Justicar Thawn Upgrades

The GK entry for terminators says any model can upgrade to a daemon hammer, if you upgrade your justicar and master craft it then upgrade to Thawn does he lose the mastercrafted hammer as it is not specifically mentioned in the seperate box with Thawns wargear. I have this PITA chaos player who does not like his DPs getting their heads clubbed like baby seals by a guy they cant kill. GKT Thawn treats DP's like the DP's used to treat anything else.

I want to take Thawn with a daemonhammer but the way it reads I am not sure I can, if I can what rule validates this choice please

If your opponent agrees to it then that's fine but the rules don't support it. Special characters comes as they are.

Emphasis mine. This is probably the answer you were looking for. <3 That said, B.O. makes a good point: if your opponent grants permission, virtually anything is passable. However, consider that he's not allowed upgrades for a reason: they decided he wouldn't be balanced that way. :P (Otherwise he'd have upgrades available!)

Thanks guys I thought as much just had to confirm it. I will still take him he makes me laugh. He is handy to allocate wounds and instant death to, the NFH is pretty nifty anyway no shortage of Daemon hammers in the rest of the squad. If Thawn must die its better he dies early in the game, he resurrects on a 4+.

If he gets left behind as a solo unit I though he might be more flexible taking the hammer.

I had this image of a crazed grey knight holding a thunder hammer running at a tank screaming kill me!

He's got one wound. wouldn't you want him attacking before the Daemon Prince?

he has as many wounds as his squad has .

And preferred enemy against daemons, as does the rest of the squad who do carry daemon hammers and psyout grenades if the GK get the charge off the DP is initiative 1 anyway, then the hammer hands get stacked then if he is around a GKGM chucks a couple of rad grenades at old beezlebubbah then the force weapons get activated. Pretty much a grease spot is all thats left. Dont feel any sorrow for Daemon Princes if you have been lashed or had your favourite unit wiped out by this guy in the past it is justice overdue.

Hi Drunken Angel,

Sorry to Hijack your topic, but I have a question of my own :

What happen to thawn if the unit he is with has psy-munition?

Does it benefit him?

If so if he die and them resurect, does he still get them?

Its a good question and very welcome

JUSTICAR THAWN .. . ............................................ xx Points Page 43

One Grey Knight Terminator squad can upgrade their Justicar to Anval Thawn

Justicar Thawn

Unit Composition: • 1 (Unique)

Unit Type: • Infantry (character)

Wargear:

• Terminator armour • Storm bolter • Nemesis force halberd • Frag and krak grenades • Psyk-out grenades

Special Rules:

• The Aegis • Fearless • I Shall Not Yield • Preferred Enemy (Daemons) • Psyker (Mastery Level 2)

Psychic Powers: • Hammerhand

Then this

• The entire squad can have psybolt ammunition xx points

I guess technically since Thawn has already lost his daemon hammer he loses his psyammo as well

On the other hand, Justicar Thrawn is a member of the squad at the time the psybolt ammunition is purchased (the beginning of the game) ergo he has the ammo. He does not become a different unit until play has happened, and at that point he still has his ammo :P

On the other hand, the separate unit information for Thawn doesn't list Psybolt Ammo, so your opponent might rule that when he's a separate unit in his own right, he no longer has any upgrades attributed to his previous unit (which might still be active), that he no longer is a part of.

In essence, some people might think it's, cheating, for two distinctly separate units to have an upgrade that is only purchased for one. :D

Until FAQed (and GW :)-ed up big time on their two 'single mini units in their own right and not ICs' they included in the GK 'dex. The current rules just aren't robust enough to explain how they work. Maybe this is something covered in 6th though...) you'll have to discuss this with your opponent.

All good points and very helpful, I guess ole thawn will just have to go with a NFH and std bolter ammo.

Yes I am the justicar Thawn the leader of this squad ... an immortal among men and still no one will pass me their thunder hammer or even a pannier of psybolt ammo

As first posted he makes me laugh thats why I take him he is .... immortal ..... what else is there to want? ;)

If a Force Commander walked into an armory and said "Hand me that Heavy Bolter, Sergeant," do you think anybody would tell him no?

Sometimes the army lists aren't there to reflect fluff-wise sense...sometimes they're there to reflect some semblance of balance. <3
