The Conquest of Viking XXX

The Holy Heretic

Recommended Posts

So I just returned from a tournament and decided to write up a little report.

My list:

GKGM - blind, rad, psychotroke, incinerator

5 Paladins - 3 halberds, 2 swords, psycannon

Dreadknight - heavy incinerator, greatsword

Psyfleman

Coteaz

6 DCA, 2 Crusaders, 1 mystic in Rhino

6 Warrior Acolytes w. Stormbolter, 2 Melta Acolytes, 1 Mystic, 1 Jokaero

6 Warrior Acolytes w. Stormbolter, 2 Plasma Acolytes, 1 Mystic, 1 Jokaero

1 Vindicare Assassin

Fight number 1: The Ultramarine Menace

A walkover. The Ultras were clearly innocent, as their corpses showed no sign of corruption, a shame they chose to fight and die to a man. An easy battle vs. a young boy and his smurfs. He'd never fought the GKs before and had no idea how to fight them, while he also lacked scoring units (especially after I'd ripped his entire army apart - I almost felt bad :P ).

Fight number 2: The Ork Surprise

Again it was vs. a player who'd never seen a GK in his life, and he made the mistake of charging his warboss, nobs, bikers and whatever into my paladins, a few grenades and some hammerhand love later they were all gone. luckily for him the game had 4 objectives, which required to be assaulted to be controlled, and 1 failed run check turned victory into a draw - but I learned a great lesson about the dangers of sustained small arms fire to paladins/dreadknights.

Fight number 3: The Daemon Incursion

Yay! I was psyched. My GKs first meeting with daemons. He was on the other hand thrilled that I hadn't any strike squads to hold his deepstriking back. There were 3 objectives in the middle of the field, and by the end he controlled 2 and contested the third. His success primarily due to my lack of mobility, while his 3 tzeentch heralds were zooming around in chariots and a daemon prince trying to blast me apart from a distance. Hero of the match was the Vindicare who valiantly fought the DP for three rounds of close combat

Fight number 4: The Death Korps of Krieg

My opponent was a tired old man, eager to go home and get some sleep, so the game felt very rushed and not that much fun and time for chit chat - not the kind of games I like :P. Well, the game was a first against Krieg, and boy was I scared of all those big mortars and guns, and the looming threat of the Hades drill was making me a bit nervous, but the dice were on my side, both my paladins and dreadknight deepstruck on the second turn, while my Vindicare took out both the Vanquisher and the Hellhound tank in two shots. By turn 4 there were barely a single guardsman left, and we decided to shake hands, as he had only managed to kill a couple of acolytes and mystics and immobilize a rhino.

So what did I learn? I liked the list, it had a good mix and plenty of power. I realize how I'm lacking good mobility, and the greatest weakness is if people reckon how dangerous the pallies are and choose not to engage them :)

Well, I happen to be the tired old man from game 4, and I appologize for it being rushed.

But I was feeling aweful and needed my bed badly (13 hours of 40K will do that to me).

Not much to add.

I came to the tournament with a fluffy and very soft Death Korps of Krieg. I knew I was going to loose a few games.

But I enjoyed 3 of the 4 games. Yours was one of the once I enjoyed.

Maybe we can get another game some other day when I am more fresh.

Krieg really suffers at low points and for the following facts:

1. No transport: Chimeras are not allowed in Krieg lists (Yes you can have 5 man transport for you commander or grenadiers)

2. All artillery is immobile, meaning no pivoting, meaning stuck with 45 degress firing arc. Some artillery can get support vehicles to help with this, but are normally expensive in point (and money since it is forgeworld).

Anyway, I enjoyed the tournament and the game. So thank you.

Kind Regards,

Less tired old man, Rune aka ItchiBuh

Haha! Its such a small Internet after all :D

I'm definitely up for a fight again some day, you had a great looking army, and thats the point of it all after all :)

To be honest, I appreciated the 'rushed' pace, since I was running rather low on energy too by then - but I do prefer having the time (and energy) to enjoy my games, I'm not awfully competitive and primarily attend tournaments just for the fun of seeing and playing vs. different armies. Yet being a noob at 40K the 'rush' made me a wee bit nervous :)

Besides, I should remember to thank you for helping in figuring out my paladins triple charge at the end. A class act and great sportsmanship :)

I am always playing fair !

It is easy to overlook things or forget units in the heat of battle, so, it is only right to point it out to people you play against.

I normally play slower and enjoy my games and like you self, I do not play to win, but to enjoy good looking armies on good looking battlefields.

I am ready most days and we can play in Emperor's Pride basement if it suites you (you have 2 free visits before you must deside if you want to join the gaming clib or not).

Take care and may teh best imperial player win ;o)
