Astral Claws

Incredible stuff! I have just started to dabble in the weathing powders, I was wondering what references, tutorials or links do you have so I can weather like you?

Or even if you can make a tutorial youself?

I used various techniques with the weathering powders some are from IA modelling masterclass book others are picked up from various military modelling magazines as I find these invaluable for techniques and inspiration with weathering. I used a mix of MIG and Forge World powders both work fine and it was purely down to colour choice which I was using. The way I did the lower surfaces of the armour was to airbrush tamiya acrylic thinner on to the area I wanted covered, you can use any thinner here including water. I then lightly sprinkled on the powders using a drybrush loaded with powder and tapping with a finger above the area to be covered, I worked on one side at a time for this. You can mix your colours here but I started with a light earth powder for this and then added the darker red coloured powders at a later stage. Then again with the airbrush I lightly sprayed thinner over the powders to blend them into the surface and left them to dry. You can then go back with a dry brush and rub off the powders from areas where it's too heavy or you want to show wear/rubbing, etc. The dark powders were applied in a similar fashion onto a thinner dampened surface but I used a flicking motion with a brush to get the splatter effects and these were gently blended with airbrushed thinner too but with lower pressure. The top surfaces had the powders applied with a small drybrush and moved to where I wanted them and then fixed in place by using a large brush soaked in thinners or MIG pigment fixer and let it flow into the powders by lightly touching the brush onto the surface with as little movement as possible so as not to smudge them. Hope this helps :D

wow that's an awesom weathering on that dozer blade!!

the only bad side of your army it's that they will eventualy turn to chaos :o

Great work!

Thanks. It's not my fault if the Imperium can't see the error of their ways :)

I hope to update this thread with a lot more pictures soon as the tac squad is complete along with the weathering to the rhinos and predator...

I've been a bit slow updating here due to getting sidetracked with non PA projects but here you go with lots of pics to update the WIP. I've not fully completed the weathering to the Pred and Rhinobacks as I need to add some dust effects to the top surfaces and tweak the details but they are close.

First up is my Tac squad I decided to go with the easy option of silver aquillas on the chest plate plus I'm thinking of switching the termies to gold aquillas, not strictly correct by IA9 but it's my interpretation

I'm now working on an assault squad and will likely start on either some HQ elements or some drop pods next.

I love the overall scheme of the army, but it bothers me that there is only heavy weathering on just the blue. If you're going to do weathering, I would do it on all of it or none of it. It just looks a little goofy to me.

Other than that, its looking good so far.

There is a little method in the madness with the heavy weathering to the blue areas as I regard the silver sections to be the natural unpainted colour of the armour. It is a little heavier than I was aiming for but it was my first attempt at using the hairspray weathering technique and I think I got a little bit carried away :cuss

I can always use the excuse of the Badab War being a long conflict with little time to maintain vehicles between the action :o

Don't ever think your weathering effect is 'too much'. Is it very strong? Yes, but with the basing you've done for the army it fits perfectly with the 'theme'. You've made it look like they are in an extremely corrosive environment, and that would play havoc on vehicles.

Stellar work. You planted a seed in my brain. Now I've got some serious consideration on how 'worn' I want the armour in my army to look.

As always mate. Very cool army! What other models will be painted in the near future?

I've got a 5 man assault squad part built, probably going to put these in a razorback, I have the Tyrant himself of course - in fact here is my earlier version of him which has now been sold so I can paint a new version to match the rest of the army:

I have Valthex too and plenty of bits to build more PA squads. Also in the pipeline are 2 drop pods, a MK1C Rhino, Landspeeders, I'm wondering if I shouldn't pick up another Vindi too as they always seem to work best in pairs, so plenty planned. I like the chapter colours for the Astral Claws I am enjoying painting them plus the fluff sits fine with me too so I'm hoping this will turn into a long term army build. I f I get worn down by painting the same chapter I'll pick up something else until the mojo comes back :)

I should have an update with pics this weekend all being well. I've got a second 10 man tac squad, a 5 man assault squad, a Forge World Mk IV dreadnaught, plus Valthex built up and basecoated. With early stages of detail painting started on some of the figures.

Im looking forward to see that update !

I had a second look on your marines today, and have some alittle point of critc. Three of the tac marines have no blue on them. I think that makes them look an edge to different.

I wanted to show the Astral Claws in transition to the Tyrants Legion in the early part of the Badab Wars as IA9 shows quite a lot of variations of markings and insignia. I didn't want to go with pure Tyrants Legion or pure Astral Claws. I'm still trying to figure a way of including some Tiger Claws into the army...

Some WIP pictures of the next batch of Astral Claws, Tac squad 2, Assault squad, Valthex, and a MKIV dreadnaught with DCCW and MM arms.

Super duper awersome, the vehicles especially look airbrushed, is this so?

how did you do the heat stains on weapon barrels (lascannons)?

Thank you :)

Yes, all the base coating is done with an airbrush, vehicles and minis, as it speeds things up no end overall gunmetal followed by a steel zenithal highlight from the front/top. the heat stains on the lascannons was done by airbrushing the ends of the barrels with a dark yellow - I used vallejo ochre followed by airbrushed GW baal red wash, then nearer the end I used leviathan purple wash. It took a few coats of each working towards the barrel end with each coat. Due to the coats being so thin the washes dry much quicker than when painted on but I'm pretty sure it would be possible to do the same thing by brush painting and blending I just found it quicker and easier to use the airbrush.

Awesome Astral Claws! You could think they've come straight out of the campaign book. Great contrast between the silver armour and the muddy earth effect.

Thank you :) my aim was to give these guys a battle worn look as it feels correct plus a super clean 'parade ground' look doesn't suit my painting style - I'm too sloppy ;)

more????

There will be an update of the new batch as soon as I can get some better pics done...

Love the weathering on these tanks, it's quite beautiful! :cuss :tu: B)

Thank you :tu:

The next support vehicles will be a Forge World MK IC Rhino and a drop pod, or maybe two. I will probably add a second Vindicator after that as they work better in pairs.

Here is an update of the WIP for Valthax I still need to touch up highlights on the armour, add small details such as buttons, lenses, and complete the basing, but he's getting close...

This final picture when viewed at 1680 x 1050 is the actual size of the mini just to give a better idea than the bigger images of the true figure

The rest of the current batch of WIP's - MKIV Dred, Assualt Squad, and Tac Squad - are ready for decals, so main painting done, Klear coat done, but not yet shaded like Valthex who has no decals.
