Claws of Corax
So this week I booked my place at the January Throne of Skulls Tournement. Now I have the task of deciding what to take (It's obviously going to be Blood Angels. The question is what else to take. The last TOS I went to I took Mephiston 3 Assault Squads 2 Baals and a Vindi. I could field any army based on each of the BA HQ's. I prefer Meph, Sanguinor and Astorath. (Dante consistantly under performs) What do you guys think would be the best choices for a list? PS I have over 10k points worth of BA so can field almost any list. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240162-january-throne-of-skulls/ Share on other sites
Captain Idaho
I find it best to take into account 3 things when building a list for tournaments (which are usually what I choose to play casually actually - always practicing!); Firstly and foremost in my opinion is what is your prefered play style? I like to have my Honour Guard and Dreads in my Space Marine list, as they are fun to use and I enjoy having a close assault unit, plus the Dreads fit my idea of versatility. I also like boots on the ground so I can afford to risk some infantry sometimes. These aspects I put in mind for any tournament as you want to enjoy yourself first. Lately the most dangerous lists out there are Razorback heavy Space Wolf Long Fang lists, Predator heavy Blood Angels lists and Grey Knights built with a mind of heavy firepower (Razorbacks springs to mind) or Paladin heavy lists. These 3 types of opponents are the least balanced of any army, with the exception maybe of certain Imperial Guard lists, though they have the weakness of being merely human. How are you going to face these opponents? Lastly what tactical options will you be using. This point generally is the connection between the first 2 points. Do you what reliable or lots of outlandish rules which are situational? I struggle with lists that rely on outflanking, Drop Pods and the like since I have the luck of recently swatted fly, so I go for conventional weapons and armour. This combines with my boots on the ground approach. This point is also where you consider how you are going to approach each mission under pressure from opponents. I'm sure you are experienced enough to know how to use this advice but sometimes it's easy to loose sight of what you already know when people are giving you lots of advice or you have a few rough games (it's happened to me lately actually). Hope I have managed to put it into perspective for you (and myself thinking about it)! Claws of Corax
England. Throne of Skulls is an event held at Warhammer World; Nottingham. I'll be going with a group from the Chelmsford Games Workshop. If you're local you shoulod try join us. --> Captain Idaho, cheers for the advice. Your points are VERY valid. I have a style of play which seems to be 3 Assault squads a named HQ and a few fire power vehicles. My problem is that everytime I play its with a different list, I haven't worked a viable all rounder. Brother Sergeant Scarus
Thank you Battle-Brother Ludovic. Lets hope the Emperor deems me worthy of bringing glory to the Blood Angels. Claws I was kind of surprised they took it back to 1,500 points (not that it matters to me too much, as a list-o-holic I've got lists for all occassions!). I think Idaho makes a valid point - some people think taking a balanced army means an army that can DO everything, whereas I find it's an army that can HANDLE everything. A fairly subtle distinction, but a valid one none the less. Last ToS I went to, I fully expected to come up against MEQ after MEQ - I fought 1 Deathwing, 1 Daemons, 2 Imperial Guard (both of which I somehow out-shot!) and 1 Necrons. Hah - who knows, next ToS you might well come up against the New Necrons :D (here's hoping). Have you thought any more about an army list? I really enjoyed the variety of the lists I saw last ToS - not just in general, but amongst the actualy codexes themselves (I think Wolves were the most guilty of 'Cookie-cutter' repetition), I think the top table BA player on game 5 was running: Librarian 100 Corbulo 105 5 Assault Terminators (2 TH/SS) 210 Land Raider Redeemer with Multi-Melta and Extra Armour 265 5 Assault Marines, 1 Melta, 1 Powerfist in a Las/Plas razorback 190 5 Assault Marines, 1 Melta, 1 Powerfist in a Las/Plas razorback 190 Landspeeder Typhoon 90 Landspeeder Typhoon 90 Autocannon/Lascannon Predator 130 Autocannon/Lascannon Predator 130 It was something like that anyway, maybe just a regular priest, maybe no powerfists and maybe something else I didn't see. But that was pretty much it in terms of actual models (we know wargear can vary) - it suprised me as a list, but it clearly worked for him. Then 6 tables down the line, on table 7, was a Descent of Angels list which also had an assault terminator squad and was lead by Dante - like I said, nice variety. I think as long as you find a list you like and then playtest the carp out of it, you can't go too far wrong. Unless the cubes look down on you unfavourably ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240162-january-throne-of-skulls/#findComment-2900077 Share on other sites
