From left field, I'd recommend Pawns of Chaos. A subtle little number which could almost be fantasy for a very long time, but then the sting in the tail is very 40k and it is a wondrous example of why Tzeentch is very much the puppet master of Chaos. And unlike several books already recommended (and a number that were spurned) in this thread, the end result is not apparent from about Page 3.
