subtlebrush
"For Macragge! For Guilliman! Courage and honour!" http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/10/6/278962_sm-Ultramarine.png Hail fellow Frater! I have decided to work on everyone's favorite space marine chapter, the Ultramarines. The plan is to build an army from all of my old Marines and once I am finished re-issuing them, begin to buy new ones (kind of like my Knights of Blood army...). I currently have enough for around 1,000 points (maybe more). With the idea of re-issuing old, some painted horribly models I ventured to my local Wally World and bought a nice large jug of Simple Green. I set all my current power armour marine models in a nice deep plastic tub and poured in the SG (yes this includes my Knights of Blood and my Salamanders, think of it as starting over). After letting them bathe overnight, I pulled each model out one by one and began to brush off the old paint with a toothbrush. With everything dry and seemingly striped of paint I began to start again. Thus we have my first Ultramarine Astartes! (the pictures do the model no justice) Brother Midas of Squad Septimus http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/10/6/278919_sm-Space%20Marines,%20Ultramarines.jpg http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/10/6/278920_sm-Space%20Marines,%20Ultramarines.jpg http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/10/6/278921_sm-Space%20Marines,%20Ultramarines.jpg And finally a close up on the snow base, also my first real attempt at snow. http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/10/6/278922_sm-Space%20Marines,%20Ultramarines.jpg I really like how this turned out. The blue came out exactly how I wanted and I love the snow. I wanted it to seem as though he has been trudging through some heavy snow drifts while getting shot at constantly. The blue was a nice alternative to the stark white of my Deathwing (which I am still working on by the way). Brother Midas will be a part of a ten man tactical squad, squad Septimus. I also spoiled myself and grabbed the Blood Angel Death Company box. I've been wanting this kit for a while now and it was definitely worth the money. Born from this sudden splurge of money, I converted a Captain to lead my company. Captain Adonis http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/10/6/278950_sm-Space%20Marines,%20Ultramarines.jpg http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/10/6/278951_sm-Space%20Marines,%20Ultramarines.jpg I dont know why but I love powerfists. I imagined him screaming "For Macragge!", his power fist held high as the marines around him reply, "For Guilliman!" and then just obliterating the enemy. As far as modeling is concerned, I just have to fill the front of his legs. I will then paint them in gold and scribble some writing on it to make them look like honour "boards". I also have a Chaplain pretty much done modelling wise (transferred from my KoB respectively). I should have another Marine painted and finished over the weekend (maybe more if time permits). So think of this as a re-start on all the failed projects of old for me. I really have to stop being such a hobby butterfly and I will keep to my Deathwing and my Ultramarines. Thanks for looking and let me know what you think. +++Mr.M+++ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/239887-for-macragge/ Share on other sites

MagicMan
Dude, i keep having the same urge. Chuck all my marines in a bath and have them slowly come out as Ultramarines. That first test guy looks rocking... Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/239887-for-macragge/#findComment-2894546 Share on other sites
Tyrannicide
Nice looking start, the snow effects look perfect. I like the Captain but he doesn't scream "Ultramarine" to me, and that's one thing he should do since he's leading your boys into battle. I think if you replaced the back of his torso with the cloak from the Commander box set he'd look the part much more. As of now, he looks like an ordinary Sergeant. subtlebrush
@Grimdarkness: Thank you very much. @Ground Cloud: I found it in the tutorials section of the B&C. Its really easy. 1: Prime black. 2: Drybrush Chainmail all over the model (you can go crazy, just be sure not to over saturate it in silver) 3: Wash 2-3 times with Asurmen Blue. 4: Paint over the last coat (once it dries) with Enchanted Blue, making sure to leave some of the original color showing thru. 5: Highlight with Space Wolves Grey. Do just the extremes, don't go too wild with it. 6: Wash with Asurmen Blue. 7: Go back over some of the highlights with SWG, add some chipping and even some scroll work. @MagicMan: Thank you. I know exactly what you mean, I've been "wanting" to get started on Ultras for almost a year now. @Darth Potato: Thank you, glad you like the snow effects. I think you may like the 'ol Captain once I add the cloak and do some detail painting of the symbol. @Battle-Brother Ludovic: Thank you for the kind words. @Brother Melice: Thanks so much my friend. And since you demanded more..... Small Update So I apparently ran out of glue while working on my Ogre army. So until I can acquire some more I'll continue painting my Ultras then gluing them together once I get some more (I kept them slightly apart to help with painting). On that note I just finished another Tactcial Marine. http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/10/12/281002_sm-Space%20Marines,%20Ultramarines.jpg http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/10/12/281003_sm-Space%20Marines,%20Ultramarines.jpg That's his right arm on the bottom picture off to the side. And of course I just spotted a nice little wash spot on the snow.... Anyways, hope you like him and thanks for looking. +++Mr.M+++ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/239887-for-macragge/#findComment-2898717 Share on other sites

Megapope
Nice work! I really like your painting style, it's quite vibrant and a unique look. I think maybe the glow effect on the red eyes is a leetle overboard, but that's entirely my personal taste and not a 'you're doing it wrong'. Very inspiring. Will definitely be watching for more! I love that eye glow and I was going to ask you, Mr.M, about it, but then I realised that you'd probably end up giving a whole tutorial <_< Ludovic Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/239887-for-macragge/#findComment-2899161 Share on other sites

Tellos05
O great more smurfs just what we need! DarkVen
Very nice marines. I really like them. They're looking bright and saturated (especially blue armor). I'm very interested to see the whole squad... then the other... then some vets... then commander... then the army... so, in the far future <_< but seriously, want to see MORE. subtlebrush
Damn! A lot of replies since I was on last Hahaha First thank you all very much for the kind words, its definitely what keeps me going  Second, I think a glowing eyes tutorial is in the pipe line, just have to remember to photograph as I work on the next Marine. Now for Battle-Brother Ludovic's question on the gold and the pouches.... Gold 1. Tin Bitz Basecoat 2. Dwarfen Bronze Highlight 3. Shining Gold THIN highlight. Basically don't overpower what you've already laid down with the last coat of Dwarfen Bronze. 4. Extreme highlight of Chainmail. Pouches 1. Bestial Brown basecoat. 2. Snakebite Leather highlight. 3. Bleached Bone extreme highlight. 4. Wash with Devlan Mud. 5. Once step 4 is dry wash with Ogryn Flesh. And your done! I just finished the first rank of my Ogre Kingdoms Ogre unit so I haven't gotten to work on another Marine (a very good exercise in painting flesh I must say). The next Marine up will be the squad Flamer bearer. Right now they have no Vet. Sergeant. but I'm thinking of purchasing the ol' Veteran Mk.2 box set HERE. I always really liked those models and I have a special project for one of them to eventually become a Librarian for my Carchardons force for Adepticon 2012 (painting thread for them coming soon ;)). I'm also going to start a little extra on here I discovered from a good friend of mine on DakkaDakka. My current painting music choice for the day. Basically every time I post I will enter a song name for my painting music with a clickable link to the video so you all can see what inspires me while I work. Today's song: by Innerpartysytem Thanks again guys. Catch you later! subtlebrush
Thanks dijital_llama! Minor Update Its been a while hasnt it? Just a minor update. I printed out some photo backgrounds and took some new pics of the first Marine I finished. Now I see even more minor mistakes... I can never win haha. Anyways, hope you all like it with the new background! http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/10/28/287986_sm-Space%20Marines,%20Ultramarines.jpg http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/10/28/287987_sm-Space%20Marines,%20Ultramarines.jpg Thanks for looking, C&C welcome and very much appreciated. +++Mr.M+++ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/239887-for-macragge/#findComment-2911369 Share on other sites
Brother Melice
I love the progress... But if I may be so bold, try to make a softer blend between red on the lenses and the blue, to have a more natural glow effect, other than that, superb!
