Armor Athlete
I am trying to use mag'd packs and arms. Can I fill the torso with iron fillings and then mag the ends of the arms and packs? Grotsmasha
Firstly, I haven't tried that method, but from my experience I would say that the magnetic attraction would not be strong enough. ShinyRhino
Not only would it not be of questionable magnetic strength, but the attachment point would be unfocused. There'd be nothing to prevent the arm from slipping down to the Marine's bellybutton or his hip, since the entire torso area would be filled with magnetic material. Arm magnetization is typically done with magnets in the shoulder joint of the torso, and additional magnets in the shoulder joint of the arm. Anything less is unreliable. puck
Iron fillings won't be able to maintain the kind of attraction you're looking for. The "sciencey" answer would be that the magnetic attraction between a magnet and a chunk of metel depends on the magnetic field inducing an electric current in the bulk material which creates a reciporocal magnetic field in the opposite direction. But the short answer is no it won't hold. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240484-iron-fillings/#findComment-2903031 Share on other sites
rusty1109
Not to mention corrosion issues....... Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240484-iron-fillings/#findComment-2903042 Share on other sites
Armor Athlete
Thanks. I have not tried to mag'd anything so i was seeing any possibilities out there. darth_giles
I think the standard technique is to use a 1/8" bit in your pin vise, drill the two parts that're going to be mated, and then glue magnets into the holes. AyanamiKun
I use 3mm rare earth magnets. One in the shoulder, one in the arm. It fits well but it is a bit tricky to get it 100% right for weapons which are held in both hands :D But it's not too hard either. Just make sure that you do not mess up your magnet orientation! There is nothing more annoying than having marines which cannot take all equipment I have because the magnets are not correct ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240484-iron-fillings/#findComment-2903539 Share on other sites
Spacefrisian
Not to mention corrosion issues....... If its air tight than corrosion wont be a problem. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240484-iron-fillings/#findComment-2903587 Share on other sites
rusty1109
Chances of that happening? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240484-iron-fillings/#findComment-2903604 Share on other sites
