Dragon Freehand

Asrech

Recommended Posts

Wanted to get some more Salamander-style freehands in the army, been painting nothing but skulls recently.

So sat down and played around with it a little.

Pretty happy with how it turned out in the end, esp since it's a first try at this, and at painting over a broken surface (rather than on a smooth banner/hatch).

I will be re-doing the flames, not happy with the ballance between yellow and red.

Thanks brothers!

That's the thing, other than some flames, I haven't really done much "Sallie" freehanding! But that will change!

And as mentioned the flames on the dragon will be re-done as soon as I have time.

Other freehands;

This is the type of stuff (flames on shoulder) that I'll be doing across the army once it's otherwise fully painted, shoulderpads, kneepads etc

Another night of painting, another dragon on a rhino!

Note that the black scales on the belly are just rough lines to show where the scales will be, so they are not done. Will be done in the same style as the first.

Thoughts?

Thanks brothers!

Obben, you should try it! I find it usefull to google and find a pic that's close to what I want to use as a reference.

For the first time try this: Find one in the right side, put a piece of paper over the screen and trace it (or just print it out), take an exacto blade, cut out the image and put it on the tank, then paint the outline of the wolf. Then use the image as a ref when you're doing the rest.

Some pics of the rhinos next to each other. Here it's more visable that I've been trying a different style.

I might not be doing a baal pred, but a soon-to-come project is a fellsword(shadowsword). And that thing will be crazy converted, and will most likely have some freehanding done as well!

Cheers!

They both look good, but they both look unfinished to me, with the first one the head is spot on but the body looks unfinished because compared to the head, the basecolour is too dark, it sort of looks like you started with the shade and went straight to the highlights without painting the basecolour, the way you painted it could work, but then the head should be a lot darker too, same goes for the belly part, I would lighten it up, then again, not sure if you're keeping the tank black, if so I'd lighten it for a bit more contrast, if you're planning on painting the rest of the tank another colour the black might be okay.

the second dragon sort of has the same problem but in reverse, your final highlight is too dominant, and I'd tone it down a bit on the body part.

Good work on both though, but with a bit of extra work they could look great rather then good

Someone should explain the gene-seed malfunction that makes some chapters (my own, for example) much worse at art than their brethren.

Very nice freehand art in all cases, I really like that purple flaming banner job, I'd turn and run if I saw that guy carrying that thing.
