Hammer
Hello, I'm building a 1750 points list that has, among other things, 4 members of the Wolf Guard. I have 4 packs in the army that WG can join and I would prefer that every one of them are being led by the heroic, mead-addled, saga-singing wolf guard. (So, fluff reasons weigh heavier than army effectiveness). Guard 1 has 2 x power fist (silly and expensive, but looks good) and leads GH pack 1. Guard 2 has power fist and combi-melta and leads GH pack 2. Guard 3 has T-hammer (and possibly combi-melta if I can scrape points for it) and leads Scout pack. Guard 4 has been assigned to the Long Fangs pack. I'm thinking of giving him just Storm shield to make his meat shield status a bit more effective. Is this a good way to go? Or do I need to give him a proper armament (say, a Frost axe instead)? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240422-wolf-guard-armament/ Share on other sites
CainTheHunter
Well, first things first. For 1750 points You have waaaay to few Hunters. The golden rule is one pack per 500 points, so You already are lacking one pack of GH. With Long Fangs the Wolf Guard are basically either an ablative wound to be discarded before the Long Fang Pack Leader, or they are sort of "Long Fangs in themselves" - packing decent punch both in CC and range. For the latter You need a terminator with power weapon, storm bolter and Cyclone missile launcher. Hammer
My list is not for tournaments really, just fun stuff I like to build... Wolf priest, Rune priest and Bjorn the fell-handed for HQ 4 Wolf guards, 6 Scouts, Lone Wolf for elites 2 x Grey hunters/rhinos for troops 3 T-wolf riders for fast Predator and Long Fangs for heavy I just hate those cookie cutter lists that seem to be the norm... I want to use as many different troops as I can, that's why the codex has so many choises. As for the Cyclone armed termie, I'd love to include him, but 4 Wolf Guards means no heavy weapons. And if I take a fifth WG, he would stay as single figure WG unit (i.e. free point for the opponent) because I only have 4 units where to hide the WG's. So, in bigger list, I can afford that Cyclone, but for now I need to come up with a meat shield armament... Storm shield him or not? LPetersson
Don't worry about a storm shield on the WG with the LF. but do see if you can afford to give him TDA. That comes with a nice 2+ save which will keep your Long Fangs shooting for longer. And if you can afford the CML, so much the better. Your list is a bit light on troops and heavy on characters, but Bjorn is an absolute monster so hopefully you'll be fine. Valerian
I use 18 point Wolf Guard as meat shields for my Long Fang packs, when I've got the points to support it. Nothing wrong with using him like that at all. Good technique for keeping a much more important heavy weapon guy alive longer, while also preserving your Split Fire for another turn or two. EDIT: Meet Sven and Hrothgar; they catch bullets for Long Fangs: Valerian Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240422-wolf-guard-armament/#findComment-2902079 Share on other sites
Quillen
It alot of my 1750-1850 lists I use 2 GH packs. It's fine. I win 90% of my games this way too. So do not sweat that. The 2 power fists look cool, but it's a huge point sink for 1 extra attack with could be a Storm shield or another GH or better yet part of a Cyclone Missile Launcher for the Long Fangs. Which I have done a few times and really works. Also you do not really need wolf gaurds with every pack. It's neat but you lose a free extra specail weapon which can be a big edge for a guy you are having to pay for and then pay to gear. The way I see it is beef up what needs beefing. Long Fangs are only 6 strong max. And every failed save is a weapon gone after the pack leader. So a Wolf Gaurd in Terminator armor with a Cyclone adds toughness and killiness. His 2+ means a normal round will probly not hurt the pack buying you time. The Cyclone will give 2 strength 8 shots down range. Add in a Storm bolter or Paired lighting claws and this guy can defend against an assault from flankers. I use to do WG in 3rd, but they just aren't as useful this time around. Heck you could almost get another squad for the price of them. Actually you can get another squad now that I crunch the numbers and it will do way more toward a win then 1 guy whom takes away a free weapon to make you pay more for one. And with a Mark Of the Wolfen and a fist in the pack they will do fine in melee on their own. Wulfebane
All these suggestions seem practical, but the OP said he's looking for fun and diverse, not practicality. As for the LF WG, so long as he's not given a special CCW, anything goes. Also, there's nothing wrong with a single 5th WG by himself.. consider him just another Lone Wolf... just more squishy (which would give you reason to make him less squishy, aka TDA and SS, etc). Hammer
I rolled the points around a bit and instead of 2 x 8 GH's I now have 3 x 7 GHs (+ 2 rhinos and 1 drop pod or rhino). Now my 4 Wolf Guards can be assigned to 3 GH packs and 1 scout pack. I gave the 4th one power weapon and melta bombs. The 2 x power fist guy does look great, but I guess it's too much. I'll drop one fist and think up a better use for the 20 points. Thanks for the answers guys! I won't put all of them into use because I want to have a hero heavy force (like in the fluff), so I have to sacrifice some of the effectiveness from the list. HQ: Rune priest Wolf priest Bjorn the Fell Handed ELITE: 5 x Wolf scouts - melta, power axe 1 x Lone wolf - TDA, chainfist, storm shield 5 x Wolf guard - TDA, Cyclone (Long Fangs) - melta bombs, power axe (GH's) - power fist, combi-melta (GH's) - Power fist (GH's) - Thunder hammer, combi-melta (scouts) TROOPS: 7 x Grey hunters - melta, rhino 7 x Grey Hunters - melta, rhino 7 x Grey Hunters - melta, drop pod or rhino (not decided yet. I have the drop pod, don't have rhino yet) FAST: 3 x T-wolf cavalry - T-hammer, S-shield HEAVY: 5 x Long Fangs - 2 x HB, 2 x ML 1 x Predator - Autocannon, lascannon sponsons Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240422-wolf-guard-armament/#findComment-2902594 Share on other sites
