moustache twirling World Eaters who demand one miiiillllion dollllars, muhahahah.

That made me almost spit my beer. If I could only sig that in context without making my WB look bad haha

Saa

Edit: (I do Ofc assume world eaters was a typo and you meant WB :P )

Skraal was pretty cool, but thats about it.

Aye. For me, he was about the only thing going for this book overall. I quite enjoyed it, but I wouldn't re-read it; I found the ending so utterly obvious and chichéd.

I wouldn't mind Skraal featuring in an 'earlier' novel.

To be honest, I've enjoyed every single HH book. Granted, some may not have been amazing, I feel like every single one contributed in some way. But that's just my opinion.:/

Agreed 100%.

You see for me the primary reason to buy (and eventually read) a BL book is that it is 40k fluff. This is the only attraction. It is 40k fluff done by professional writers instead of game developers. So even a mediocre book is way better than a dry account of a given faction's feats in a few pages in a Codex. Now, truth is, if the same books, by same writers were not about 40k, I'd not even know they existed. I'm sure there are tons of well written books of the SF or Fantasy genre out there but I don't know about them and frankly don't wanna know. I am not a SF literature afficionado - I'm a 40k hobbyist. So in this respect I'm just grateful I guess that GW ventured into publishing and hired some serious talent to get the story advanced, cemented and create further loose ends ;).

Obviously the sheer numbers of books coming out from BL inevitably means that some are better than others but who cares? Unless a book comes out with blank pages then it'll be in my list to buy it because I really need to know it's contribution to fluff (big or small). I've yet to come accross a book that did not worth me reading it in the first place. And yes that includes "Decent of Angels".

/agree 100%..

Though i do read and and love other Sci F, I am grateful that there is all this new 40k lore. It is a bonus that the writers are good. The first hand accounts of the Horus Heresy is more then I ever hoped i would get. To learn how close the Smerfs came to loosing the battle at Calth is great.

Theres only been one 40k Book i literally could not finish so far, which was Hunt of Voldurus. The Ultramarine book (Damocles? The Necron one?) was a close run thing too.

But all the HH books have been good enough to keep me going to the end, even if i enjoyed some less than others.

You've just set a quest for me! ;)

Magic Man you have to do something about your avatar... I've caught myself looking at it, nodding and smiling for 5 mins! ;)

... the 'demise' of Garviel Loken. Something which allegedly went against the BL Master Plot and, as a result, seemingly marked his card for penal legion duty early on?

You mean he killed of Loken without asking, thus forcing BL to resurrect him in that somewhat contrieved manner.... Wow...

Nothing so conspiracytastic.

As far as I know, the way it was handled in Galaxy in Flames had nothing to do with Ben Counter's inclusion in the team.

Theres only been one 40k Book i literally could not finish so far, which was Hunt of Voldurus.

It was bland, but I finished it. But BftA was just confusing/silly enough that it just went... Fizzzzzllleeeeee Pop! *Dies*

Galaxy in Flames was the only Ben Counter novel I liked.

I dont think his writing skill is up to par with the majority of other HH series authors.

Hush your talk, or we shall find the deadly Goto upon us again.

I will say as a Raven Guard fan boy i was more then a little disappointed with the Hunt. To me it could have been so much more. It was about the Raven Guard and the Alpha Legion, in no small part. These two have unfinished bushiness (Drop-site Massacre). The book came out in the times of the new HH novels, yet had not link or Easter eggs about that time. No hint that the Alpha Legion may really be loyal. No tie to Deliverance lost or Age of Darkness. The book came out after Legion right? The Shadow Captain should have been trying to break the Alpha Legion cyphers to get some pay back....

BftA at least moved the Lore ball forward, even if people think it was just a sidle line story.

Rumour has it Goto is being commissioned to write the Siege of Terra and Horus' battle with the Emperor........./jokes

You actually scared me there. I can just see it:

"The Emperor realised that Horus, his son, was no longer in contol, beyond saving. He knew he must kill him, for the good of mankind.

So he pulled out a multilaser, and killed him."

My bad! :P

I finished it in 8 hours when I was in Tenerife... (in 1 week I read Hunt for Voldorius, Fall of Damnos, God King and started Battle for the Fang...)

Back on topic, the only thing I didn't like about Battle for the Abyss was the seemingly wooden Ultramarine, other than that it was quite enjoyable

So he pulled out a multilaser, did a backflip, killed him, and brayed at the smoking corpse. Then a kid threw a rock at his head (presumably while backflipping, and possibly braying), and he died.

You missed a bit.

Fixed yet again.

backflips make everything better........as does braying..........he brayed

....or something like that

I enjoyed the book. My favorite character was the 1k son captain Mhotep. He kicked a** in that novel.

In my opinion his fight with the daemon is one of the best depictions of space marine vs chaos incarnate.

I still like it better than descent of angels or prospero burns.

Surely if it's Goto it would be...

Defiantly agree, I liked BftA. Reading TFH and Aurelian defiantly gave it some perspective on Zadkiel, his chapter and probably him were created to strike the death blow to the Ultramarines. His arrogance, ego and general thin moustache nature are because he’s delivering the blow Lorgar never will.

The word bearers are fanatical, unquestioning and an un understanding bunch. Not all of them have the questioning nature and depth that Argel Tal has.

Crap I'm glad I'm not the only one. That book was just painfully mundane and read like it was written for a 10 yr old, but I pushed through it since my gf bought it for me.

It really is just terrible. If it were to be the first book in the series a discerning reader were to pick up, they'd probably dismiss the entire rest of the series in disgust. Not that any of the HH novels have been overwhelmingly great, some are decent and entertaining license fiction. Battle of the Abyss is terrible from start to finish. The characters are one dimensional at best and cliche. Red shirts galore! If you're not a Captain, you're not important to the story! The plot is forced, nonsensical, and heavily derivative. Why are all these different Space Marines on one planet other than to make for a wild ride like a bad Hollywood action movie with one of every cliche character (see: Predators)? How, if all of the Legions have been doing their own thing, and are gigantic in size, do these Space Wolves and Ultramarines know each other so well? All building up to the giant cheesecake grand finale where our heroes are whittled down one by one until the final, pointless battle between Ultramarine and Word Bearer as the ship explodes! I can almost see the Ultramarine as Lloyd Bridges from Hot Shots Part Deaux. "We'll do this the old Navy way. First guy to die, loses!" Nevermind that the ship is about to explode and there is no real need or reason to go find his arch nemesis and have it out in hand to hand combat. He could have just abandoned ship in a shuttle. The heroically cornball sacrifice of the Space Wolf as he punches out his buddy to take his place. Never seen that in a story before, lol.
