The Redeemer

The Holy Heretic

I need to stop looking at this thread now, before I seriously consider buying another Land Raider and painting it silver.

I need 3 more... a LR Prometheus in Inquisitorial red and black, a LR (godhammer configuration) with a multimelta and psycannon in GK colors, and a LR Redeemer with multimelta and psycannon in GK colors. Oh, and two Valkyries and a Storm Raven, but that's neither here nor there... and a couple Razorbacks in GK silver with psycannons.. yeah.. my to do list hates me...

Oh man, I feel your pain. My knights and canoness lie in wait at my darkened station until Minecraft releases my brain from its death grip. It's for the better, as it means I will practice more with my marines (and I needed the break from modelling 16 hours a week).

Anyway, yea. I feel weird with GK in Rhinos, even if it is sensible. My first force is foot-slogging. My second force of Knights will be as close as I can get myself to SR's core.

It would help if the Landraider was anything but one-dimensional. Nobody buys it for it's guns, or even it's durability (you can buy two tanks in most armies for it's price). The reason you field it is to transport a unit, most likely geared for assault (after all, that Assault Ramp is pretty unique in 40k). If you're trying to use it as fire support or a bunker for Tactical Marines, you're doing it wrong. Agree to disagree I think. ;)

I have to agree with the assessment that you're looking at the various land raiders with tunnel vision.

Also, Darius is making the mistake of assuming that what he personally sees is the universal truth. It's not true that nobody takes a Land Raider for anything but transport use, because I do so all the time (admittedly I don't plan to use them in my GK army much, but I use them a lot in my Ultras army... and it's NEVER to transport something which I want to disgorge into an assault.). I'm sure I'm not alone.

My Land Raider goes in my lists very frequently and either carries a Vanguard or an Assault Team (which is scoring as it's the BA dex I'm using). Regardless of its contents, it does one of the following:

  • Pushes hard, dies, and dumps its contents into melee range. Not necessarily in that order.
  • Purposefully stays just out of engagement range for my opponent's anti-tank units, goading them closer.
  • Moves to midfield (or gets Deep Struck) to present a Clear and Present threat, soaking fire that the rest of my transports don't need to worry as much about.
  • Drops off the melee team, picks up a tactical squad, becomes a midfield objective bunker.

That list is not exhaustive, but those are its most frequent uses.

In the heat of conversation, I hit the button and ordered GK Land Raider Redeemer complete kit from FW. Could someone who has ordered the same previously tell me if the kit includes plastic Godhammer variant of the LR or the newer Crusader/Redeemer kit? I aim to magnetise the weapons also for Godhammer variant and I need to buy them separately if it comes with Crusader/Redeemer variant.

Thanks in advance!

Erm, what? If you bought the Land Raider Redeemer/Crusader kit, it definitely does not have the Godhammer-pattern TL-Lascannons in it. It has one set of sponsons that can be configured to be either flame storms or hurricane bolters. I actually bought this kit and a LRR/C upgrade kit so I had two sets of sponsons to magnetize (far easier than working with single sponsons and two sets of weapons).

The Phobos fills a different roll than the Redeemer and Crusader. Here's a rough analogy (not perfect, but it's close enough for our purposes):

Phobos (two TL-Lascannons, TL HB) = Devastators

Crusader (two Hurricane Bolters, Assault Cannon) = Tactical Squad

Redeemer (two Flamestorm Cannons, Assault Cannon) = Assault Squad

The Redeemer is an up-close-and-personal Transport; like an assault squad it does moderate damage to infantry at short-range (with its assault cannon) and potentially impressive damage at point-blank (with its flamers). It risks much getting in close (due to enemy melta) but the reward is leveraging its flamers and depositing its passengers (who are potentially lethal up close).

The Crusader is a mid-range engagement transport; like a tac squad it does good anti-infantry damage at short range and fair damage at medium-range, and it can fire everything on a normal 6" move (provided you didn't take psy ammo). It gains little by getting close and risks itself (due to melta guns, etc.) but if the goal is to drop cargo, the Crusader can do it.

The Phobos is a long-range engagement transport. Like devastators, it's comfortable very far away and can offer anti-tank fire, even contributing some bolter fire should a target get too close for comfort. It sits back field and its contents - should they be scoring - it becomes a very annoying bunker.

Each of them serves a function. If you put one in your list, you will need to take into account what that Raider's strengths are and what you need to compliment them.

EDIT: typo

I stopped reading Thade's post when he used the term "Phobos".

Then you are a fluff n- pedant. ;) His identifying it by forge world of origin rather than most popular loadout has little impact on his assessment of its tactical capabilities.

It's been like this since the beginning, it still works, LR got POMS and Fortitude upgrade, Termies are troops and Halberds kickass...daemonhammers are free, GKGM got neat grand strategy and equips, PAGK (now GKSS) got own psychic and anti deepstrike. i'm definitely not complaining with my current list, it feels like all my troubles has gone with the new dex...

LR has been an integral part of my list, it delivers, it kick ass. period
