Beef
So I attended a tournament this weekend called Octoberfest because its in October. Beef
Now Before anybody says anything there were 6 games played over the weekend. 3 on Sat and 3 on sunday. Max points per game is 20. so if you score 20 your opponent gets 0, if you get 12 he gets 8 etc. So the first game was against IG. My plan was to lose all my games and stay on the lower tables where all the fun armies and nice people were. Yearsd ago when i used to game competitivly I would end up on the top tables playing against the same armies again and again with players that were douches who would argue about every little thing. you would spend more time arguing and looking over rules books than actually playing. So i had no problem losing to gaurd, I did not even have to try he just blew me up from far away. Below is mine and the gaurd players army and mine on the tabletop. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g320/vittorio_13/IMG00298-20111015-1205.jpg http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g320/vittorio_13/IMG00297-20111015-1204.jpg Result Game one IG 20pts Beef 0pts. so i was onto a good start. this meant my next game would be against some of the lower tables. So i moved down the table and faced a Marine army. Now these were the type of players i wanted to play against. He had nilla marines but painted as SW, BA/IF. his fluff was that they were a crudading force. his army is shown below. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g320/vittorio_13/IMG00300-20111015-1206.jpg He was a really nice older player with a well painted army. After my wolves being bombed in the first game all I wanted was to shed some blood. I managed to slaughter most of his army but unfortunatly despite my best efforts to still lose (by not holding objectives) the guy asked why i was not holding objectives cos that would win me the game to which I replied (all weekend) SW dont hold objective, we kill stuff. Unfortunatly the game ended in a draw. Marine Crusading force 10pts Beef 10pts, Damn i wanted 0pts. So the final game of Sat was against another Marine player. No pics, sorry. Basically he was using Salamanders and it was 3 objectives which you could pick up and move around with (no transports or bikes etc) any way i walked past 2 objectives and even let him hand over his objective to a squad mate(even though they were not anywhere near) cos HQs could not hold them. He asked why i walked arjacs squad past 2 objectives and instead went dirctly into his squads. SW dont pick up objectives, that leaves one arm less for killing. He had Vulkan Hestan and 2 Vindicators, 3 Multi melta Landspeeders and loads of tac with melts and an attack bike with multi melta. First turn i took one of his Vindies out as this was the real threat to my termies with its AP2 pie plate. Then i tried to take his landspeeders out as they were the next threat, Luckily over the course of the game i took those out and the attack bike but not before he had taken out my Dreads. End result Sallies 20 Beef 0 Yay I killed all his army but left just 1 or 2 guys from a squad to pick objectives up for him. That was the end of the first day. I was now on the lowest table. My wolves had killed enough marines which ultimatly is all I wanted. I explained to some guys that there are 3 tyoes of gamers that come to tournies. 1) competitive types who want to win( by win I meen really win) 2) guys who come just to play and have fun (ME) 3) guys who come to socialise. So any unlike previous years instead of moving up the tables I moved down and unlike previous years i was left feeling happy and content and not stressed. while some people may not agree with intentionally losing the way I see it is i got what i wanted out of the game which was to get my wolves into melee. The opponent got some points. with only 2 scoring units in my army I did not want them just sitting on objectives. Especially since that was all the models i had. Better they attack stuff. I will continue Sundays bit when I get to work tonight, Oh yeah finally some Guy had a FW pre heresy army (death gaurd) but counts as SW and the other pic shows some GK which caught my eye due to the weathering he had. Unfortunatly i did not take more pics as i forgot my camera on Sunday. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g320/vittorio_13/IMG00299-20111015-1205.jpg http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g320/vittorio_13/IMG00301-20111015-1207.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240433-beef-goes-to-a-weekender-1750pt-tournament/#findComment-2901980 Share on other sites
MonSTeR
I love your appropriately comedic fenrisian answers... SW don't blah blah blah they kill stuff... I agree about your viewpoint though, have fun :) The best game I ever played ended up with my entire army being slaughtered, apart from Ragnar, who was busily slicing his way ingel handedly through the rest of the Eldar Army. The chap I was playing against and I often wondered whether if time (and turn limit) had allowed, would that have been Ragnar's last stand, or his ultimate pre-breakfast workout... Quillen
I did the competative thing. Still would if I could. But I know what you mean. The thing is, if your a good guy and try and be cool with self centered jerks you will usually win. Every tourny I played had the sportsman part of it included to stop douches from getting anywhere. And it almost always works. That said... When I was living in Canada I had a game against a guy, and he was one of those rules lawyer types. I was not paying attention to points but to games and just having fun, yet still tring to win. It's hard for me to throw a game. I am competitive in that regards. So this guy was wondering why I set up so close to him as he went first. I replied, "Space Wolves are not :cuss." He laughed and the game started, and as soon as I started getting the upper hand in turn 2 and bitching and moaning started. Everythign I did I had to back up with the rule book. Everything. Still I was as nice as I coulod be letting him shoot a squad he forgot to shoot. And then my friends came up and said, Hey this is the table. Your the highest points in the tourny. And it was all on this game. Well the game ended in a draw. I gave this lound complainer a 3 out of 5 on Sportmanship. And he found out before he gave me my sportsman ship points and gave me a 1 to get the win. He won the tourny by 1 point in sportsman ship. I was 4 or more in it, but this guy was 2-3. I think one guy gave him a 1 even. Sometimes wish I had given him what he deserved instead of tring to be decent to him. lionofjudah
man...I feel ya...I quit playing in tourneys as I got tired of the douchery occuring...that and I honestly get bored and my feet n back start to ache, that and its usually a nice day or maybe I might be able to go out with my lady friend or spend time with my boy...or my armies not 100% painted (im anal that way)... congrats on killyness...my fav games are to the bones brass tack slugfests where the rules loosen slightly (to do away with the lawyers and doctors-the downfall of continuity) and stories are made of heroic deeds... Congrats to you on playing a tourney and having fun man! Im gonna play my 1st game in months next month and I have to gird myself for it...im a painter not a gamer in the hobby world of our 40000th universe;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240433-beef-goes-to-a-weekender-1750pt-tournament/#findComment-2902197 Share on other sites

Beef
Thanks Guys, I had a great time, although yes my feet and lower back were killing me. Ok so Sunday being on the bottom table i played against this kid who his last 3 opponents on saturday had all marked him down for being argumentative. However in between breaks on Sat i had talked to this kid and he was a just young and had a aggression problem. So when i was lined up to play him as my first game on Sunday I was quite happy at the prospect as we both wanted to play each other anyway. He had Ultramarines with dev, tacticals etc. His HQ was a chapter master in Termie armour with standard termies. 2 objectives. Players place 1 each where vere they want. so usually the players put the objective in their own deployments zone. so he put his in his own deployment zone. I put mine as close to his as i was allowed (24") this would save him trying to come for mine and all his stuff would be nnice and close for me to get into combat with. So Grimnar goes striaght for his chapter master and its termie vs termie slugfest. No suprise Grimnar and his boys oblitertaed the Ultra termies and then proceeded to slaughter his tacticals. However his devs were on the other end of his deployment zone away from the objectives. i had a nearly full strenth Grimnar and his squad and Arjac and his guys roll back into their Rhinos and decide to slaughter the devs. Along the way ramming into his Rhino's just because i have never tried ramming before. The kid says why you going that way, you squads can kill my half strenth tactial squad and you get both objectives. I say Nah i want that Dev squad that killed both my dreds. 2 wrecked Rhinos and 1 slaughtered DEV squad later my guys are on the other side of the board and his lone surving tactial squad is sitting on the objective winning him the game outright. Ultras 20, Beef 0 4th game Beef Vs Dark Eldar Ok this game worried me as i dont now Xenos races that well and usually get conned badly. on a side note i was suprised not to see any Nids or Necrons. Lots of GK, IG, BA armies. Anyway so i played this really nice old chap. what scared me was the sheer amout of fire power DE can bring on and stupid dark lances made my Landraiders AV12 when they shot at them. Suffice to say my guys got slaugtered. not in combat though just by sheer weight of shooting. Anyway all i had left was my 2 landraiders adn proceeded to wittle his whole army down, if given long enough he would have ghad nothing. now the guy forgot what turn it was (something like 5 or 6) and was looking panicked. From wiping all my stuff out but having most of his stuff still alive he was seeing his guys dying left right and centre by 2 landraiders. So he asked what turn it was thinking the game should have ended by turn 6 or 7 so i said look mate we are probably on turn 9 by now. you clearly won this game if we had stopped it in time but seeing as we did not your army is now decimated. So tecnically you win, he was like are you sure? I was hell yet take 20 points. he breathed a sigh of relief. I though great I am on 10 points only the only person lower was a lady playing tau on 8 points. In fairness to her she diod not even relise half the things her tau were capable off. Just my kind off player. We would have no rules ideas and just wing it. Talking to her she also expected me and her to end up playing against each other. unfortunatly the judges must have wised up and for my last game put me against a guy with 47 pts. he was looking at my score card saying the judges have made a mistake putting a 10 pt guy against me. I reassured him not to panic the judges had done it on purpose. They had had enough of my shinnanigans. Anyway luckily for me the guy was a SW player so i know what he took Roughly 1 TW lord with sheild and claw, attched with 2 fenrision wolves and a TWC with claw. Rune priest with Jaws, 3x 8 GH with melta gun Rhino 3x5 Long fangs with missiles (in a bunker raised so they could see everything) Dred with TLAC (in the bunker with the Long fangs) scouts with WG powerfist combi melta and scout with melta also a GH squad with 2 WG in TDA which he walked on in reserve This game was about table querters 1 objective in each, I just wanted his wolf Lord, how dare he try to leave the Fang without Grimnars approval. Long story short grimnar beat his Lord causing him to run away, Can you imagine the shame. After seeing this the rest of his army just died in droves. My Melta dred survived 4 rounds of combat against a GH squad and the scouts with the powerfist WG, he lost his powerfist early so my dred was just hitting at STR6 but still survived. eventually i massacered everything of his apartf from the GH squad that he bought in on reserves to anothrer table queter to claim the objective, they were to far away to get to so late in the game. his rune priest did nothing at all, all 3 GH squads were wiped out, the missiles did nothing to my WGTDA yay (i did not relise TDA was so tough) eventually he wittled my army down and his wolf lord tried to attack again, this time Grimnar just put him down for good. By the 5th turn he had only the GH who arrived in reserve sitting on an objective and 3 squads of LF. I had an imobalised dread and a landraider plus grimnar who by now had walked over to the fortification his LF were cowering in. My 6th turn would see them assualted and slaughtered squad by squad. The guy new what was coming. He asked me to roll to see if we get a 6th turn, I said ok, anything but a 1 and we continue playing. What do i roll Yes a 1. Game over. all Grimnar could do was curse the dice and swear at the long fangs who were breathing a very big sigh of relief. He only managed to get 2 points off me so his total was 12pts and mine was 8 without even trying to claim objectives on my behalf. He certainly got a shock and understood why the judges had me playing him. Nice guy though and I had always wanted to play another SW army at a tourney. Never did before but this time i did. so all in all over the 6 games over the wekend, not one argument, no stress just pure enjoyment on my behalf and the guys who played me left happy as well. That positive experiance has now made me actually want to play 40K again. For years i had not played, just painted and modeled. I did not win the Raffle for the Storm Raven, the nice old guy with the DE i played won that. Maybe i should have offered him some cash for it as i heard him saying he has no use for it. The nice lady with the tau won a T-shirt for coming last, Hell that could have been mine if the last guys SW lord was more up for a fight or if My WG had better opponents than mere GH. Gona try and game wit this exact army some more, now that i know its strenths and weeknesses. Its an all or nothing amy. Glad i did not play GK or BA (with 2 SR) or twin lash chaos armies. (they were all top table obviously) same armies. Beef
Oh yeah I forgot to mention that the kid with so called issues after our game asked If i wanted to see his new copy of apocolipse 2nd edition or whatever its called as i played wolves and had helped him with ideas for his new army (SW with a celtic theme) and it had the wolves contemplator dred in it. I said sure so he went and got it for me to look over. He then left it with me after a chat so i could look it over in peace. Basically the SW entry makes it clear Fluff wise why Bjorn is not in a contemplator. Basically those inturned in contemplators were prone to bloodlust and excessive overkilling. The wolf priests were hesitant to put great warriors in them, Hence Bjorn is in the more easily maintained and safer version. Its said about comtemplators that the SW look at them with an equal mix of awe and supicion. (not in the supersiosios way but more in the way that they are unstable/ like they would at a SW who is showing signs of being wolf bitten) Also they get sagas that give them things like +armour pen roles and armoury stuff like wolf tooth necklaces and talismans. Brother Crazywolf
Sounds like you had a good time and played not as a competitor but as a person who understood the spirit (at least as I see it) of the game, which to have as much fun as possible. I think that you threw some of your opponents with the "I want to loose" strategy. I am not a person for the tourney circuit, but I could see myself doing much the same thing just to throw a wrench in the works. I also want to give you credit for being a positive influence on the kid. Many people will not take the time to see if there is a communication issue or the like. Thank you for doing that. It gives gamers a better name when people like you take the time to talk to someone to see if they can help instead of shaking their head and walking away. Vilicate
I have a question for you: Why did you attend the tournament if you weren't playing to win any games? I can understand going for trying to win painting or sports...but you're not even trying. Was it just to play some games? Why not bang those out at the local game club instead? Valerian
Contemplator?Sounds deep. ^_^ They do get to spend a lot of time in meditation. I have a question for you: Why did you attend the tournament if you weren't playing to win any games? I can understand going for trying to win painting or sports...but you're not even trying. Was it just to play some games? Why not bang those out at the local game club instead? I was wondering the same thing. Surely pick up games at an LGS with the mutual understanding of "the missus gave me a kitchen pass, so I'm here to have fun," would be more appropriate? Beef
I dont have time to play at my local LGS, i dont even have one that local to me anymore. It was an excuse to meet up with faces i have not seen in years and to just play 6 games over a weekend. Also to put into practice the 5th edition rules and have some fun. With work and doing a degree and 3 children i dont have time for pick up games at my local stores, either that or when they are open I am at work. This was a weekend i took off from work specifically to get some games in. I did try to win best painted but obviously my standard was not good enough. Sportmanship i was not to bothered about but out of 58 players the top mark for sportsmanship was 18 of which 2 players got and the next mark was 17 of which 3 players got me being one of them.
