, nimble units such as speeders, swiftclaws or thunderwolves assisting them in their role. he_plays_guitar
That's good to know, red_starrise. I'll keep that in mind when fleshing out the rest of the army.
