Raise your tankards!

I played in a small Rogue Trader style Tournament yesterday, about 12 people were in attendance at Jesters Playhouse in New Jersey.

This was a 3 round 1000 point Tournament, and part of an Army Building series of events they are currently running there. They do this by running Tournaments every two weeks, beginning with 500 points and increasing in 250 point increments.

These tournaments are great fun, as is usual the turn out will increase as the points level increases. It's a shame really because the smaller point tournaments, are great fun, and a great chance to allow units you don't normally use to see the light of day and really have a chance to shine.

Here is the list I took for this event:

HQ: Wolf Guard Battle Leader with a pair of Wolf Claws and Melta-bombs

Elite: Dreadnought with Assault Cannon and Heavy Flamer

Elite: Dreadnought with Assault Cannon and Heavy Flamer

Troop: Grey Hunters x6 with Melta-gun. Mounted in a Razorback with Twin-Linked lascannons

Troop: Grey Hunters x6 with Melta-gun. Mounted in a Razorback with Twin-Linked lascannons

Troop: Blood Claws x8 with Flamer, Power Weapon, Plasma Pistol (yes a Plasma Pistol). Mounted in a Rhino

Heavy Support: Long Fangs Pack x6 with 5x Heavy Bolters, the Pack Sergeant has a Power Weapon

Above is a picture of the army I took.

As you can see I took the opportunity to field one of my Character models that I don't normally get to field. Wolf Lord Thorgrimm in his Power Armor and favored equipment when he is on foot. In this force he represents Thorgrimm as a Battle Leader before his elevation to Wolf Lord.

Above you can see the latest addition to my army, a Razorback. This is my first attempt at using the "Army Painter" brand of sprays, and I have to say I really love it. Part of the reason why I have had only one Rhino and one Razorback in my army is because of how long it takes to paint them by hand. The Army Painter spray, while making the final outcome a little lighter, cuts the time down significantly. I finished this Razorback in a single afternoon, that is assembly and everything.

You can see that this force is a significant change from what I normally field, especially with the absence of Bikers. This force while not really accurate was inspired by Battle of the Fang. Truthfully, if I had one, I would have fielded a 3rd Dread just because it looks so cool.

I also fielded my Long Fangs with their Heavy Bolters without Logan. Normally I wouldn't do this, as they usually run with the Old Man for Relentless and/or Tank Hunter. I figured that at 1000 points though their volume of fire and range would really come into its own.

I gotta run for now, but I'll post some brief Battle Reports later.

Thanks for reading my ramblings

I'll drink to that.

I love the look of your army especially the orginal version-Sicarius conversion, that figure always should have been a space wolf and was wasted on the boys in blue.

Your razorback looks sensational. I'm soing to invest in the sprays for another Landraider, as soon as I find out more about them.

Awesome painting - I love how your models look.

Yeah, I was going to ask about that, but you addressed it yourself. I imagine it must be a considerable shift in playstyle to go from a bike-centric list to a more "conventional" one.

Looking forward to your reports!

He had too after posting that awesome article. Gave all his tricks away...lol

Thanks for the comments guys,

@Volsung, I did by quite a few sprues, but there was a time when you could order that back pack as a metal bit from GW mail order bits, so I picked up enough to do my whole army at the time.

Anyways on to some batreps.

Game 1 was against a Salamanders army, yes he fielded Vulken in a 1000 point force.

gallery_743_2103_721965.jpg

His army had Vulken, 2 Tactica Squads with Melta and a Heavy weapon (one had a Missile Launcher the other a Lascannon), one was mounted in a Rhino the other he split into combat squads with the Missile launcher on foot with Vulken with the other combat squad being mounted in a Razorback, a 5 man Terminator squad, and 2 Landspeeders with Multi-Melta and Heavy Flamer which he held in reserves for a deep strike attack.

The mission: Adversaries

Board Corner set up, Primary Objective was Kill Points (10 Battle points), the Secondary Objective was Arch-Rival (6 Battle Points) to win this objective you had to kill the opposing players commander, and the Tertiary Objective was "He's Mine" (4 Battle Points) To win this objective your commander had to kill the opposing players commander.

I won the roll off for first turn and gladly took it. You can already see my opponents deployment above, mine is below

gallery_743_2103_376030.jpg

He did attempt to sieze initiative, but failed. With a Large hill in the center of the board blocking most of the line of site to his army, I scooted for position. I shifted my two Razorbacks to my left 6" to take a couple of pot shots at his Razorback, while rushing my Rhino filled with Blood Claws and my commander forward, my two Dreads shifted to the right out of the way of the Rhino, and positioned themselves in such a way as to support either flank of my force if needed. My Long Fangs in the woods stood fast and simply waited for the enemy to approach covering the right side avenue of approach.

With my Razorbacks only causing a "Cannot shoot result" my turn ended. In my opponents turn, he began his advance.

gallery_743_2103_1085123.jpg

Above is the board at the end of turn one.

In my turn I wreck his Razorback, and begin to open fire on his Terminators with my Long Fangs the hail of fire drops one, I have Line of site on his Rhino with one of my Dreads, but fail to scratch the paint with my assault cannon.

His turn sees him reacting to my Fire Power and attempting to consolidate his position. He backs up the Combat sqaud towards Vulken for protection, and his Land Speeders Deep Strike in to support his main line while continuing his advance on what he considers my weak flank where my Long Fangs are lodged in the woods. He opens fire with his Terminators Storm Bolters on my Long Fangs and Good Ole' Sarge goes down.

gallery_743_2103_251875.jpg

I take advantage of his "Back peddling" and push my assault. I rush my Rhino 12" hard to my left and pop smoke preparing to assault his squad and Vulken next turn. I shift my Razorbacks another 6" to use the Lascannons to take out the Landspeeders, and on my other side, the two Dreadnoughts continue their advance adding to the Long Fangs fire power to lay a considerable amount of fire power into the Terminators. In my shooting phase, one speeder goes down, and the other can't shoot, with only one Terminator remaining his assault on my right side is quickly running out of steam.

In his turn, he attempts to bring down my Rhino he hits and penetrates but the smoke saves me. on the other side, he continues his press with his lone Terminator and the Rhino with Tac Squad, he scoots 6" with the Rhino and takes a pot shot at one of my Dreads, but is outside of the 6" "double dice" range and the shot is ineffective.

In my turn I bail out of my Rhino, and position myself for the charge firing to soften them up as I do so. the Flamer, Plasma Pistol and the shots from the bolt pistols drop 4 of the marines before I even charge (chalk up one kill for the Plasma Pistol) On the other side, my Long Fangs finish off the Terminator Squad, while the Dreads pop the Rhino.

Passing his Leadership check I charge into Vulken and the Tactical Marines. The next couple of turns just sees me mopping up the remaining Tactical Squad on my right side, while the close combat between my Wolf Guard Battle Leader dukes it out with Vulken.

Winning combat in Turn 4, he promptly fails his leadership check and escapes my clutches fleeing off of the board and giving me total victory!

A 20 point Victory for the Space Wolves.

I am not going to even try and pretend that there was any real brilliant play on my part in this game, my opponent was a new player. After the game we had a little discussion on some of the things I would have done differently if I had his army. Over all though a fun game and a very pleasant young man.

The prequel to the legend of Thorgrimm? Awesome!!!

No wonder you went undefeated. Watching his rise to Wolf Lord will be quite entertaining

After winning the first game and taking some time to look around I noted a couple of armies that I believed could really give mine a hard time. Most notably an Imperial Guard army built in a Mech/Vet fashion with a Vendetta thrown in for good measure, and a Dark Eldar Army packed with those smaller transports and no less than 7 Dark Lances.

It seems however that neither of those two armies were very suited to the first games Kill Points as a Primary Objective so neither were able to get the full 20 Battle Points.

This led me to face a Chaos Marine Army painted in the colors of the Iron Warriors. His army was a compact force with 2 standard Chaos Marine squads mounted in Rhinos, a Six man Terminator squad with combi-meltas and Power fists, a Chaos Lord in TDA with a Power Fist, and a Chaos Land Raider.

The mission was Recover and Reclaim, Primary objective: Listening Tower, "The first time a unit enters into a terrain piece roll a D6, if a 5 or 6 is rolled, you have discovered the Listening Tower, and that piece of Terrain becomes the Objective". (10 Points). Secondary Objective: Man Down, "Place a marker or unused model in your opponents deployment zone, this model becomes an objective, to take this objective you must have a scoring unit within 3" of your own marker at the end of the game" (6 Points). Tertiary Objective: Grind them to a Halt, " the player that destroys the most armor or monstrous creatures wins this objective." (4 Points)

Deployment was Dawn of War with 1st turn Night Fight.

I won the roll off for first turn and placed my objective approximately 25" onto the board (just 1" inside his deployment zone) on my far right side, just along side of a hill. My opponent did likewise on the opposite side of the board.

I deployed my Rhino with Blood Claws as my two troops, and my HQ was with them, hitching a ride. I placed them behind the hill close to my downed man, planning on hunkering down and making him shift me off of the objective. My opponent started with one Rhino with Chaos marines on my left side, setting up to take his "Man Down" objective everything else was off of the board, he then declared that he was deepstriking his lord and his Terminators.

Since my opponents army only had two troop choices, I decided to split my army into two sections. The two Dreadnoughts came on the board to my far left, using a hill for cover and advancing on his "Man Down" objective, using thier run move to cover even more ground. The rest of my army came on hard on my right side in support of my Blood Claws and Battle Leader. The two Razorback units came in on the Right side of a hill taking cover behind it, while the Long Fangs moved up behind the same hill and used a run move to attempt to climb up onto it. a roll of a 1 meant that I got onto the terrain, but would have to use my 2nd turn to gain a line of sight. This was the first terrain piece of the game that was entered, rolling to see if this was the "Listening Post" I rolled a 6! :) well, this never happens.

I ended my turn with no shooting but in what I felt was a good position.

In his turn my opponent brings on his Land Raider, taking up a position to advance upon my "Man Down" Objective and the "Listening Post", he follows up with his Rhino with the second Chaos marine squad behind the land Raider, using the behemoth for cover. He rushes the first Rhino with its Chaos marines towards his own "Man Down" objective and towards my Dreadnoughts. With no shooting his turn ends.

In my second turn, watching his advance, I decide to quickly change my plan. I scoot both Razorbacks 6" into position moving them side by side, one towards my "Man Down" and one in position to take the "Listening Post". My Rhino turns and heads back, behind the Listening post, out of the way of the Grey Hunters advance, preparing to position itself for a counter strike for what would be the impending Chaos assault. My Long Fangs take up a position on the hill. I take this opportunity to take a couple of pot shots at the Land Raider since no better targets present themselves at this time, not even scratching the paint.

In his turn, he rushed the 1st Rhino again towards his Man Down Objective, bails them out of their ride and makes for the hill with his run move, taking cover in the rocks. He attempts to move his Land Raider for a better shooting position, but gets it stuck in the terrain. With a curse he surges his other Rhino towards my lines. His reserve roll was successful, and he conducted a deep strike maneuver into my lines right in front of the hill with the "listening Post" but, he rolled a 12" scatter away from my position! Yeah, that's three breaks for me thus far this game...

I advance with my 2 Dreadnoughts, the combined fire power of 2 heavy flamers, and 2 assault cannons make a mess of the Chaos marine squad, I charge in with the one Dread that can reach and easily finish them off. I shoot one of my Razorbacks at his Rhino advancing on my hill and pop it open. I concentrate the rest of my fire power on the Terminators in front of me with the rest of the army, 1 Twin-linked Lascannon and 15 Heavy Bolter shots later and only 1 terminator falls.

In his turn he continues his advance, shooting with his Terminators and wreaking one of my Razorbacks, and pinning the Grey Hunters, all this while the Land Raider has been using its fire power to whittle down my Long Fangs pack, even immobilized it is still a dangerous piece of machinery.

In my turn my other Grey Hunter pack bails out of their ride and climbs the hill, my Blood Claws and the Battle leader bail out of the Rhino and move around the hill in preperation for the counter attack. The Long Fangs open fire on the now exposed approaching Chaos marine squad, and with the combined weight of fire from the Grey Hunters, the Blood Claws and the other Razorback, kill 7 of their number!

gallery_743_2103_733400.jpg

Above you can see the final push of the Chaos army.

My Dreads now free of the Chaos marine squad catch and destroy the Rhino and start to bear down on the Land Raider.

the Chaos army is now effectively caught in a pincer attack.

He continues his advance, but is woefully out-gunned and not quite in assault range.

in my turn I open fire and assault

gallery_743_2103_929879.jpg

After the onslought, that is all that remains.

I let his last remaining Chaos Marine flee off the battle field to carry word back to his Lord that this planet belongs to the Sons of Russ.

20 Points

P.S. My Plasma Pistol toting Blood Claw shot and killed a Terminator! 2 kills for the Blood Claw!

Most notably an Imperial Guard army built in a Mech/Vet fashion with a Vendetta thrown in for good measure, and a Dark Eldar Army packed with those smaller transports and no less than 7 Dark Lances.

What about that other Space wolves army running the two Rune priests? lol. Anyway great battle report, I was wondering how you took down the Land Raider. Now I just have to wait impatiently for the next one as that looked like a battle royal.

Truthfully, my thought was to ignore the Land Raider until it got close, and then use Melta to try and take it out. He didn't have any cargo in it, and while it has a bit of Fire Power to it, I didn't feel it a good choice to waste my fire power on, especially with all those Terminators right in front of me. His only real option for using it effectively was to contest my objectives, once he immobilized himself, I ignored it (well except for my Dreads who were bearing down on it, but by then, the Land Raider was the only feasible target for them).

Oh, and I wasn't worried about that "other" Wolf army, I mean it has Rune Priests in it for crying out loud...

Crap, I almost forgot about game 3.

Game three was against my old nemesis, Matt and his Sisters of Battle Army. His army had roughly the following: 2 Sisters Squads, one was mounted in a Rhino and had 10 members, the other was larger and foot slogging it. He had a Seraphim squad, their version of a Dev squad with 4x Heavy Bolters (for volume of fire against infantry and hoping for the rending against light armor), He had a squad of Repentia led by Uriah Jacobson mounted in a Rhino, and 2x Exorcists.

I am sorry for a lack of pictures in this game report, but we were on table one and Matt is a skilled opponent, so I was a bit distracted with game play and forgot to snap any photos.

The mission: "Alone and Unafraid" Board corner deployment,"Cut Off rule in effect" only units that are not Monstrous Creatures and without a dedicated transport may be deployed at the begining of the game, all other units are held in reserve.

Primary Objective: Recon (10 points) the player that has the most scoring units in his opponents deployment zone at the end of the game wins. Secondary Objective: Wounded Soldier (06 points) who ever controls more of the wounded soldiers at the end of the game wins this objective (opponents and your own). Tertiary Objective: Capture and Control (04 points) the player who controls the most objectives at the end of the game wins this objective.

My opponent won the roll for first turn and handed it over to me. The only unit I had to deploy were my Long Fangs, which I deployed on a hill in my corner with a commanding view of the battlefield. He deployed his Devs with Heavy Bolters on the opposite hill in his zone, also with a commanding view of the battle field.

In my first turn I tested the range, opening fire on his Heavy Bolter toting Sisters squad, but found I was just out of range. In his first turn he stood fast. (this was going to be a quick game.)

In my second turn, I roll for reserves, and a single Dreadnought comes on the board, with no support. I move him on six inches and then use my run to get him as far forward and in cover as possible.

Matts reserve rolls are much better, as most of his army comes on the board, and he immediately starts advancing towards my lines, setting up his Exorcists with a good field of fire.

In my Turn 3, I again roll for reserves and you guessed it, my other Dread comes on :P , I have a bad feeling about this...

I advance with my other Dread, popping smoke, and advance as quickly as I can with the newly arrived Dread as quickly as possible.

In his turn, he opens fire on my Dreads with his Exorcists as he advances with the rest of his army. His foot sloggin Sisters squad is advancing up my right side towards my Long Fangs while the two rhinos with their cargo are positioning themselves in front of my Board corner.

Turn 4 for me, the rest of my army finally decides to put down their beer and join the fray. I decide this is going to be an all or nothing venture if I am going to do any thing this game. I rush one razorback onto a wounded soldier marker and quickly take that objective on my far left, away from any of his units and in cover. I rush my other Razorback onto my Capture and control objective, and move my Rhino with BloodClaws and Battle Leader forward a full 12" and pop smoke.

Some shooting from my Fangs onto his large sisters squad ends my turn.

His shooting is awesome this phase, as he destroys the Razorback on my command and control objective leaving my Grey Hunters on the objective taking cover in the crater that was once their ride. He manages to blow the turret off of my other Razorback, the Rhino makes it through unscathed, as do my Dreads.

In turn 5 I make a push with my Rhino, taking me to the halfway point across the board. Not wanting to risk it, I opt to not disembark to take the Recon objective, but to hope for a 6th turn, so that I can disembark and move into some cover. (too much AP 1 shooting for my liking.) The rest of my army hunkers down and prepares for the onslought. My Long Fangs open fire again on the large Squad and cause them to run! Pushing them back away from my Deployment zone and the Capture and Control objective. My Dreads wreck the Rhino with the Sisters Repentia and Uriah Jacobson, but are too far away to charge the infantry.

In his turn five, he destroys my Rhino with the Battle Leader and the Blood Claws, and he attempts to destroy the squad holding my Capture and Control objective, at the end of his shooting phase a lone Grey Hunter with a Melta-gun stands on the objective, he passes his morale test and stands fast (securing his position into the Wolf Guard).

He then suprises me and assaults my Blood Claws and Battle Leader with the Sisters Repentia and Uriah Jacobson. He loses horribly, killed to a sister. I consolidate with a 4" move and move the entire unit into his deployment zone, taking the Recon objective.

With the roll of a 1 the game ends, with the Space Wolves holding all 3 missions!

Thanks Tsavong, it's the old Sicarius model. As others have already commented he just begged to be converted into a Space Wolf.

While the conversion itself is a bit extensive, there are not many added bits to the model. I used a couple of "Wolf Medallions" from the Knights of the White Wolf sprue on his chest and right shoulder pad, I filed down some of his more Ultramarine type insignia, and added some wolf pelts to his waist, banner and right shoulder, the chain about his waist is also green stuffed.

His hair and facial hair were the most difficult parts for me, at the time it was really pushing my green stuffing skills.

The paint job is my standard Space Wolf paint scheme, there is an article on this site on how I accomplished that.

I was looking around for some old WIP photos, as I thought I had some, but I just can't seem to find any.

I really enjoyed how this list played at 1000 points, it was a drastic change from my normal play style, but the amount of fire power I could throw down range felt like a lot, while still maintaining some close combat ability in the form of the Blood Claws.

Now to get ready for the Mechanicon...

Great stuff ´bitz! :) Your stuff looks as great or better than I rememeber it, you still play great and make interesting lists - not just "net-listing". :) I love Blood Claws so it´s nice to see you include a bunch.

Big thumbs-up and congratulations!
