VAGABOND
Well just arrived back from Nottingham a few hours ago after participating in my first ever GT with my favourite army Deathwing. Myself and over 20 other guys from Glasgow travelled down to Warhammer World on Friday. I'm really pleased with how my army played overall and how well I did against certain lists that I thought was too tough for my Terminators. Round 1 Action http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i238/Ryan-Ess/2011-10-15093021.jpg Game 1 - Orks - Huge win Played against the GW Coventry manager Dave Wright fantastic looking Ork Big Mek list with 3 Dredz, Battlewagon, Lootaz and a ton of boyz playing Capture & Control. This game was an absolute blast to start off Throne with a bang, I got very lucky early on and taking off arms on Deff Dredz and taking out his Battlewagon with a lucky side armour shot. By turn 3 there was a huge combat in the middle of board and Dave made a huge mistake that cost him the game by shooting his boyz and not charging. I held the objective with Dave having nothing left in his army to contest. First game and a win.. woo! http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i238/Ryan-Ess/2011-10-15093048.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i238/Ryan-Ess/2011-10-15100926.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i238/Ryan-Ess/2011-10-15093100.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i238/Ryan-Ess/2011-10-15095624.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i238/Ryan-Ess/2011-10-15102728.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i238/Ryan-Ess/2011-10-15103627.jpg Game 2 - Space Marines - Huge win Kill point game against Steve Barclay's Marine army which was up for best painted. Steve was a really nice guy with a great looking Vanilla Marine army. The only thing he had left was an immobilised Land Raider with a full Command Squad trapped inside as I covered all the access points. Steve conceded turn 4. http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i238/Ryan-Ess/2011-10-15134324.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i238/Ryan-Ess/2011-10-15130715.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i238/Ryan-Ess/2011-10-15130707.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i238/Ryan-Ess/2011-10-15134316.jpg As Arnie would say in Predator... KNOCK KNOCK! :whistling: http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i238/Ryan-Ess/2011-10-15135945.jpg Game 3 - Grey Knights - Huge Win Up next was Ryan Fletcher with his Grey Knight Terminator/ Twin Raven list. Wasn't surprised to run into a Grey Knight army since there was loads and tbh I knew looking at his list that it wouldn't be hard to take down. No harm to the guy he was taking 20 minutes to do a movement and only had like 23 models in his army if even that. Belial and his unit proved they're worth in this game after being shot by Ryan's entire army and then being charged from 2 Grey Knight Terminator Squads and not losing a single member whilst 2 Thundernators and a Librarian killed 1 squad of GK Terminators and Belial and another 3 killed 2 GK Terminators from another squad then proceeded to consolidate and kill the rest. He conceded turn 3. Game 4 - Orks - Loss I played against my toughest match up yet Anthony Chew and did my best to take out his Battlewagons... all 4 of them. The first shot of the game I managed to destroy 1 on a lucky glance and kept taking pop shots at the side armour of them doing nothing 3 turns in a row. He eventually got into combat and slowly whittled down my squads. He won 4 -2 on kill points and deserved to because he was worried he was gonna lose. We had a chat at the end and he said I made a mistake by not DS on turn 2 that would have won me the game by 1. Game 5 - Space Marines - Draw My final game of the day was against Nathan Ardolino's Ultramarines or Captain Idaho on here, who was worried about my army and wasn't sure how to deal with it. I dropped in Belials unit on turn 2 and they scattered and mishapped so I took them off but Nathan insisted I put them on because he was gutted about they were within 1' and I was positive they were just out. He said I put them back on and we swap Best Opponent points which I was happy to do. We fought on to turn 5 were it ended in a draw. Tbh if it had gone on to turn 6 I'd have won it.. damn. I'm delighted I did so well for my first GT and getting 5th place overall and Best Dark Angel Player was the icing on the cake for me. Just wanna thank all the guys I played and thanks for great games. See you next year.. hopefully. Caledonian Deathwatch award winners, me on the far left. http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i238/Ryan-Ess/322681_523357049512_339100430_726499_1258809904_o.jpg Me getting award Best Dark Angel Player http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i238/Ryan-Ess/337374_523356680252_339100430_726477_935559961_o.jpg Woo go me! http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i238/Ryan-Ess/338446_523356740132_339100430_726480_725003413_o.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240446-throne-of-skulls-october/ Share on other sites

Brother Kovash
Congratulations brother, great job representing us. Also, how did you not win best painted army? I call shenanigans on the judges! Bryan Blaire
Vagabond, awesome job! I agree that there may have been some judging shenanigans on the painting, but I always feel like there's some definite bias toward more "bright" armies than the Dark Angels and Unforgiven tend to produce, so I think we'll regularly get overlooked there. Sounds like your army did great and cool on the award! BTW, covering all the access points on the transport is a hysterical way to trap a squad. Honestly, I'd never thought about doing that. Very crafty! :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240446-throne-of-skulls-october/#findComment-2902533 Share on other sites
Captain Semper
Congratulations man! Well deserved judging from the effort in putting your army together! Good show!!! As an aside Dave Write's army is looking spectacular! When I turn to Xenos again (inevitably it will happen) Ork Big Mek list it is! VAGABOND
My army wasn't that greatly painted and it wasn't even finished a I ran outta time before the GT to do the freehand on the kneepads. I reckon for my first time at Throne Of Skulls I did well and proved that Deathwing are still up there with the top tier armies beating the likes of Grey Knights, Dark Eldar and Tyranids. I'm very proud and thank you for all the comments guys :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240446-throne-of-skulls-october/#findComment-2902602 Share on other sites
Gillyfish
Very well done indeed Vagabond. Placing 5th is no mean feat, and I'm impressed that you were able to do so well against the Grey Knights too, given the reputation the army currently has (I haven't played a game in a while, so I've not faced them yet). How much do you think the FAQ has helped in terms of competitiveness? VAGABOND
I think if the player is good enough and know Deathwing as well as I do then they can be competitive in the right hands. As you can see the army I took to Throne Of Skulls had all TH/SS with a CML in each squad and also with FNP in Belial's squad they can be tough to put down by small arms fire and the squad never died once in the entire tournament. All of the Deathwing armies that were present at GT had nothing similar to my army which boosted my chances of becoming Best Dark Angel and getting the position I finished in. If I had won my last game and the game went onto turn 6, I'd have won the tournament but hey that's the luck of the dice and being honest my dicerolls were on top form all weekend except in game 4. Grand Master Raziel Secundus
Excellent result and congrats mate! I am putting the finishing touches to my DW terminator army for the GT this coming weekend (Getting 27 sets of Thunderhammers and stormshields has been a challenge in itself). I have not had any chance to do any practice games so will have to rely alot on luck :) Your results are awesome and have given me some hope and with any luck I can do as good :) My list has 3 x Typhoons with multimeltas (3 seperate squadrons of 1 ea.) 4 x Terminator sqds with TH/SS and CML Beliels Upgraded sqd with standard and apothicary Beliel Librarian Question, how much importance do they put on painting, army lists, details like that? I have prepared a custom army list and a display board as well just in case. VAGABOND
Thanks for all the comments guys, think I did us proud with the final result and most of the guys who I went with. Over 20 guys from Glasgow went down and 9 of us got awards which is great for Team Glasgow ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240446-throne-of-skulls-october/#findComment-2903615 Share on other sites
Captain Idaho
Got to say VAGABOND was a very competetant player. He just couldn't make a mistake I could exploit in our game! Damn, but I was running out of troops to slow him down in the end so was very grateful of the dice gods when he rolled a 2 to see if the game continued at the end of Turn 5 and the draw was a little generous to me. Still killing like 15 Terminators felt good return for most of my army at the time though looking back it looks very poor! :P Thoroughly deserved top DA player mate. Like we said when we were on the top tables; having a dated Codex amongst those nasty BA, SW or Eldar lists was impressive. You were flying the flag for all the rest of us. Hopefully will see you guys at a future ToS though must confess I won't be able to go for a while, but there is always 2013! Cheers for the learning experience and I know I was lucky to hold on for the draw! Dude you did great to place well with your Marines, I had a feeling me and you would play after us both losing our 4th games. Killing 15 Terminators was a huge achievement and you should be proud to have done well and draw with me. I'm still in shock that I placed so high and yet alot of the Glasgow players didn't think I'd manage it but I proved them wrong and winning best Dark Angel was something I had my heart set because I knew I could do well and go far. The funny thing is, If I won that game against you I'd have won the tournament! :) Thanks again for a fantastic last game and the vote, much appreciated. Johnnyb79 - The top armies there was Dark Eldar, Grey Knights and Imperial Guard. My mate finished 4th with his Iyanden and I finished 5th with Deathwing. Here's hoping I can make next year! :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240446-throne-of-skulls-october/#findComment-2903967 Share on other sites

On the flip side, if you were an incompetent player I would have won our game! :P I was so close to winning top Space Marine myself so I know your pain dude! That Ork game was what ruined it for me! I should have won it but the guy had horrific luck and blew up everything I needed to beat him (my transports and firepower units) first turn shooting! He didn't even roll that many attacks, just took me apart from range with precision fire! And your game was a little unlucky if I recall against the Ork guy the same round. We were robbed by Orky pyschic energy influencing our dice rolls mate! HsojVvad
Congradulations on the well placement in the tourney. I do have a question. What is this Best Dark Angels army? Were there alot of DA players? Is there an award for BA and SW and other armies like best Tyranids as well? I never herd of the Best Dark Angle award before. Congradualations again and it looked like you have a blast of a time. VAGABOND
Well from what I counted there was 4 Dark Angels armies. The first one was a basic Dark Angel army that finished on the bottom tables and the other was a 2 Land Raider Deathwing list and another standard Deathwing list. And of course mine. Yeah dude there are awards for every race and whoever was best player in that race got an award.
