starting a crusade era army...

Hey guys. I'm planning on starting a crusade/pre-heresy era army. I'm going to use the great MK II and MK III models from ForgeWorld for my force. I have planned on using the Space Wolves codex as my choice to represent the army. So, what units are ok for a crusade/pre-heresy era army? For example, they used rhinos, but did they use razorbacks? Are melta weapons ok? Did termies use assault cannons or auto cannons like Chaos termies. In other words, I NEED HELP!

Thanks in advance for the help.

While I thought I read somewhere that Khan rode on the back of a razorback during Terra's siege, I have looked up razorbacks to find their discovery during M36. Razorbacks are a no no in this case.

Limited use of Melta Weapons would be alright, as they seem widely received current time.

I'm not for sure on the terminators, but I would consider viewing the chaos marines as a loose outline. For example, current space marines use storm bolters while chaos still uses the twin bolter design to to the same effect. That should help be a loose guideline.

Wich Legion are planning on building?

The Assault canon was just coming into use at the end of the Great Crusade. The Sehkmet (TS terminators) in 'A thousand sons' use one.

Predator Annihilators are post Heresy.

LRC and LRR should be considered post Heresy as well.

Don't use Thunder Wolf Cavalry. I'm not sure if they are considered post heresy or not though.

if you want a rules accurate army list, use the chaos codex.

dont take chaos god marks, daemons of any kind, or defilers.

but the 10-20 strong squads, autocannons in termie squads, bikes, jump packs, chosen and tough chaos lords all work in yor flavor. also, importantly, no ATSKNF. that benefit of fanaticism hasnt been introduced yet.
