Long term Red Scorpion project

PaintMyBits

Recommended Posts

I've decided that now my second child is now only a week or so away from making an appearance , that i would consolidate all my bitz box rubbish and use it to make as much as i could and ebay the rest to fund anything i needed.

i already introduced myself on the red scorpion thread but set this one up so as not to clog that up with all my nonsense. :(

My list is as follows:

HQ - Culln - 215

ELITE1 - Assault Terminators - 200

ELITE2 - Ironclad dread w/1x Hunter killer missiles- 145

- Drop pod - 35

TROOPS1 - 10 man tac squad w/melta gun - 175

- Drop pod - 35

TROOPS2 - 10 man tac squad w/melta gun - 175

- Drop pod - 35

TROOPS3 - 10 man tac squad w/missile launcher - 180

FAST ATTACK1 - Caestus Assault ram - 275

HEAVY SUPPORT - Predator Annihilator- 180

- extra armour

HEAVY SUPPORT2 - Thunderfire cannon - 100

TOTAL: 1750

The only thing i dont have at this point is the drop pod for the dread but i want to save for a FW one. I will get my progress posted with pics by tomorrow evening.

i got some quick pic updates. Apologies for the bad quality but its night and my second son is due any day so models are a distant second at the moment.

got the two drop pods for the troops, still separate base and tops on both for ease of painting. Caestus is all sorted now as is the thunderfire which is in bits again for ease of painting. I gave the predator extra armour as i think the SM tank just all look better with it.

This is my culln now with a little brass etch.

These are the the beginnings of my librarian and chaplain.

This one is the apothecary and standard bearer

its just my champion thats a way off at the moment. When i play these guys they will be just normal TH/SS termies but i wanted the squad to look like Culln most trusted aides. As the chapter master will fight along side the best and brightest in the chapter.

These are my apothecary Sargents for the tac squads which are all built.

Hopefully next month i will have the FW ironclad and drop pod to complete the list and painting can commence.

Looking good mate ;) Though, firstly, and more importantly, good luck with the baby!

Anyway, back on-topic, you really have some nice kitbashes and conversions :P Is that Chaplain an old model by any chance? And I like your use of other Badab War characters to stand in for various roles in your army!

Looking forward to the next update ;)

OK chaps. Got the iron clad sorted only thing on my army list that i dont have is the Dreads drop pod, which will probably be a christmas acquisition. Got a few more finishing touches with the building of the terminators and green stuffing and then im ready to undercoat. Painting will be a while as im a Dreadknight, 9 GK terminators and mordrak away from finishing a GK army. Here is the iron clad.

Been reading the first heretic again and after having a dark angel army I got used to colour variation in my army and I don't want to loose interest in this project so I'm wanting to use some of scibors custodians as sternguard. I know it's out there a bit, but I figure if they can be sent to watch the naughty word bearers they can be sent as a reward. In this case it will be for the red scorpions' purity. Which kinda fits with fluff as they get apothecaries as sergeants. Here are the models I will use and I think grey knight arms will be used. Just want a bit of flashy variation in my armies colour scheme!

Really enjoyed painting this, so much so im toying with the idea of a scout force led by shrike and see if i can blow some tanks up on the first turn?!

Sorry for bad pics guys, my photography skills really blow! ;)

When you take pictures that aren't blurry as hell, I'll comment on the painting. Otherwise, you haven't done too much other than swapping out some shoulder pads or arms here or there. If you spending an outrageous amount of money and have the time to build and paint an army, go bananas with conversions. The time put into converting a model followed up by a nice paint job is probably the most rewarding thing in this hobby.

If you are trying to grow as a modeler, I would suggest start using green stuff sooner rather than later. When I started using GS I sucked, but with a lot of time and effort it improved my modeling by leaps and bounds. Its daunting at first as a modeler.

As stated in first post. Time is at a premium at the moment.

As for this tid bit, im sure you were not meant to but it sounds a little condescending. Maybe i should have introduced myself better and im at fault. Im 30 now and in my 17 years of modelling i found that i paint for fun and i dont enjoy sculpting. I tend to use GS as a stop gap to achieve a more natural transition between bits used rather than constructing entire models out of it. And im crap at it! Now while i understand to push the boundaries of my skill set i should practice what im bad at but you need to enjoy it to make progress. Here is a small example of what i use it for:

This is a mordrak for my latest commission and i had to match up the vambrace of the forgeworld right arm to the GW left, so i just used GS to mimic the chasing on the armour

http://i688.photobucket.com/albums/vv247/Ladyboy07/DSC00839-1.jpg

This is the second DK and it had to be a little different from the first and to get the correct pose with the termies legs and the DK's arm you can see i had to resculpt just 2 of the fingers on the left arm so when hes glued to the base he will be grabbing the top of the column. Also with the terminator i have to remake some 'forest gump' callipers with plastruct and GS cableing. The entrails on the sacrifice are also GS

http://i688.photobucket.com/albums/vv247/Ladyboy07/DSC01425.jpg

On Khârn i used it to make a small portion of bicep.

http://i688.photobucket.com/albums/vv247/Ladyboy07/DSC01309.jpg

This one was a simple sculpting of the bullet showing in the top of the magazine.

http://i688.photobucket.com/albums/vv247/Ladyboy07/DSC00437.jpg

This one was a little more involved but again GS was used to bring the different parts together.

http://i688.photobucket.com/albums/vv247/Ladyboy07/DSC00835.jpg

My personal opinion is that with GS less is more.

At the moment with my scorpions im trying to push my freehand, as you can see with the scorpion emblem on the scout. (or not due to the photo quality.) Plus ive used pigments which have a ton of different application techniques im still trying to refine. Not to mention that the rust streaks were achieved with oil paint rather than acrylics.

For me the most fulfilling part of the hobby for me now is the clients satisfaction when i see the look on their face when they see their new army for the first time.

This army will be one i wont sell and will take time with everything from a servitor to culln.

Apologies in advance if this post makes me sound like an arrogant arse, as that is not the intention, i wouldnt want to throw my weight around on a forum im new to. This is the case im sure with above post as thats the trouble with the net, you can never tell how something is said.

But i will post better pictures when time allows and if i can get access to a DSLR.

Joel.

Just so I clear this up, my advice is almost never intended to be negative nor do I try to be mean about it. I meant what I said in the nicest way possible. As you pointed out, its hard to tell with the net. I've been painting and modeling for ten years now. It was the hard asses (not naming anyone) on this site that made me a much better painter and converter. A lot of the posts in threads on here offer very little substance other than they like the model. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but if no one is going to give constructive criticism, I most certainly will.

Don't get me wrong. I love hearing praise if it is deserved when I post a model on here, but I definitely appreciate the criticism that really helps me grow. I'm 20 years old, working close to 40 hours a week, and taking 16 credits at my community college, so I can sympathize when you say time is at a premium. If I had my way, I would be hanging out with my friends and painting models from the time I wake up until the time I go to bed. :D

I did what I hate on accident by not reading the first post of a thread thoroughly. Sorry for the confusion.

Hey that's cool just made the post to be clear on the direction I was coming from on this project so the criticism received would be relevant. But that was my foul as I'm new to the boards and probably should have done that earlier.

I hope I can get some better pictures for a proper response on the painting.

I'm with you on the green stuff, hate the stuff, but handy for small things and the occasional cloak(which cause me much anguish!)

And to be fair the painting looks pretty good, would be great to see some more detail but you can get a pretty good idea!

Love the Dread too, great weapons combo!
