Terminator Helmets

I've just started painting some assault terms to go with the Redeemer I've already finished. My question is what colour I should paint their helmets?

According to the codex, all veterans have golden helmets, which in the artwork they've done on the vanguards and sternguards. However, all the terminators in the dex have red helmets. Why?

Also, is there a reason they've painted their Lightning Claw hands black?

Thanks in advance.

The gold helms is for commanders to easily distinguish what forces he has available at a glance, and has been so since the times of Sanguinius.

Terminators are pretty obvious and since you have to be a veteran or 1st company member to don a suid of TDA you really don't require gold helms.

Its most likely a case of precedent: Blood Angel Terminators have always had red helmets, all the way back to the cover of Space Hulk 1st edition, Sternguard and Vanguard were technically a new thing for BA, so had a semi-clean slate to start with.

The black hand thing is something they've resurrected from 2nd edition: all terminators left gauntlets were black irrespective of armament (hence why the Lightning Claw marines only have the left hand black) - no fluff reason was ever given I believe.

Red helmtets for tactical terminators, yellow helmets for assault terminators.

The powerfists are dark grey.

vanguard and sternguard are painted with gold helmets, as to tie them in with the older veteran assault squads.

These are my chosen colours. as for sternguard. I'm actually going to paint them up as deathwatch. Still not sold on the loss of veteran assault squads.

Colored (especially golden) helmets for terminators seems too much to me. It's like conveying the same message twice. Of course after the Space Hulk there is no such thing as too much bling for BA termies, but gold helmets do seem a bit OTT visually. I do like the black left hands though. A lot!

Personally I'm in the red for Tactical* Terminators & Sternguard/yellow for Assault Terminators & Vanguard camp.

* In RT the shooty Terminator squad was actually called a Tactical Terminator squad in the army list, which is probably why when BA first switched to denoting squad type by helmet colour halfway through RT Terminators stayed red-helmeted.

I think the golden helmet for the Terminators doesn't really fit, because it is quite obvious they're veterans and (this is personal) I just don't like their helmets when painted gold. I am a real fan of the black (or grey) hands though. My tactical/assault/devestator marines all have black rims on their shoulderpads as well.

I think that the black hand looks so much better. It gives the model more definition.

Another thing that you will notice is that in the last codex for Blood Angels is that gold is for veterans, yes. Just that it is for veterans of an honour guard. So even veterans of a first company do not have gold helmets.

The Sternguard and Vanguard pictured in the current codex both have gold helmets. The Honour Guard have completely gold armor, like the Sanguinary Guad and Dante.

And the black hand is sweet.
